The Little Red Hen finds a grain of wheat and asks the dog, cat, and owl to help plant, harvest, and take it to the mill to make bread. They all refuse, saying "Not I". The Little Red Hen does all the work herself. When the bread is finally ready, she does not share it with the others who did not help, and eats it herself.
2. One
day,
there
was
a
li4le
red
hen.
She
had
just
found
a
grain
of
wheat.
“Who
should
help
me
plant
this
wheat?”
she
mused.
“We
certainly
won’t,”
chorused
the
dog,
the
cat,
and
owl.
“ Then
I
will,”
u4ered
the
li4le
red
hen.
Well
aEer
a
while,
the
wheat
began
to
to
grow.
It
grew
and
grew
and
soon
it
was
ready
to
be
cut.
3. “Who
will
help
me
cut
this
wheat?”
quesHoned
the
li4le
red
hen.
“Not
I,”
broke
in
the
dog.
“Not
I,”
grumbled
the
cat.
“Not
I,”
sassed
the
owl.
“ Then
I
will,”
answered
the
cheerful
li4le
red
hen.
AEer
the
grueling
work
of
cuKng
the
wheat,
it
was
ready
to
be
brought
to
the
mill.
“Who
will
help
me
bring
the
wheat
to
the
mill?”
proposed
the
li4le
red
hen.
“Not
I,”
retorted
the
dog
“Not
I,”
shot
the
cat.
“Not
I,”
smirked
the
owl.
“I
am
beginning
to
think
this
was
a
bad
idea,
I
will
do
it.
The
wheat
was
crushed
into
flour.
4. There
was
just
enough
to
make
a
loaf
of
bread.
“Who
will
help
me
bake
this
bread?”
asked
the
li4le
red
hen.
“Not
I,”
fumed
the
dog.
“Not
I,”
seethed
the
cat.
“Not
I,”
raged
the
normally
calm
owl.
The
bread
baked
and
baked
and
picked
up
a
great
aroma.
All
the
animals
came
in
to
smell
it.
The
bread
was
finally
ready
to
be
eaten.
“I
can
guess
that
aEer
all
the
Hmes
you
guys
have
said,
‘Not
I’
that
you
won’t
want
to
eat
this
bread,”
chuckled
the
li4le
red
hen.
She
quickly
gobbled
it
up.
