18. The world is a great mirror
I have a definition of success. For me, it's very simple. It's not about
wealth and fame and power. It's about how many shining eyes I have
around me. Benjamin Zander
We all know that the future of Europe depends upon young people. Let me introduce our passionate first grader Kate. She is looking forward to school ... Of course under the condition she has no older siblings...
How is it possible that in a few months, it is a bit different? Do you know this? We face these problems in our schools. Why is it like this? Why pupils are not interested in school, in learning?
What can we do to prepare them for their future? This generation will live in an era of globalization that demands mobility and soft skills. Our current education system needs to adapt to such challenges.
We all know that world has change a lot and there are different requirements for our pupils to be successful. now it is time to work a bit.
What competencies, skills, and knowledge will our pupils need for their future life?
All these competencies can be acquired at school. Tools, such as entrepreneurship education, show good results because they focus on soft and core skills, including problem-solving, team-working, initiative-taking, creativity and innovation... Are we as teachers prepared to offer such education? The European Commission says that 90% of teachers want more training in entrepreneurial learning tools and methods.
So let´s enter Business Incubator and discover the ways how to develop enterprise capabilities of our pupils and ours as well
But....Business incubators do not serve all. Entrepreneurs who wish to enter a business incubation program must apply for admission. What are acceptance criteria? Simple... Just take this quiz....
Teachers, especially eTwinning teachers have the potential to be entrepreneurs because they impact the lives of many people. Teacherpreneurs, like entrepreneurs, create and share, solve real problems, they are active, energetic, take initiative and inspire others to do the same, they wish to effect real change in education and are passionate about what they do. Are we teacherpreneurs? I believe yes !
We are ready now to enter Business incubator. What will we explore there?
Is Entrepreneurship education only for teaching in business schools, where we teach how to develop market research, write business plan and present it, teach management, finance, accounting..........Entrepreneurship is not an academic discipline; it is a mindset. It is about positive attitude and equipping people with the confidence to develop a career and vocational interests, it is about initiative and making things happen. Thinking like an entrepreneur requires a unique approach to the world and a mindset to help view the world as limitless in its possibilities for improvement, change and innovation.
I have collected the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs, so let´s have a look and explore them. I bet you will find that you are quite similar
It is important nowadays to have ability to work in team. We will form the teams of 4 people. Now I will give you this strange strings with rubber band in the middle and some cubes. I will show you now what to do. Your task is to build a tower from all cubes only with the help of this strings. You are not allowed to touch a cube with your hands, just hold the string at the end and pull it so that you can hold the cube with the rubber band.
What have we seen? What is team work about? You were all dependant on each other, if you wanted to succeed, every member of a team had to work and be responsible. Moreover, together you had to decide how to go on to built the tower. This is collaboration !
Let´s work in teams....
The entrepreneurial mindset causes kids to depend on themselves for their own success. How to teach children to be independent? 2 min to talk and post your ideas as a team
What can we do in eTwinning project to get children passionate? 2min
In school we were all taught that failure is bad. Let children learn that they can recover from a mistake, it is the source of real self-confidence. Give one example of failure that was “learning lesson” and brought benefit later 3 min
Let´s try reverse brainstorming. How can we kill curiosity in our pupils?
Developing entrepreneurial skills requires a school environment that encourages invention and creativity, allows taking risk and making mistakes, which should be valued as a learning opportunity.
The Virtual Guide to Entrepreneurial Learning is part of The Entrepreneurial School. It aims at supporting teachers professional development in applying the entrepreneurial learning in several subjects and learning environments (primary, secondary, upper secondary and vocational schools).
I would like to show you one simple tool Skills and Strengths quiz. A self-assessment tool in quiz format for children to identify their own strengths and 'lifelong learning' skills. The quiz can be used at the beginning of a project to give children a starting point when identifying and designating roles and responsibilities, and also as a baseline for target-setting and self-assessment as the project progresses.
Another tool that I find great for all of you is Creative Cards
We would love to ensure our children a better world, brighter future. Is it possible? It is not always in our hands of course. So what can we do? We have to use our school programs, our teaching strategies, methods of classroom organization and tools for teaching, to build resilient and entrepreneurial mind-set of our children.
We are all members of a great eTwinning community of teachers and we know, that eTwinning offers possibilities for teachers and pupils to create meaningful projects and apply Project Based Learning. Let ś explore what should we do to promote enterprise education in etwinning project
There are 3 levels of leadership:1. Self leadership – is taught at school, teacher is always asking – does anybody have the different opinion? ….. a good teacher supports thinking of the students, this is the way how to support independence 2. Being active – give your children the opportunity to lead their friends in different activities such as: outdoor sports, music practice, give them experience in public speaking3. Building coalitions – short and specific, raising money for charity, propose a small business project for your children that could be done at your school, Inspire your pupils to think about "What can we do to help for instance environment, elderly people in neighbourhood
How can we teach them to set a small business project ? 5 (80)
Here are just few simple steps.
It is useful if you praise children for pointing out small problems or setbacks in their lives that cause them distress. Inspire them to pay attention to the problems and complaints of their parents, friends or other people. Brainstorm solutions on how to resolve their troubles. If they focus on positive solutions, instead of focusing on problem itself, it will help them to create profitable ideas in their possible future business, or at least have positive mindset. Motivate children to imagine real customers with real problems. Let them think of tangible benefits which a product or service can bring customers. Are there already competitive ideas ? Never mind. Entrepreneurs believe almost everything can be improved…" Important question is, what I can do to make my product unique?
Financial literacy is a must. It is useful to teach children about money at an early age. Teach them about how much it would cost to produce their product, point out that they should pay themselves for their work as well. Give your pupils the opportunity to earn their own money through their own small business.
Selling is involved in every part of life. Life is all about selling. To get a good job, you must sell yourself to your employers. Success in business is also all about selling; Encourage your children to start with small projects like selling their old toys, starting a lemonade stand, or selling handmade goods. Encourage them to create their own marketing materials for their business ideas.
Suggest and activity that can be used in an etwinning project and will develop entrepreneurial skills or knowlede. Please, set your roles in a team.... It is good to teach pupils to do the same. The roles can be for instance coordinator, presenter, time keeper, thinker, reviewer. Then share your idea with us on Padlet and introduce it to us. You will prepare elevator pitch.
An elevator pitch is a brief speech that you use to create interest in a project, idea, or product – or in yourself. A good elevator pitch should last no longer than short elevators ride of 30 seconds, hence the name.
Make agreement who is going to do it as a presenter of a team. Of course, you should decide together, what to tell.
It reflects back to us what we are. Let´s spread joy at our schools and students will give it back to us.
I was really impressed by the idea of Conductor Benjamin Zander. He said: I have a definition of success. For me, it's very simple. It's not about wealth and fame and power. It's about how many shining eyes I have around me. So dear teacherprneurs, let´s shine as many eyes of our students as possible..... Let´s offer them learning acitivities that matter and encourage their passion for learning.
