  2. 2. COMPARATIVE • Short Adj: S + V + (adj/adv) + “er” + than+ Noun/ Pronoun Eg: My ruler is longer than yours. Today is hotter than yesterday. • Long Adj: S + V + more + Adj/Adv + than + Noun/ Pronoun Eg: He speaks English more fluently than his friend. This hat is more expensive than the others. We use comparative form when talking about two things (not three or more things).

RULE Short adjectives: add -er old → older young → younger • Variation: if the adjective ends in -e, just add –r late → later • Variation: if the adjective ends in consonant, vowel, consonant, double the last consonant big → bigger • Variation: if the adjective ends in -y, change the y to I happy → happier

RULE Long adjectives: use more modern → more modern expensive → more expensive Exception: • With some 2-syllable adjectives, we can use "-er" OR "more": quiet → quieter/more quiet clever → cleverer/more clever • The following adjectives have irregular forms: good → better well (healthy) → better
