Appraise the Merits of Using the Qualitative Method
BUS-7380 Assignment # 2
For the assignment this week, you were to write conclusive
reasoning why you believe that qualitative research with the use
of mixed-method design may be able to answer your type of
research questions. Even though the readings and activities were
called introspective by the author of the assignment, you were
told to use scholarly knowledge to back your thoughts or ideas.
The author of this assignment was extremely explanatory as to
what he wanted to see in this paper. This week, instead of
giving a script, the author of the assignment gave an outline to
follow.
Within a 3- to 5-page paper, using 5 or more scholarly sources,
you were to follow an outline that started with an overview of
qualitative design, determine a way to employ mixed methods
approach in your design, connect it with your degree field,
explain how mixed-method design would affect your research,
then construct a framework for your research problem. The
author wanted you to focus on the framework of your possible
qualitative research within this paper. Each one of these
sections of the outline could have been larger than the one to
two paragraphs that were asked for. Therefore, much of this
needed to be very succinct, clear, and concise writing that
followed the reading material found in this week's required
readings. To be able to keep this under 5 pages while making
sure that your theoretical or conceptual framework for your
topic’s research problem was the main idea of this paper, it
seems as if your idea for your proposed research should have
been the main idea throughout the entire paper.
The feedback process consisted of a four-part summary (four-
parts listed below), a few short, location-specific balloon-
comments found within the margins of the text, and the
highlighting of grammar, punctuation, or APA styling errors
found within the text. Make sure that you view your document
with the track changes (review toolbar) set to ALL MARKUP to
be able to see all the comments.
The summary is split into four parts. These four parts consist
of grammar/punctuation, conformity with APA style citations,
conformity with APA style references, and content. The order of
the parts listed does not intend to emphasize the importance of
the parts as the content is always the most important part of the
assignment. Therefore, it is listed at the end because normal
memory concentrates on what was heard / read last.
What was found:
Grammar/ Punctuation
There was mostly a lack of punctuation problems throughout
your writing. Most of the problems dealt with comma usage,
which led to some issues with run-on sentences. Do not forget
to use the free Grammarly program that NCU provides to the
students through NCU's Academic Success Center. There was a
link to the direct source in the feedback for assignment 1. This
software program will help determine if you do need a comma
placed within your sentence. It can help you to learn where to
place the commas as you write. Many of your problems were
with missing commas after introductory clauses, between
independent clauses, in compound sentences, conjunctions, and
before the word"which". Missing commas in compound
sentences led to run-on sentences. Make sure you proofread or
enlist another to help proofread your work prior to submitting
it. There are also some places that are missing an article prior to
a noun. The placement of this article is needed for a proper
sentence. Each time that a grammatical or punctuation error
within your work, I have highlighted it.
APA style citations
There were citations that were not in APA format within your
work. There are also areas where citations were needed but were
missing. When you use the ideas or work of others, you must
use a citation. This seems most evident whenever you had an
explanation of a definition, such as the mixed-method approach
and qualitative or quantitative methodology. The citations that
had APA errors are highlighted, and the places that needed a
citation are marked using the marginal comments.
APA style references
It seems like all of your references are missing the digital
object identifier if it was a scholarly journal article or where it
was published if it was a book. Make sure that you put "the
where" when you reference your source. This seems to be the
only thing missing from your sources.
Content
Although all the questions were notated, they were not answered
with enough detail to explain the processes. You were to
overview of qualitative design, determine a way to employ
mixed methods approach in your design, connect it with your
degree field, explain how mixed-method design would affect
your research, then construct a framework for your research
problem. You seemed to explain that the concepts are important
in the field of business and in the field of diversity. You did not
give an overview of qualitative design or explain the main
components of qualitative design. What type of research is
qualitative? You mentioned that a mixed-method approach will
also fit with business and the field of diversity but you do not
explain how. You also do not explain how mixed methods could
affect your research. Having good research is not explaining the
effect of it. Another example of the lack of detail in the answer
is within the question of the framework. You did not construct a
theoretical or conceptual framework for your research problem
within this paper. I wonder if you are missing the idea of what
the theoretical or conceptual framework might be. Look at this
source from NCU's library for more information on theoretical
Frameworks:
https://ncu.libanswers.com/faq/220565
This source may help you understand the reasoning and
construction of the framework. You will need this for your
dissertation and any research project as you go forward.
Another helpful resource can also be found using the library
database and can quickly be found using this website:
https://commons.ncu.edu/sites/default/files/file_file/the_theoreti
cal_framework.pdf
If you still have problems with the idea of a conceptual or
theoretical framework you can find more help in a group session
with NCU's Academic Success Center by following this link:
https://ncu.libanswers.com/asc/faq/239140
I have heard that students have received loads of help
determining their own theoretical framework by attending the
group sessions.
I hope that one of these sources can help you realize if you are
using a conceptual or theoretical framework. These are two
different objectives. One of them works better in qualitative
methodology and the other works better in a quantitative
methodology. It does not seem as if you pulled this concept out
of your required reading for this week, but the theoretical or
conceptual framework is a necessity in research methods of any
sort. The theoretical or conceptual framework is also going to
follow you throughout the next 5- weeks of this course. You
will need to understand the concept behind the framework as
you move forward. You will need to know your conceptual or
theoretical framework as you go forward.
Because I was late getting your feedback back to you, I have
graded your submission extremely liberally. Your email will
answer your question about assignment 3. You had a choice
within my reply to your email. This liberal grading had nothing
to do with your choice. This grading of assignment 2 is just
because I lost you and my grading process. I apologize again for
any discomfort that this may have put upon you.
If you have any questions about any part of this, please feel free
to contact me via Skype or NCU email.

Overview of Qualitative Research
Qualitative research is one of the methodologies that can be
used when studying the effects of diversity in the workplace.
The use of qualitative research is important because it is a good
way of managing and simplifying data without ruining the
context and the complexity (Atieno, 2009). The qualitative
methods are critical in areas where the preemptive cutting out
of data will prevent the full discovery of the intended topic. It
is important to use the qualitative approach when looking at
diversity in the workplace because it will help in discovering
more and doing justice to the topic and making more complex
interpretations of the same (Walliman, 2017). The qualitative
method is also important because it generates a new way of
interpreting the data that might already be there. Comment by
Vicki Lindsay, PhD: How? Explain how you can do this by
using qualitative methodology. You are not fully answering the
questions asked of you. It is important to use qualitative
methodology while looking at diversity, but the question asked
how you would do it. How are you going to use the qualitative
methodology to answer your research question? What is
qualitative methodology? What is the overview of qualitative
research? The idea that it is important is true, but how is it
important to research? Read your question and explain the
question that the author asked.
The use of the qualitative research in this case is also important
because it will help to understand the issue of diversity in the
workplace in deep detail. The phenomena of diversity in the
workplace is not widely researched and the use of the
qualitative research will help in understanding the core
concerns of the essence of having a diverse workplace
(Cameron, R., & Molina-Azorin, 2011). The use of qualitative
research requires one to have a clear topic as well as the
necessary concentration to deal with such matters. In research it
is important that the method fits the kind of data which is to be
collected. The qualitative research method is appropriate for the
use in the study on diversity in the workplace. Comment by
Vicki Lindsay, PhD: This word is the plural version of the
phenomenon. Therefore, the plural version of the verb should be
used. If you meant to use the singular version of the word, the
phenomenon, it was mistakenly written as the plural. Make sure
that you proofread your work to keep this from happening.
Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: What kind of data is
collected when using qualitative research? You never explained
this. This is one of the most important concepts when
qualitative research is discussed.
Potential of Using Mixed Method s
Mixed methods have been used in the social science research for
a long time, but it is yet to be fully embraced in business
research. Mixed methods involve combining the elements of
both qualitative and quantitative research (Harrison III, 2013).
The use of mixed methods helps in increasing the depth of
understanding on a topic through the various approaches. I
believe that there is potential of using methods when it comes to
the study of diversity in the workplace. Qualitative data is made
up of words while the quantitative one is made up of numbers. I
believe using the both can be beneficial to the study.
Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Don’t use first- or
second-person voice within academic papers. Be careful of
doing this in the future. Most academics do not allow it, and
APA forbids second person and only allows first person in a few
cases. APA states that the use of it causes a disconnect with the
reader. Authors of research do not want a disconnect with the
reader. If you would like to know more about the use of first- or
second-person voice, please see page 69 of the APA 6th ed
Publication Manual.
Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Citation needed.
Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Explain why.
The qualitative data that is obtained can the coded in a
quantitative manner. The numerical values can be used in
certain ways to further interpret the results of the study. The
values are also better when it comes to examining the
hypotheses that are presented (Harrison III, 2013). The use of
quantitative coding does not mean that the information is less
qualitative but what it does is open up the data to a wide range
of possibilities. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Is to
open the data…
The mixed methods approach can be used to study the diversity
in the workplace. The data obtained qualitatively can be coded
for further interpretation of the results. There is no method that
exists alone in a vacuum and therefore such an approach is
important. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Hypen needed
for mixed-methods
Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: You need to explain how
this can happen. There is no explanation here. Knowing that it
can happen is good, but discussing how it can be done is
necessary for the question to be answered fully. How would
you use the mixed-method approach to find the answer to your
proposed research question?
Degree Path Influence on Research Approach
The degree path that I am taking is of business administration.
Business research has been there for a long time and there are
various studies that have been done on various topics in the
area. It is important, however, to note that business is
continuously changing in response to the environment that it is
in. It is critical to make sure that there is up to date information
in business administration that can help guide the core decision
makers in the industry. There are limited studies that have been
done on the role of diversity in the workplace and whether it is
necessary. The issue of diversity has been for long been a
political issue but it is now important to look at it from a
practical business side. Is there are benefit to the business when
there is diversity? When such a question is properly answered
using data and statistics, the decision makers will make an
informed choice on the way ahead in the days ahead. Business
administrators will be able to make better choices when hiring
and other business decisions. Comment by Vicki Lindsay,
PhD: No need to make this into a prepositional phrase. Remove
“of” Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: I am unclear as to what
this means in this context. What are you trying to say here?
Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: What is “it” in this
sentence? Why is “it” important? This is not clear. You may
want to use the word not the pronoun. Clarity is key when
answering the question in a short, precise answer such as this
one. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: There is no citation or a
source throughout this whole paragraph. How do you know that
any of this is true? Where did the information come from?
World View and Research
The world view that one has will have an effect on the research.
The thoughts on the business will be significant effect on the
outcome of the research. It is the significance of the research on
diversity that is influencing this research. The researcher is
keen to have data and statistics which either support the
diversity in the work place or the lack of it. The workplace
needs to be as diverse as the consumers which it serves, and I
believe this research will act as a guide on this issue. Diversity
needs to go further from being a political issue to one which is
data driven with clear benefits of the same being discovered (De
Aquino & Robertson, 2018). Diversity has been a core issue in
workplaces, and it is important to add onto the body of
literature that seeks to understand the role of diversity in
multicultural settings around the world. The conceptual
framework is aligned to ensure the results reflect the true state
of diversity in the workplace. Comment by Vicki Lindsay,
PhD: What does this mean? This does not make sense as
written. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Citation?
Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Place of work =
workplace = one word. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD:
People = who Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Citation of the
source where you found the information that makes you believe
this? Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: APA does not
condone the use of subjects that are not people using people
verbs. This is called anthropomorphism. Check the APA 6th
edition Publication Manual page 69 for the explanation of
anthropomorphism and the characteristics of them. Literature
cannot seek to understand. People or authors of the literature
can seek the information. It is much more clear when the
authors are named as the actors.
I understand what you are trying to state. However, you cannot
allow inanimate objects to do things that only people can do.
This is an example of anthropomorphism. It is not allowed in
APA. Basically, you are allowing a thing to do the human
action. Make your subject into a human. “The researchers seek
to find…. “

21Appraise the Merits of Usi.docx

  • 1. 2 1 Appraise the Merits of Using the Qualitative Method BUS-7380 Assignment # 2 For the assignment this week, you were to write conclusive reasoning why you believe that qualitative research with the use of mixed-method design may be able to answer your type of research questions. Even though the readings and activities were called introspective by the author of the assignment, you were told to use scholarly knowledge to back your thoughts or ideas. The author of this assignment was extremely explanatory as to what he wanted to see in this paper. This week, instead of giving a script, the author of the assignment gave an outline to follow. Within a 3- to 5-page paper, using 5 or more scholarly sources, you were to follow an outline that started with an overview of
  • 2. qualitative design, determine a way to employ mixed methods approach in your design, connect it with your degree field, explain how mixed-method design would affect your research, then construct a framework for your research problem. The author wanted you to focus on the framework of your possible qualitative research within this paper. Each one of these sections of the outline could have been larger than the one to two paragraphs that were asked for. Therefore, much of this needed to be very succinct, clear, and concise writing that followed the reading material found in this week's required readings. To be able to keep this under 5 pages while making sure that your theoretical or conceptual framework for your topic’s research problem was the main idea of this paper, it seems as if your idea for your proposed research should have been the main idea throughout the entire paper. The feedback process consisted of a four-part summary (four- parts listed below), a few short, location-specific balloon- comments found within the margins of the text, and the highlighting of grammar, punctuation, or APA styling errors found within the text. Make sure that you view your document with the track changes (review toolbar) set to ALL MARKUP to be able to see all the comments. The summary is split into four parts. These four parts consist of grammar/punctuation, conformity with APA style citations, conformity with APA style references, and content. The order of the parts listed does not intend to emphasize the importance of the parts as the content is always the most important part of the assignment. Therefore, it is listed at the end because normal memory concentrates on what was heard / read last. What was found: Grammar/ Punctuation There was mostly a lack of punctuation problems throughout your writing. Most of the problems dealt with comma usage, which led to some issues with run-on sentences. Do not forget to use the free Grammarly program that NCU provides to the students through NCU's Academic Success Center. There was a
  • 3. link to the direct source in the feedback for assignment 1. This software program will help determine if you do need a comma placed within your sentence. It can help you to learn where to place the commas as you write. Many of your problems were with missing commas after introductory clauses, between independent clauses, in compound sentences, conjunctions, and before the word"which". Missing commas in compound sentences led to run-on sentences. Make sure you proofread or enlist another to help proofread your work prior to submitting it. There are also some places that are missing an article prior to a noun. The placement of this article is needed for a proper sentence. Each time that a grammatical or punctuation error within your work, I have highlighted it. APA style citations There were citations that were not in APA format within your work. There are also areas where citations were needed but were missing. When you use the ideas or work of others, you must use a citation. This seems most evident whenever you had an explanation of a definition, such as the mixed-method approach and qualitative or quantitative methodology. The citations that had APA errors are highlighted, and the places that needed a citation are marked using the marginal comments. APA style references It seems like all of your references are missing the digital object identifier if it was a scholarly journal article or where it was published if it was a book. Make sure that you put "the where" when you reference your source. This seems to be the only thing missing from your sources. Content Although all the questions were notated, they were not answered with enough detail to explain the processes. You were to overview of qualitative design, determine a way to employ mixed methods approach in your design, connect it with your
  • 4. degree field, explain how mixed-method design would affect your research, then construct a framework for your research problem. You seemed to explain that the concepts are important in the field of business and in the field of diversity. You did not give an overview of qualitative design or explain the main components of qualitative design. What type of research is qualitative? You mentioned that a mixed-method approach will also fit with business and the field of diversity but you do not explain how. You also do not explain how mixed methods could affect your research. Having good research is not explaining the effect of it. Another example of the lack of detail in the answer is within the question of the framework. You did not construct a theoretical or conceptual framework for your research problem within this paper. I wonder if you are missing the idea of what the theoretical or conceptual framework might be. Look at this source from NCU's library for more information on theoretical Frameworks: https://ncu.libanswers.com/faq/220565 This source may help you understand the reasoning and construction of the framework. You will need this for your dissertation and any research project as you go forward. Another helpful resource can also be found using the library database and can quickly be found using this website: https://commons.ncu.edu/sites/default/files/file_file/the_theoreti cal_framework.pdf If you still have problems with the idea of a conceptual or theoretical framework you can find more help in a group session with NCU's Academic Success Center by following this link: https://ncu.libanswers.com/asc/faq/239140 I have heard that students have received loads of help determining their own theoretical framework by attending the group sessions. I hope that one of these sources can help you realize if you are using a conceptual or theoretical framework. These are two
  • 5. different objectives. One of them works better in qualitative methodology and the other works better in a quantitative methodology. It does not seem as if you pulled this concept out of your required reading for this week, but the theoretical or conceptual framework is a necessity in research methods of any sort. The theoretical or conceptual framework is also going to follow you throughout the next 5- weeks of this course. You will need to understand the concept behind the framework as you move forward. You will need to know your conceptual or theoretical framework as you go forward. Because I was late getting your feedback back to you, I have graded your submission extremely liberally. Your email will answer your question about assignment 3. You had a choice within my reply to your email. This liberal grading had nothing to do with your choice. This grading of assignment 2 is just because I lost you and my grading process. I apologize again for any discomfort that this may have put upon you. If you have any questions about any part of this, please feel free to contact me via Skype or NCU email. V. Lindsay, PhD 8.5 /10 10/19/19 Overview of Qualitative Research Qualitative research is one of the methodologies that can be
  • 6. used when studying the effects of diversity in the workplace. The use of qualitative research is important because it is a good way of managing and simplifying data without ruining the context and the complexity (Atieno, 2009). The qualitative methods are critical in areas where the preemptive cutting out of data will prevent the full discovery of the intended topic. It is important to use the qualitative approach when looking at diversity in the workplace because it will help in discovering more and doing justice to the topic and making more complex interpretations of the same (Walliman, 2017). The qualitative method is also important because it generates a new way of interpreting the data that might already be there. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: How? Explain how you can do this by using qualitative methodology. You are not fully answering the questions asked of you. It is important to use qualitative methodology while looking at diversity, but the question asked how you would do it. How are you going to use the qualitative methodology to answer your research question? What is qualitative methodology? What is the overview of qualitative research? The idea that it is important is true, but how is it important to research? Read your question and explain the question that the author asked. The use of the qualitative research in this case is also important because it will help to understand the issue of diversity in the workplace in deep detail. The phenomena of diversity in the workplace is not widely researched and the use of the qualitative research will help in understanding the core concerns of the essence of having a diverse workplace (Cameron, R., & Molina-Azorin, 2011). The use of qualitative research requires one to have a clear topic as well as the necessary concentration to deal with such matters. In research it is important that the method fits the kind of data which is to be collected. The qualitative research method is appropriate for the use in the study on diversity in the workplace. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: This word is the plural version of the phenomenon. Therefore, the plural version of the verb should be
  • 7. used. If you meant to use the singular version of the word, the phenomenon, it was mistakenly written as the plural. Make sure that you proofread your work to keep this from happening. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: What kind of data is collected when using qualitative research? You never explained this. This is one of the most important concepts when qualitative research is discussed. Potential of Using Mixed Method s Mixed methods have been used in the social science research for a long time, but it is yet to be fully embraced in business research. Mixed methods involve combining the elements of both qualitative and quantitative research (Harrison III, 2013). The use of mixed methods helps in increasing the depth of understanding on a topic through the various approaches. I believe that there is potential of using methods when it comes to the study of diversity in the workplace. Qualitative data is made up of words while the quantitative one is made up of numbers. I believe using the both can be beneficial to the study. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Don’t use first- or second-person voice within academic papers. Be careful of doing this in the future. Most academics do not allow it, and APA forbids second person and only allows first person in a few cases. APA states that the use of it causes a disconnect with the reader. Authors of research do not want a disconnect with the reader. If you would like to know more about the use of first- or second-person voice, please see page 69 of the APA 6th ed Publication Manual. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Citation needed. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Explain why. The qualitative data that is obtained can the coded in a quantitative manner. The numerical values can be used in certain ways to further interpret the results of the study. The values are also better when it comes to examining the hypotheses that are presented (Harrison III, 2013). The use of quantitative coding does not mean that the information is less qualitative but what it does is open up the data to a wide range
  • 8. of possibilities. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Is to open the data… The mixed methods approach can be used to study the diversity in the workplace. The data obtained qualitatively can be coded for further interpretation of the results. There is no method that exists alone in a vacuum and therefore such an approach is important. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Hypen needed for mixed-methods Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: You need to explain how this can happen. There is no explanation here. Knowing that it can happen is good, but discussing how it can be done is necessary for the question to be answered fully. How would you use the mixed-method approach to find the answer to your proposed research question? Degree Path Influence on Research Approach The degree path that I am taking is of business administration. Business research has been there for a long time and there are various studies that have been done on various topics in the area. It is important, however, to note that business is continuously changing in response to the environment that it is in. It is critical to make sure that there is up to date information in business administration that can help guide the core decision makers in the industry. There are limited studies that have been done on the role of diversity in the workplace and whether it is necessary. The issue of diversity has been for long been a political issue but it is now important to look at it from a practical business side. Is there are benefit to the business when there is diversity? When such a question is properly answered using data and statistics, the decision makers will make an informed choice on the way ahead in the days ahead. Business administrators will be able to make better choices when hiring and other business decisions. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: No need to make this into a prepositional phrase. Remove “of” Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: I am unclear as to what this means in this context. What are you trying to say here? Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: What is “it” in this
  • 9. sentence? Why is “it” important? This is not clear. You may want to use the word not the pronoun. Clarity is key when answering the question in a short, precise answer such as this one. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: There is no citation or a source throughout this whole paragraph. How do you know that any of this is true? Where did the information come from? World View and Research The world view that one has will have an effect on the research. The thoughts on the business will be significant effect on the outcome of the research. It is the significance of the research on diversity that is influencing this research. The researcher is keen to have data and statistics which either support the diversity in the work place or the lack of it. The workplace needs to be as diverse as the consumers which it serves, and I believe this research will act as a guide on this issue. Diversity needs to go further from being a political issue to one which is data driven with clear benefits of the same being discovered (De Aquino & Robertson, 2018). Diversity has been a core issue in workplaces, and it is important to add onto the body of literature that seeks to understand the role of diversity in multicultural settings around the world. The conceptual framework is aligned to ensure the results reflect the true state of diversity in the workplace. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: What does this mean? This does not make sense as written. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Citation? Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Place of work = workplace = one word. Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: People = who Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: Citation of the source where you found the information that makes you believe this? Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: APA does not condone the use of subjects that are not people using people verbs. This is called anthropomorphism. Check the APA 6th edition Publication Manual page 69 for the explanation of anthropomorphism and the characteristics of them. Literature cannot seek to understand. People or authors of the literature can seek the information. It is much more clear when the
  • 10. authors are named as the actors. I understand what you are trying to state. However, you cannot allow inanimate objects to do things that only people can do. This is an example of anthropomorphism. It is not allowed in APA. Basically, you are allowing a thing to do the human action. Make your subject into a human. “The researchers seek to find…. “ For more information go to this website: https://academicguides.waldenu.edu/writingcenter/apa/other/ant hropomorphism References Comment by Vicki Lindsay, PhD: It seems like all of your references are missing the digital object identifier if it was a scholarly journal article or where it was published if it was a book. Make sure that you put "the where" when you reference your source. This seems to be the only thing missing from your sources. Harrison III, R. L. (2013).
