• Hand hygiene: A general term that applies to either
handwashing, antiseptic handwash, antiseptic hand
rub, or surgical hand antisepsis.
• Hand antisepsis: Refers to either antiseptic handwash
or antiseptic hand rub.
• Handwashing: Washing hands with plain (i.e., non-
antimicrobial) soap and water.
