Introduction
The International Facility Management Association (IFMA), the Worlds leading FM
professional body, defines FM as, ‘A profession that encompasses multiple disciplines to ensure
functionality of the built environment by integrating people, place, process and technology.’
Traditionally, Facilities Management was done in-house by the organization itself. However,
post 1980s era has witnessed the focusing of core business and by organizations. Organizations
started outsourcing Facilities Management. Earlier outsourcing of Facilities Management was led
by the US and Europe. However, off late this trend has become a global phenomenon.
The outburst of Digital Revolution has introduced a new paradigm in Facilities Management. In
this, the entire operating cycle of facilities management is executed through digital technologies.

• It is estimated that 30% of corporate real estate portfolios could be flexible workspace by
2030.
• When the much-heralded IFRS 16 – the new international leases standard – comes into force
on 1 January 2019, real estate leases, including office spaces, will need to be accounted for on
balance sheets. Under exemptions, companies may opt to move to shorter lease terms or
outsource office spaces to serviced providers instead, as these would not need to be, in
general, accounted for on balance sheets, helping to reduce the administrative burden.

Introduction The International Facility Management Association (IFMA), the Worlds leading FM professional body, defines FM as, ‘A profession that encompasses multiple disciplines to ensure functionality of the built environment by integrating people, place, process and technology.’ Traditionally, Facilities Management was done in-house by the organization itself. Under exemptions, companies may opt to move to shorter lease terms or outsource office spaces to serviced providers instead, as these would not need to be, in general, accounted for on balance sheets, helping to reduce the administrative burden.
