MATTER
Scientists classify things by their
composition

Mixtures, elements, compounds
How to
               classify????
   Can separate physically? = Mixture

Can separate chemically? = Pure Substance
Mixtures

t wo or more substances
not chemically combined
retain characteristic properties
Types of Mixtures:

Homogeneous

Heterogenous
Homogenous

appears the same throughout
“well mixed”
the particles that make up the mixture
are very small and hard to recognize
Heterogenous

does not appear the same throughout
the particles in the mixture are large
enough to be seen and separated from
the mixture
no specific proportion
Types of Pure Substances

Compounds

Elements
Elements

made of atoms
atoms in the same elements are alike
atoms in different elements are not
Compounds

made from more than one element
can be broken down into simpler
substances
SEPARATION
TECHNIQUES
Distillation

a process that separates the substances
in a solution based on their boiling
points
#1 B
                       U
                           #2
                       F
                       F

temp (c˚) E
                       R
                           plateau
            plateau

                      time (mins)
Filtration

a process that separates materials
based on the size of particles and/or
solubility
solid isolated

funnel w/ filter paper

    filtrate
Evaporation

a process used to isolate a solid dissolved
in a liquid property: solubility
NaCl: sodium chloride
                        water
CHEMICAL
PROPERTIES
What is a chemical property?
Any ability to produce a change in the
composition of matter

Chemical properties can be obser ved
only when the substances in a sample or
matter are changing into different
substances.
Flammability

a material’s ability to burn in the
presence of oxygen.
Flammability

a material’s ability to burn in the
presence of oxygen.
Flammability

a material’s ability to burn in the
presence of oxygen.
Flammability

a material’s ability to burn in the
presence of oxygen.
Reactivity

how readily a substance combines
chemically with other substances
What is a chemical change?
when a substance reacts and forms one
or more new substances

change in color

production of a gas

formation of a precipitate

change in temperature
Review Questions
How could you use physical properties
      to separate mixtures?
What is are the differences bet ween a
  solution, suspension, and colloid?
What is a physical property?
What is an example of a chemical
separation technique that we talked
              about?
What is a chemical change?
