If that isn’t enough, we have our four-legged friend Oreo to
keep us company. Oreo loves to bark but that is just his way of
letting his voice be heard. We won’t hold that against him.
As an Ad Manager with N2 Publishing, I make sure the business end of things runs like a smooth-oiled machine. I work
behind-the-scenes with our advertisers and make sure their ads
are up to their specifications.

Meet N2 Staff Member
Marci Fenter – Ad Manager

Hi! My name is Marci and I am your Ad Manager. I reside
in Mason with my wonderful husband Jeff and our three
children: Allison (a freshman at Ohio State), Emily (a junior
at Ursuline Academy), and Chris (a freshman at St. X).

But that’s not all I do. I am also the person to turn to if you
need extra copies of the magazine or if you are not receiving
your monthly publication. I also handle the Resident Business
Guide and make sure that your business listings are published
each month in this special section.
I simply love what I do. One of the highlights of my job is viewing the proofs before they go to print. This gives me the golden
opportunity to see all the pictures and read the wonderful stories about the residents. It’s great to work for a company that
I love. I believe in N2’s vision of turning neighborhoods into
communities and am proud to be a part of this process.
When I am not busy at work, you can find me hiking, biking, or
being active outside. One of my favorite places to hit the ground
running is the Little Miami Bike Trail. It’s one of the hidden
gems in Cincinnati where I can breathe in the fresh air and
enjoy the natural surroundings. Of course, there’s always Winton Woods or Sharon Woods too.
I also like to read. I am known as the “book thief,” and like
to steal the books that my children read. So if they can’t find
their copy, they know who is to blame. I really enjoy mysteries,
especially those that deal with crimes or murders. It adds a little
excitement to my life.
When I want to kick back and relax I like to watch the “Walking
Dead” on television with my kids. It is something that we look
forward to and definitely makes us sit at the edge of our seat.
As a family, we also love to watch the Reds. It doesn’t get any
better than going to the ballpark and watching our favorite team
score a home run. Go Reds!
So now you know a little more about me and what an Ad Manager does all day. I am committed to serving you in any way that
I can and making your neighborhood publication work for you.

DAYTIME

Braid Lane residents passed their summer
days together at their patio parties! Sally
McCarthy hosted in July, the kids played
volleyball, ate ice cream floats and then
played flashlight tag. In August Matt
Allen and Victoria Sheild hosted a patio
party. The kids played pickle, jumped on
the trampoline and ran all over the yard
having a blast while the men enjoyed a
game of corn hole. Fun was enjoyed by all
throughout the summer!

Bill O’Reilly’s Killing Lincoln was the topic of discussion. This is not just a history
book. As O’Reilly said, it was “written as a thriller.” We were all interested in the new
facts and some unproven conjectures. For example, Jefferson Davis and his agents
had set aside $1 million in gold to pay for “acts of espionage and intrigue against the
Union.” From this fund, John Wilkes Booth was paid $1,500 when he was formulating his initial plan to kidnap Lincoln. We were all surprised by the fact that Lincoln
had so little security. The night he was killed, the one bodyguard on duty had a long
reputation of tardiness and dereliction of duty. He had left Ford’s theater, was drinking at the adjoining bar, then fled the scene after the assassination. The massive manhunt for Booth resulting in the deaths of 87 troops who drowned in the Maryland
swamps was such a horrible footnote to this manhunt. The conspiracy could possibly
have been far reaching into the government and even up to Secretary of War Stanton,
but this was never proven. However, it was suspicious that Stanton withheld Booth’s
diary for two years, and 18 pages were missing. When Booth was located, he was shot
in the neck and lay paralyzed for hours before his death. I was surprised to learn that
the cervical vertebrae from his neck are at Walter Reed Medical Center and clearly
show the path of the bullet. We thought this book had many good aspects to discuss.

also likes to greet each member of the Vetter family with a kiss
when they wake up. How thoughtful is that?
One fun fact about Shiva is that she did not know what to do
with snow the first time she saw it. Since the Vetter family got
Shiva when they lived in Florida, snow was a whole new experience for their furry friend. The first time she saw it, she liked to
lay in it, which seemed like the right thing to do.

Meet Adorable
Goldendoodle Shiva!

Shiva is also one smart dog. When she hears someone put
on their shoes, she knows that they are getting ready to leave.
That means only one thing: time to go in her cage for a while.
But Shiva doesn’t mind. It gives her time to plan out her next
teddy bear attack. One of these days, she figures, she will be
able to hide her teddy bear and it will be hers for keeps. Only
time will tell!

Written by Elizabeth McCabe

There’s nothing like the constant
companionship and warmth that a dog
can provide that can truly make a house

We are so proud to feature Shiva in this month’s edition of the
Heritage HOMEfront! Shiva’s owners, Amy and Rob Vetter
along with Austin and Jagger have been living in the neighborhood since October last year. They love the fact that their neighbors are so friendly and have been easy to get to know. We wish
the Vetter family the best in Heritage Club with their precious
pet, Shiva. What a wonderful family!

a home. The Vetter family can attest
to that fact. Their Goldendoodle Shiva
(pronounced “Sheeva”) makes living at
the household fun for everyone!

This Goldendoodle was purchased from a purebred breeder in
Tennessee that they found online. With a few clicks of their
mouse, Shiva was on a plane and headed to her forever home.
Amy, Rob, Jagger, and Austin could not be happier with their
purchase. Neither could Shiva.

ISAACS’ SHAKER HILL

Shiva is a very friendly dog and simply loves people. She is kind
to everyone she meets. With her charming personality, she is
warmly welcomed by all who meet her. Her wagging tail lets
others know that she enjoys their company.
Jagger and Austin really like their four-legged friend and can’t
imagine life without Shiva. They take excellent care of her and play
with Shiva all the time. Shiva also likes to play with them and actually likes to steal their teddy bears, believe it or not! She waits until
no one is in the room and snatches her favorite teddy bear away.
She even tries to hide them, but Jagger and Austin always find out.

11/30/13

17

When Shiva is not hiding teddy bears, she likes to play fetch
with her ball in the yard. It’s a great way to get some exercise and keeps her entertained. Shiva also enjoys taking walks
around Heritage Club as well as exploring the yard while contained in her invisible fence.
Shiva is a lot of fun. Every morning she likes to get up and see
if the neighbor dogs are out. It’s her way of being friendly. Shiva

After reading The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, I was reluctant to read
Khaled Hosseini's most recent book, And the Mountains Echoed. The tragedies, both
large and small, visited upon the innocents are hard to take. This book, too, is set in
Afghanistan and begins with a brother and sister who are separated against their will.
This central tragedy is the main focus of the book but Hosseini introduces many other
characters along the way. It almost had the feel of many short stories, linked to the
central characters. The incredible detail of each story and each character made the
book a very interesting (albeit sad) read.

Rita explains that they have had the Santa Shop for six years or
so down at St. Francis School. Rita and residents of Heritage
Club buy all the toys and items to stock this special shop.
Each student at St. Francis School, which totals 165 students
from preschool to eighth grade, visits the Santa Shop to select
gifts for the ones that they love. It’s an experience that always
warms the hearts of the students as well as the volunteers in
Heritage Club. There’s nothing like giving to others to bring
some fresh Christmas cheer into the holidays.
“We buy all the gifts,” Rita explains, “which total $5 to $8
each.” Each student can pick five gifts for their family members.
Whether a child is looking for a present for their brother, sister,
grandpa, or mother, they are sure to find it in the Santa Shop.

The Santa Shop will open its doors on December 9th. Approximately 25 volunteers from Heritage Club go down to St. Francis to pair up with the students to help them select the gifts of
their choosing. Rita explains that various tables display gifts for
boys, girls, and also household items. Items are put in bags and
taken out the door. It is a touching experience for all who are
involved. The students get there as early as 8am in eager anticipation for the doors to open. The doors generally close by noon.
“Most of them are so excited,” Rita shares. “Not only do the
children benefit,” she adds, “but it is an amazing experience to go
down too.” To see the children smile from ear to ear and see how
much the Santa Shop means to them is simply beyond words.
Since the children at St. Francis can’t afford gifts, the gifts that
they receive really save the season for them and gives new meaning to Christmas. What’s even better is the joy that the children
receive when they give the gifts to their family members. It’s
amazing to see that a $5 gift can touch so many people. Maybe
that’s why they say it is more blessed to give than to receive.
If you would like to make a difference for a child in need at St.
Francis School, Rita and other volunteers in Heritage Club are
looking for more volunteers. They are specifically looking for men
to pair up with the students in selecting their gifts at the Santa
Shop as Santa’s helpers. Also, you are more than welcome to
donate new gifts (valued at $5 to $8) for this important cause. For
more information, contact Rita Keim (ritakeim@cinci.rr.com or
754-0171) or Joan Campbell (jcampbell23@cinci.rr.com). They
would love for you to make a difference for the children at St.
Francis School!

Piper Reed

Written by Elizabeth McCabe
Pictures Submitted by N2 Staff Member

At age eight, you would think that Piper Reed
is just like any other young girl. She likes
to eat at The Cheesecake Factory, listen to
Taylor Swift, and hang out with her friends.
But there’s one thing that sets her apart from
others her age – her skill in gymnastics.

twists are lots of fun to do. It is also a blast to jump for joy with
your friends.

a lot of friends there. Piper also likes
gymnastics because it has increased her
strength, which proves necessary when
you master advanced moves. Not to mention that it is also excellent exercise.

Because of dedication and discipline,
Piper is proving herself to be a natural in
the sport. She works on tumbling, bars,
beam, and vault for a total of 17 hours a
week! And when you’re only eight, that
speaks volumes about how devoted you
are to the sport.

Piper is able to a standing tuck, which
might be one her favorite moves so far.
But among beam, floor, bars, and vault,
Piper likes all of them equally. There’s
always something fun to do on each rotation, whether that is working on front
handsprings on vault, advanced moves on
bars, and just working on tumbling passes
on the floor.

Fortunately, it is not all hard work. Piper
also has a lot of fun in the process. She
takes lessons at Perfection Gymnastics
School in West Chester and has found

Piper’s big sister Eavan also helps Piper
perfect her skills in gymnastics. It is always
great to have a sister to look up to and follow in her footsteps. On the Reed family’s

In case you didn’t know, the Reed family has been living in Heritage Club for eight years now. There’s always someone in the
neighborhood to play with which makes it an excellent place to
raise a family. With the pool and club, there are a lot of options
too. That’s why the club is like a second home to the Reed family.
The people there are so friendly and make you feel welcome.

Spring Break trip to the Cayman Islands,
Eavan taught Piper to do a round off, back
handspring, back tuck combination on the
beach. They were quite a sight and actually
had a number of people watching Piper do
her flips. How fun is that!
Another thing that Piper likes to do is go
to Kings Island. With so many rides and
attractions there is always something fun
to do at this amusement park. The Reed
family likes to go there at least once during the summer months before Piper has
to go back to school.
In Piper’s spare time, she likes to jump
on her trampoline in the backyard. The
trampoline is a perfect place to practice
what she has been learning at Perfection
Gymnastics School. Jumps, flips, and

We Enjoyed Hearty Italian Favorites at Maggiano’s Little Italy!
Everyone enjoys hearty Italian favorites that warm the soul.
Heritage Club residents are no exception. On September 10th,
residents pleased their palates with a three-course offering at
Maggiano’s Little Italy. Located on 7875 Montgomery Road, the
culinary staff did an amazing job at wowing everyone’s taste buds.

From the moment we strolled into the restaurant, the scents of
Italian cooking wafted through the atmosphere. One guest noted
that it “smelled wonderful” and it certainly did. We felt welcome
in its “warm” and “inviting” atmosphere as we took our seats. The
white tablecloths only enhanced our experience and increased our
expectations for the evening.
What was on the menu? The night began with an Italian Tossed
Salad complemented by freshly baked bread. We also enjoyed a
scrumptious “zucchini appetizer” (formally known as the Crispy
Zucchini Fritte) that was definitely worth every bite. There’s
nothing better than dunking your fried zucchini in the marinara
sauce and appreciating the crunch of this appetizer. For some,
this was the highlight of the night. Then there were the Stuffed
Mushrooms (stuffed with spinach and topped with breadcrumbs)
and served in a garlic white wine sauce. These delicious bites of
flavor were a nice way to start our night together as we engaged
in small talk, while eagerly anticipating the second course.
We certainly weren’t disappointed with the four selections that
we were served next. We enjoyed Four-Cheese Ravioli, Parmesan Crusted Tilapia (yes, there is such an option!), and Mag-

giano’s Famous Rigatoni “D.” What’s that you say? Let me decipher it for you. The Rigatoni “D” consisted of Rigatoni pasta,
herb-roasted chicken, mushrooms, and caramelized onions, all
tossed in a Marsala cream sauce.
We also savored everyone’s favorite – the Chicken Parmesan.
If anyone knows how to master the Chicken Parmesan, it is
certainly the experts at Maggiano’s. With the fried chicken
breasts topped with Provolone cheese and marinara sauce, it
was downright delicious.
Our night ended with Vera’s Lemon Cookies, for those who
wanted a tasty treat to eat. And for the more adventurous, the
Tiramisu. This was one dessert that was hard to pass up. It was
simply something you had to taste to believe. Let’s just say it
was worth the extra calories.
If you didn’t get to join us, why don’t you venture out and try
this gem with your family and friends? Make sure you start your
night with the Crispy Zucchini Fritte. Personally, I think it’s the
best item on the menu and hopefully you will too.

Are You Satisfied with your Child’s
Current Progress this School Year?
NO?

READING AT HOME
Submitted by Thomas Spotts, M Ed Ohio Licensed Reading
Specialist, Director...Focus13 Learning Center, LLC

Frank Smith,
author of the text
Understanding
Reading

At Focus13 we
emphatically
endorse this philosophy in our
reading program. Why? It simply works!
As a parent/guardian, how can you help
your child become a better reader? Let’s
start with the reading material itself…
It is important to have somewhat of a
handle on your child’s INDEPENDENT
& INSTRUCTIONAL READING
LEVELS…these are approximate grade
level ranges.
INDEPENDENT…is just what it
sounds like. They can read this material without any help, with the exception
sometimes of proper nouns in the stories.
INSTRUCTIONAL…is what teachers will commonly refer to as your
child’s current reading level. This
material will need an adult present to
give some help throughout the book.
NOTE—if the adult has to provide
help for approximately five or more
words on each page (not including
irregular proper nouns) for consecutive
pages, this book is probably at your
child’s FRUSTRATION level. You
want to avoid these at all costs! Your
child’s current reading teacher should

Let us Help….

“…Children learn to read & become more competent
readers by READING and BEING READ TO…”

be able to give you these approximate
levels if you are unsure.
With this in mind, try and maintain an
approximate 50-50 balance each week
between these two levels of materials
when your child reads. We strongly recommend linking to http://www.arbookfind.com to get the most accurate level of
a book — the level listed on the back of
many books is either too broad a range
or often inaccurate. We never go into a
bookstore without our smart-phone, so
we can quickly use this link to check the
level of books we are considering buying.
It’s a very user-friendly link!
Knowing your child’s interest areas is
often second nature to a parent. So by all
means encourage your children to choose
material they WANT to read and are
motivated to do so. This IS critical for
engagement purposes and even more so
for reluctant or struggling readers.
However, a caveat is needed here. Often,
books in your child’s interest level will also
be in their FRUSTRATION level and we
do NOT want them reading at this level! It
discourages reading.
So, what’s the compromise? Allow them
to get the book…since we want to encourage a lifelong love of reading…BUT YOU
WILL BE THE ONE DOING ALL
THE READING! For books in a child’s
interest area but NOT in their current reading range, he or she needs to be the listener.

Don’t discourage books with pictures,
especially with students in kindergarten3rd grade. These are often more enjoyable
for the child, especially Caldecott Medal
books, and they offer rich context clues for
the child to help decode words and increase
understanding. We encourage picture books
for kids in grades 4-8 who struggle with
reading. The titles just are more of a challenge to find at this grade level.

When reading instructional level material
with your child…
It is optimal in the beginning (especially
if the child is having some difficulty due
to the topic/content), to trade-off at each
“stop sign” (period, ? or !). This should be
faded after a few pages and then the child
reads paragraphs and/or pages, alternating
with you. It is important that you make
sure the child follows your reading when
it’s not their turn. Here is where having
two copies of a book are beneficial. The
“flow” of a story/book and the ability to
understand is reduced when you have to
continually help the child find their place
when it’s their turn to read. If a child finds
a word extremely difficult to decode…
after trying a few strategies…then by all
means GIVE them the word and go on.
We recommend doing this almost immediately for many proper nouns that don’t
lend themselves to basic decoding strategies. Next time, we’ll discuss environmental tips that help when reading at home.
Meanwhile... HAPPY READING! from

FINANCIAL FITNESS
Submitted by Bill Lendl, Raymond James | From the March 2010 issue of Financial Journeys newsletter

Critical Choices Precede Retirement
As retirement looms, crucial financial and lifestyle decisions you
may have put off for years suddenly assume more importance.
You no longer have decades to decide whether you’ll keep a large
house with its upkeep costs, whether your current level of debt is
appropriate or whether to pay off your mortgage.

Before you actually hang up your career, it’s time to do some
real planning. You might begin with lifestyle decisions, although
these, to a large extent, depend on the financial foundation
you’ve built. While these are personal decisions, successful
retirements share at least one common element – they are rooted in reality, not fantasy.
Consider some possibilities. Will you plan to relocate? Or do
developing family or financial considerations make that idea less
attractive? Do you need to maintain and insure more than one
vehicle? Do you expect to travel extensively in your early years

of retirement, when you may be healthier and more likely to
accept the rigors of travel?
Finally, can your lifestyle plans be supported by your portfolio? If not, now is the time to make adjustments rather than
later. Anecdotal evidence shows that retirees who scale back
their expectations are far happier in retirement than those who
wake up already retired and find they can’t really do all that
they had planned.
Retirement Bottom Line
You’ve been marshaling your finances for years, and while you
may have had intermediate goals, funding a pleasing retirement
lifestyle has probably been a long-term objective. As you near
your last day on the job, it’s time to make adjustments.
First, you may want to realign your portfolio’s asset allocation,
especially if you’ve been an aggressive investor with a high
tolerance for risk. In retirement, your time horizon is shorter,
recovering from major market downturns is more difficult – and
you’ll probably want a regular income stream to pay your bills.
Your retirement could be lengthy, so if your wealth is sufficient,
you may consider dividing your portfolio into two parts. One
would be devoted to producing a regular income while the other
would be allocated for growth. Ideally, this part of your portfolio
would help you overcome the effects of inflation, which, historically, at least, has moved along at approximately 3.1% per year.
As you calculate how much you’ll need, keep in mind that
retirement specialists suggest drawing down no more than 4%
or 5% of your portfolio each year, to give it the best chance of
supporting a long retirement. Remember, part of your annual
income will come from any required minimum distributions
(RMDs) the IRS requires you to take from your traditional
IRA assets.

513-755-1935

No matter what your decisions, the time to work toward them
is before your retirement party. Please call me if you have questions or need assistance in your planning.
Asset allocation does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss.

Shares Her Tip For The Fall Market
Spring is NOT the best time to list your home for sale!

Contrary to popular belief, Spring is not the best time to list your home for sale. The best time is
November, December and January, which most people think is the worst time.
It comes down to supply and demand. Most sellers assume buyers aren’t seriously looking during this
prolonged holiday season. And yet, many buyers are looking at properties in person and online right
up until Christmas Eve. If the right home goes on the market in mid-December, a serious buyer —
and there will be a lot of them — will take note.
And once the New Year starts, buyers who have resolved to buy a house will start looking. If your house
is one of just a few on the market, it will get the first look. The idea of spring being the best time to sell
grew out of families’ desire to move before the new school year starts in September. But the majority of
buyers today don’t have children. Call today for a FREE market analysis of your home.

Pinball Wizard in

Heritage Club
In the October issue, the Business Beat article featured Ellen Knotts and her business VPCabs. A photo of Ellen Knotts and Susan Brewer may of
suggested that Susan Brewer was affiliated with VPCabs. We would like to clarify that Susan Brewer is not a part of VPCabs.
Name: Ellen van den Berg - Knott
Position: Co-Founder
Company name: VPCabs, Inc.
Website: www.VPCABS.com
Phone: 513-288-6590
Business Address: Cincinnati, Ohio
Industry: Gaming

In our last issue we featured Ellen Knott’ s new company
VPCabs. The “VP” in VPCabs stands for Virtual Pinball and
“Cabs” stands for cabinets. A virtual pinball cabinet is essentially a high tech pinball machine.
We are very pleased to re-run this article with an important
update: Ellen’s pinball machines have been given the prestigious
honor of being displayed at the World Pinball Hall of Fame in
Las Vegas Nevada. Beginning in November 2013, a VPCabs Vir-

tual Pinball Machine will be on display for the millions that visit
the museum every year…. Congrats to Ellen and her partner!
If you missed last months story, Traditional pinball machines
are mechanical in nature and only offer a single playing field. A
VPCabs pinball machine features a high resolution LED monitor mounted in a modern pinball cabinet that renders every
pinball playing field ever made… You can actually have over 200
pinball games on a single machine.
Ellen Co-Founded the company this past year as a result of discussion with a family friend that inspired the idea. The company
originally introduced the VP2000 model and 5 original artwork
graphic packages. The cabinets are manufactured right here in
Cincinnati Ohio. The machines have been featured at various
shows around the country and most recently at COMIC CON in
San Diego where the machine received a sensational review.

Gamers, adults, and kids love the unit. An internal Windows
7 computer powers the high definition playing field. The deep
audio comes from the built-in speakers sub woofer. All the pinball games have been reduced to software and they are stored on
a solid-state hard drive. The player simply selects a game table
to play and the field is rendered for play in about 3 seconds.
Machines are now being sold from coast to coast and even in
Canada via the company website, VPCabs.com. As a natural
expansion, VPCabs has introduced a Classic Arcade game cabinet
that features 60 of the greatest arcade games made. The company
has also just introduced its compact pinball cabinet called the mini.
Ellen has been a living in the estates portion of Heritage Club
for 7 years and has 5 kids ranging from 7 to 16 years of age.
Her husband Richard co-owns a software company in Cincinnati and together they stay quite busy.
Ellen is a native of the Netherlands and has dual citizenship
from the US and Holland. She has an accounting and business

degree. As busy as the Knott’s are, Ellen finds time to volunteer
with another start-up here in Cincinnati called Mentor Me.
This is a non-profit organization that focuses on helping young
adults transition from the Ohio Foster Care system to independent living. This has also led the Knott’s to seek their Foster
Care certification from the state and they are seeking to foster/
adopt in the future.
If you have a family room, game room, or finished basement,
then you should also have a VPCabs pinball or arcade machine!
Just visit the website www.VPCabs.com and checkout the product line. The games make a great addition to a home theater too!
Christmas orders are being taken now and there is a great deal
on a pinball/arcade bundle!
VPCabs also makes custom corporate machines too; complete
with custom graphics to include the corporate logo and colors!
The site features a contact form that you can use to ask questions about the products and sales.

Get your glow back! INCISIONLESS,
Natural Volume Restoration using your body's own living tissue!

MENTION THIS AD FOR A $100.00 GIFT CERTIFICATE!
Fat transfer, or fat injection, is a cosmetic surgery procedure which can soften or eliminate the appearance of wrinkles and folds in the
face. During the procedure, fat is removed from another area of the body like the abdomen and is then reinjected into the skin beneath
the fold where it acts as a skin volume filler. The result is a much more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. Fat transfer may also be used
to add volume to the lips. The results of fat transfer are somewhat variable but up to 70% of the volume is virtually permanent!
This provides a far better value than synthetic fillers, which must typically be re-injected at least once per year to maintain the effect.

Oreo loves to bark but that is just his way of letting his voice be heard. We won’t hold that against him. As an Ad Manager with N2 Publishing, I make sure the business end of things runs like a smooth-oiled machine. I work behind-the-scenes with our advertisers and make sure their ads are up to their specifications. Meet N2 Staff Member Marci Fenter – Ad Manager Hi! My name is Marci and I am your Ad Manager. I reside in Mason with my wonderful husband Jeff and our three children: Allison (a freshman at Ohio State), Emily (a junior at Ursuline Academy), and Chris (a freshman at St. X). But that’s not all I do. I am also the person to turn to if you need extra copies of the magazine or if you are not receiving your monthly publication. I also handle the Resident Business Guide and make sure that your business listings are published each month in this special section. I simply love what I do. One of the highlights of my job is viewing the proofs before they go to print. This gives me the golden opportunity to see all the pictures and read the wonderful stories about the residents. It’s great to work for a company that I love. I believe in N2’s vision of turning neighborhoods into communities and am proud to be a part of this process. When I am not busy at work, you can find me hiking, biking, or being active outside. One of my favorite places to hit the ground running is the Little Miami Bike Trail. It’s one of the hidden gems in Cincinnati where I can breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the natural surroundings. Of course, there’s always Winton Woods or Sharon Woods too. I also like to read. I am known as the “book thief,” and like to steal the books that my children read. So if they can’t find their copy, they know who is to blame. I really enjoy mysteries, especially those that deal with crimes or murders. It adds a little excitement to my life. When I want to kick back and relax I like to watch the “Walking Dead” on television with my kids. It is something that we look forward to and definitely makes us sit at the edge of our seat. As a family, we also love to watch the Reds. It doesn’t get any better than going to the ballpark and watching our favorite team score a home run. Go Reds! So now you know a little more about me and what an Ad Manager does all day. I am committed to serving you in any way that I can and making your neighborhood publication work for you. November Book Club DAYTIME Braid Lane residents passed their summer days together at their patio parties! Sally McCarthy hosted in July, the kids played volleyball, ate ice cream floats and then played flashlight tag. In August Matt Allen and Victoria Sheild hosted a patio party. The kids played pickle, jumped on the trampoline and ran all over the yard having a blast while the men enjoyed a game of corn hole. Fun was enjoyed by all throughout the summer! Weight Loss Surgery WWW.JOURNEYLITE.COM L I B E R T Y ◦ Adjustable Gastric Banding ◦ Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass T W P O H I O WE INVITE YOU TO E XPERIENCE A SALON LIKE NO OTHER √ √ √ √ SURGICAL OPTIONS: 15 Bill O’Reilly’s Killing Lincoln was the topic of discussion. This is not just a history book. As O’Reilly said, it was “written as a thriller.” We were all interested in the new facts and some unproven conjectures. For example, Jefferson Davis and his agents had set aside $1 million in gold to pay for “acts of espionage and intrigue against the Union.” From this fund, John Wilkes Booth was paid $1,500 when he was formulating his initial plan to kidnap Lincoln. We were all surprised by the fact that Lincoln had so little security. The night he was killed, the one bodyguard on duty had a long reputation of tardiness and dereliction of duty. He had left Ford’s theater, was drinking at the adjoining bar, then fled the scene after the assassination. The massive manhunt for Booth resulting in the deaths of 87 troops who drowned in the Maryland swamps was such a horrible footnote to this manhunt. The conspiracy could possibly have been far reaching into the government and even up to Secretary of War Stanton, but this was never proven. However, it was suspicious that Stanton withheld Booth’s diary for two years, and 18 pages were missing. When Booth was located, he was shot in the neck and lay paralyzed for hours before his death. I was surprised to learn that the cervical vertebrae from his neck are at Walter Reed Medical Center and clearly show the path of the bullet. We thought this book had many good aspects to discuss. How thoughtful is that? One fun fact about Shiva is that she did not know what to do with snow the first time she saw it. The first time she saw it, she liked to lay in it, which seemed like the right thing to do. Meet Adorable Goldendoodle Shiva! Shiva is also one smart dog. When she hears someone put on their shoes, she knows that they are getting ready to leave. That means only one thing: time to go in her cage for a while. But Shiva doesn’t mind. It gives her time to plan out her next teddy bear attack. One of these days, she figures, she will be able to hide her teddy bear and it will be hers for keeps. Only time will tell! Book Club 18 NeighborhoodNews Heritage Homefront EVENING November November Heritage Homefront NeighborhoodNews 19 Written by Resident Denise Lynde After reading The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, I was reluctant to read Khaled Hosseini's most recent book, And the Mountains Echoed. The tragedies, both large and small, visited upon the innocents are hard to take. This book, too, is set in Afghanistan and begins with a brother and sister who are separated against their will. This central tragedy is the main focus of the book but Hosseini introduces many other characters along the way. It almost had the feel of many short stories, linked to the central characters. The incredible detail of each story and each character made the book a very interesting (albeit sad) read. Denise Lynde The Santa Shop is Making a Difference for Children at St. Francis School: One Gift at a Time! Written by Elizabeth McCabe The holiday season can be the most wonderful time of the year for those who have something underneath their tree. But not everyone is in this situation. Rita and residents of Heritage Club buy all the toys and items to stock this special shop. Each student at St. Francis School, which totals 165 students from preschool to eighth grade, visits the Santa Shop to select gifts for the ones that they love. It’s an experience that always warms the hearts of the students as well as the volunteers in Heritage Club. There’s nothing like giving to others to bring some fresh Christmas cheer into the holidays. “We buy all the gifts,” Rita explains, “which total $5 to $8 each.” Each student can pick five gifts for their family members. Whether a child is looking for a present for their brother, sister, grandpa, or mother, they are sure to find it in the Santa Shop. The Santa Shop will open its doors on December 9th. Approximately 25 volunteers from Heritage Club go down to St. Francis to pair up with the students to help them select the gifts of their choosing. Rita explains that various tables display gifts for boys, girls, and also household items. Items are put in bags and taken out the door. It is a touching experience for all who are involved. The students get there as early as 8am in eager anticipation for the doors to open. The doors generally close by noon. “Most of them are so excited,” Rita shares. “Not only do the children benefit,” she adds, “but it is an amazing experience to go down too.” To see the children smile from ear to ear and see how much the Santa Shop means to them is simply beyond words. Since the children at St. Francis can’t afford gifts, the gifts that they receive really save the season for them and gives new meaning to Christmas. What’s even better is the joy that the children receive when they give the gifts to their family members. It’s amazing to see that a $5 gift can touch so many people. Maybe that’s why they say it is more blessed to give than to receive. If you would like to make a difference for a child in need at St. Francis School, Rita and other volunteers in Heritage Club are looking for more volunteers. They are specifically looking for men to pair up with the students in selecting their gifts at the Santa Shop as Santa’s helpers. Also, you are more than welcome to donate new gifts (valued at $5 to $8) for this important cause. For more information, contact Rita Keim (ritakeim@cinci.rr.com or 754-0171) or Joan Campbell (jcampbell23@cinci.rr.com). They would love for you to make a difference for the children at St. Francis School!

She likes to eat at The Cheesecake Factory, listen to Taylor Swift, and hang out with her friends. But there’s one thing that sets her apart from others her age – her skill in gymnastics. twists are lots of fun to do. It is also a blast to jump for joy with your friends. a lot of friends there. Piper also likes gymnastics because it has increased her strength, which proves necessary when you master advanced moves. Not to mention that it is also excellent exercise. Because of dedication and discipline, Piper is proving herself to be a natural in the sport. She works on tumbling, bars, beam, and vault for a total of 17 hours a week! And when you’re only eight, that speaks volumes about how devoted you are to the sport. Piper is able to a standing tuck, which might be one her favorite moves so far. But among beam, floor, bars, and vault, Piper likes all of them equally. There’s always something fun to do on each rotation, whether that is working on front handsprings on vault, advanced moves on bars, and just working on tumbling passes on the floor. Fortunately, it is not all hard work. Piper also has a lot of fun in the process. She takes lessons at Perfection Gymnastics School in West Chester and has found Piper’s big sister Eavan also helps Piper perfect her skills in gymnastics. It is always great to have a sister to look up to and follow in her footsteps. On the Reed family’s In case you didn’t know, the Reed family has been living in Heritage Club for eight years now. There’s always someone in the neighborhood to play with which makes it an excellent place to raise a family. With the pool and club, there are a lot of options too. That’s why the club is like a second home to the Reed family. The people there are so friendly and make you feel welcome. Spring Break trip to the Cayman Islands, Eavan taught Piper to do a round off, back handspring, back tuck combination on the beach. They were quite a sight and actually had a number of people watching Piper do her flips. How fun is that! Another thing that Piper likes to do is go to Kings Island. With so many rides and attractions there is always something fun to do at this amusement park. The Reed family likes to go there at least once during the summer months before Piper has to go back to school. In Piper’s spare time, she likes to jump on her trampoline in the backyard. • 15. 28 NeighborhoodNews Heritage Homefront November Review restaurant Written by Elizabeth McCabe Photos by RJ Rice Photography We Enjoyed Hearty Italian Favorites at Maggiano’s Little Italy! Everyone enjoys hearty Italian favorites that warm the soul. Heritage Club residents are no exception. On September 10th, residents pleased their palates with a three-course offering at Maggiano’s Little Italy. Located on 7875 Montgomery Road, the culinary staff did an amazing job at wowing everyone’s taste buds. From the moment we strolled into the restaurant, the scents of Italian cooking wafted through the atmosphere. One guest noted that it “smelled wonderful” and it certainly did. We felt welcome in its “warm” and “inviting” atmosphere as we took our seats. The white tablecloths only enhanced our experience and increased our expectations for the evening. What was on the menu? The night began with an Italian Tossed Salad complemented by freshly baked bread. We also enjoyed a scrumptious “zucchini appetizer” (formally known as the Crispy Zucchini Fritte) that was definitely worth every bite. There’s nothing better than dunking your fried zucchini in the marinara sauce and appreciating the crunch of this appetizer. For some, this was the highlight of the night. Then there were the Stuffed Mushrooms (stuffed with spinach and topped with breadcrumbs) and served in a garlic white wine sauce. These delicious bites of flavor were a nice way to start our night together as we engaged in small talk, while eagerly anticipating the second course. We certainly weren’t disappointed with the four selections that we were served next. We enjoyed Four-Cheese Ravioli, Parmesan Crusted Tilapia (yes, there is such an option!), and Mag- giano’s Famous Rigatoni “D.” What’s that you say? Let me decipher it for you. The Rigatoni “D” consisted of Rigatoni pasta, herb-roasted chicken, mushrooms, and caramelized onions, all tossed in a Marsala cream sauce. We also savored everyone’s favorite – the Chicken Parmesan. If anyone knows how to master the Chicken Parmesan, it is certainly the experts at Maggiano’s. With the fried chicken breasts topped with Provolone cheese and marinara sauce, it was downright delicious. Our night ended with Vera’s Lemon Cookies, for those who wanted a tasty treat to eat. And for the more adventurous, the Tiramisu. This was one dessert that was hard to pass up. It was simply something you had to taste to believe. Let’s just say it was worth the extra calories. If you didn’t get to join us, why don’t you venture out and try this gem with your family and friends? Make sure you start your night with the Crispy Zucchini Fritte. Personally, I think it’s the best item on the menu and hopefully you will too. • 16. 30 Heritage Homefront November 31 November Heritage Homefront Are You Satisfied with your Child’s Current Progress this School Year? NO? READING AT HOME Submitted by Thomas Spotts, M Ed Ohio Licensed Reading Specialist, Director...Focus13 Learning Center, LLC Frank Smith, author of the text Understanding Reading At Focus13 we emphatically endorse this philosophy in our reading program. Why? It simply works! As a parent/guardian, how can you help your child become a better reader? Let’s start with the reading material itself… It is important to have somewhat of a handle on your child’s INDEPENDENT & INSTRUCTIONAL READING LEVELS…these are approximate grade level ranges. INDEPENDENT…is just what it sounds like. They can read this material without any help, with the exception sometimes of proper nouns in the stories. INSTRUCTIONAL…is what teachers will commonly refer to as your child’s current reading level. This material will need an adult present to give some help throughout the book. NOTE—if the adult has to provide help for approximately five or more words on each page (not including irregular proper nouns) for consecutive pages, this book is probably at your child’s FRUSTRATION level. You want to avoid these at all costs! Your child’s current reading teacher should Let us Help…. “…Children learn to read & become more competent readers by READING and BEING READ TO…” be able to give you these approximate levels if you are unsure. With this in mind, try and maintain an approximate 50-50 balance each week between these two levels of materials when your child reads. We strongly recommend linking to http://www.arbookfind.com to get the most accurate level of a book — the level listed on the back of many books is either too broad a range or often inaccurate. We never go into a bookstore without our smart-phone, so we can quickly use this link to check the level of books we are considering buying. It’s a very user-friendly link! Knowing your child’s interest areas is often second nature to a parent. So by all means encourage your children to choose material they WANT to read and are motivated to do so. This IS critical for engagement purposes and even more so for reluctant or struggling readers. However, a caveat is needed here. Often, books in your child’s interest level will also be in their FRUSTRATION level and we do NOT want them reading at this level! It discourages reading. So, what’s the compromise? Allow them to get the book…since we want to encourage a lifelong love of reading…BUT YOU WILL BE THE ONE DOING ALL THE READING! For books in a child’s interest area but NOT in their current reading range, he or she needs to be the listener. Don’t discourage books with pictures, especially with students in kindergarten3rd grade. These are often more enjoyable for the child, especially Caldecott Medal books, and they offer rich context clues for the child to help decode words and increase understanding. We encourage picture books for kids in grades 4-8 who struggle with reading. The titles just are more of a challenge to find at this grade level. This should be faded after a few pages and then the child reads paragraphs and/or pages, alternating with you. It is important that you make sure the child follows your reading when it’s not their turn. Here is where having two copies of a book are beneficial. The “flow” of a story/book and the ability to understand is reduced when you have to continually help the child find their place when it’s their turn to read. If a child finds a word extremely difficult to decode… after trying a few strategies…then by all means GIVE them the word and go on. We recommend doing this almost immediately for many proper nouns that don’t lend themselves to basic decoding strategies. Next time, we’ll discuss environmental tips that help when reading at home. • 18. 34 NeighborhoodNews Heritage Homefront November FINANCIAL FITNESS Submitted by Bill Lendl, Raymond James | From the March 2010 issue of Financial Journeys newsletter Critical Choices Precede Retirement As retirement looms, crucial financial and lifestyle decisions you may have put off for years suddenly assume more importance. You no longer have decades to decide whether you’ll keep a large house with its upkeep costs, whether your current level of debt is appropriate or whether to pay off your mortgage. Before you actually hang up your career, it’s time to do some real planning. You might begin with lifestyle decisions, although these, to a large extent, depend on the financial foundation you’ve built. While these are personal decisions, successful retirements share at least one common element – they are rooted in reality, not fantasy. Consider some possibilities. Will you plan to relocate? Or do developing family or financial considerations make that idea less attractive? Do you need to maintain and insure more than one vehicle? Do you expect to travel extensively in your early years of retirement, when you may be healthier and more likely to accept the rigors of travel? Finally, can your lifestyle plans be supported by your portfolio? If not, now is the time to make adjustments rather than later. Anecdotal evidence shows that retirees who scale back their expectations are far happier in retirement than those who wake up already retired and find they can’t really do all that they had planned. Retirement Bottom Line You’ve been marshaling your finances for years, and while you may have had intermediate goals, funding a pleasing retirement lifestyle has probably been a long-term objective. As you near your last day on the job, it’s time to make adjustments. First, you may want to realign your portfolio’s asset allocation, especially if you’ve been an aggressive investor with a high tolerance for risk. In retirement, your time horizon is shorter, recovering from major market downturns is more difficult – and you’ll probably want a regular income stream to pay your bills. Your retirement could be lengthy, so if your wealth is sufficient, you may consider dividing your portfolio into two parts. One would be devoted to producing a regular income while the other would be allocated for growth. Ideally, this part of your portfolio would help you overcome the effects of inflation, which, historically, at least, has moved along at approximately 3.1% per year. As you calculate how much you’ll need, keep in mind that retirement specialists suggest drawing down no more than 4% or 5% of your portfolio each year, to give it the best chance of supporting a long retirement. Contrary to popular belief, Spring is not the best time to list your home for sale. The best time is November, December and January, which most people think is the worst time. It comes down to supply and demand. Most sellers assume buyers aren’t seriously looking during this prolonged holiday season. And yet, many buyers are looking at properties in person and online right up until Christmas Eve. If the right home goes on the market in mid-December, a serious buyer — and there will be a lot of them — will take note. And once the New Year starts, buyers who have resolved to buy a house will start looking. If your house is one of just a few on the market, it will get the first look. The idea of spring being the best time to sell grew out of families’ desire to move before the new school year starts in September. But the majority of buyers today don’t have children. Call today for a FREE market analysis of your home. Sandra Peters | 513-300-2518 speters@comey.com | sandrapetershomes.com 37
  • 20. 38 NeighborhoodNews Heritage Homefront November November Heritage Homefront NeighborhoodNews 39 Pinball Wizard in Heritage Club In the October issue, the Business Beat article featured Ellen Knotts and her business VPCabs. A photo of Ellen Knotts and Susan Brewer may of suggested that Susan Brewer was affiliated with VPCabs. We would like to clarify that Susan Brewer is not a part of VPCabs. Name: Ellen van den Berg - Knott Position: Co-Founder Company name: VPCabs, Inc. Website: www.VPCABS.com Phone: 513-288-6590 Business Address: Cincinnati, Ohio Industry: Gaming In our last issue we featured Ellen Knott’ s new company VPCabs. The “VP” in VPCabs stands for Virtual Pinball and “Cabs” stands for cabinets. A virtual pinball cabinet is essentially a high tech pinball machine. We are very pleased to re-run this article with an important update: Ellen’s pinball machines have been given the prestigious honor of being displayed at the World Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas Nevada. Beginning in November 2013, a VPCabs Vir- tual Pinball Machine will be on display for the millions that visit the museum every year…. Congrats to Ellen and her partner! If you missed last months story, Traditional pinball machines are mechanical in nature and only offer a single playing field. A VPCabs pinball machine features a high resolution LED monitor mounted in a modern pinball cabinet that renders every pinball playing field ever made… You can actually have over 200 pinball games on a single machine. Ellen Co-Founded the company this past year as a result of discussion with a family friend that inspired the idea. The company originally introduced the VP2000 model and 5 original artwork graphic packages. The cabinets are manufactured right here in Cincinnati Ohio. The machines have been featured at various shows around the country and most recently at COMIC CON in San Diego where the machine received a sensational review. Gamers, adults, and kids love the unit. An internal Windows 7 computer powers the high definition playing field. The deep audio comes from the built-in speakers sub woofer. All the pinball games have been reduced to software and they are stored on a solid-state hard drive. The player simply selects a game table to play and the field is rendered for play in about 3 seconds. Machines are now being sold from coast to coast and even in Canada via the company website, VPCabs.com. As a natural expansion, VPCabs has introduced a Classic Arcade game cabinet that features 60 of the greatest arcade games made. The company has also just introduced its compact pinball cabinet called the mini. Ellen has been a living in the estates portion of Heritage Club for 7 years and has 5 kids ranging from 7 to 16 years of age. Her husband Richard co-owns a software company in Cincinnati and together they stay quite busy. Ellen is a native of the Netherlands and has dual citizenship from the US and Holland. She has an accounting and business degree. As busy as the Knott’s are, Ellen finds time to volunteer with another start-up here in Cincinnati called Mentor Me. This is a non-profit organization that focuses on helping young adults transition from the Ohio Foster Care system to independent living. This has also led the Knott’s to seek their Foster Care certification from the state and they are seeking to foster/ adopt in the future. If you have a family room, game room, or finished basement, then you should also have a VPCabs pinball or arcade machine! Just visit the website www.VPCabs.com and checkout the product line. The games make a great addition to a home theater too! Christmas orders are being taken now and there is a great deal on a pinball/arcade bundle! VPCabs also makes custom corporate machines too; complete with custom graphics to include the corporate logo and colors! The site features a contact form that you can use to ask questions about the products and sales.

MENTION THIS AD FOR A $100.00 GIFT CERTIFICATE! Fat transfer, or fat injection, is a cosmetic surgery procedure which can soften or eliminate the appearance of wrinkles and folds in the face. During the procedure, fat is removed from another area of the body like the abdomen and is then reinjected into the skin beneath the fold where it acts as a skin volume filler. The result is a much more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. Fat transfer may also be used to add volume to the lips. The results of fat transfer are somewhat variable but up to 70% of the volume is virtually permanent! This provides a far better value than synthetic fillers, which must typically be re-injected at least once per year to maintain the effect. resident business guide These are residents within your neighborhood who own businesses.
