The institute:
•Icai was established in July 1949 under the
chartered accountants act 1949(act
no.xxxv111 of 1949) enacted by the
parliament.
•The institute is governed by a council.
•The council consists of 40 members
•32 members are selected from among the
members and the remaining 8members are
selected by the government of India.

•The headquarters is located in new Delhi.
•Icai has 116 branches all over India.
•Icai has branches overseas which includes
the following countries: Abu
Dhabi,bahrain,bostwana,doha,dubai,indones
ia,jeddah,kuwait,london,melbourne,nigeria,

1. c.a ved jain-president
# CA.VED JAIN, FCA, New Delhi, aged 54
years is the president of icai.
# he is a rank holder in both CA Inter and
CA Final.
# A Triple Bachelors Degree Holder, he
has done his Bachelors of Science from Punjab
University in 1973.
# A Fellow Member of ICAI with more than
three decades of standing, CA. Ved Jain was
elected to the Central Council of ICAI for the
first time in 2004 and thereafter in 2007.

2.Uttam Prakash Agarwal
# Uttam Prakash Agarwal has been
elected as the Vice President of the Institute
of Chartered Accountants of India .
# He joined the Council in 2004 and
has held Chairmanship of Committee for
Members in Industry.
# He is also holding the Vice Chair of
Diamond Jubilee and Perspective Planning
Committee(s), the newly constituted
committee’s of icai and the international
Affairs committee.
# He is also Vice Chairman of ICAI
Accounting Research Foundation,a body
incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956
as a research WING OF ICAI.

3. Shri.t.karthikeyan-secretary
# a post Graduate in economics, made a
beginning in the Institute of Chartered
Accountants of India (ICAI) in January, 1978 as
a Research Assistant.
# The first dedicated Assistant to the
Accounting standards Board during its
formative stage(s).
# Acted as the Secretary to the Study
Team on Issues Relating to Foreign Bodies/Firms
which was, inter alia, entrusted with the task
of providing inputs, on behalf of the ICAI, to the
Government on WTO related matters, for the
first time.

Elections to the Council and the Regional
Councils including conduct and completion of
election under the Election Rules framed by
the Central Government for the first time.

Steps for becoming a
chartered accountant:

Common proficiency test:
#it is an entry level test for chartered
accountancy course.
#it has 4 subjects i.e. accounting
, mercantile law , economics and quantitative
aptitude.
#the test is of 200 marks.
#the test is divided into 2 sessions of 2
hours each.

Professional competence course:
#this is the first stage for chartered
accountancy curriculum.
#in this course the working knowledge and
allied subjects of accountancy is covered.
#knowledge of business communication
through modules of developing soft skills
, leadership , group dynamics and knowledge of
business meetings and legal documents.

Complete 100 hours of Compulsory Computer
Training before appearing for PCE.
Undergo General Management &
Communication Skills (GMCS) after 18 months
of practical training and completion of PCE
Eligible to appear for Final Examination on

Fellow member:
An associate member can apply to the council for
fellowship if he/she fulfills the following conditions:
#he/she should have been an associate member of
the institute of not less than 5 years and in continuous
practice in India as a cost accountant for at least 5
years and
#he/she should have been an associate member of
the institute for a continuous period of not less than 5
years and immediately before the date of his/her
application should have held for a continuous period
of not less than 5 years as chief cost accountant or
an equivalent appointment , by whatever name
designated ,in an organization approved for the
purpose by council

Associate member:
# a person who has passed the final
examination of the institute and who has
acquired for a period of not less than 3 years
practical training experience in any
industrial, commercial , government units.
#the experience as above stated may be
acquired prior to or after passing the final
examination or partly before and partly
after passing the said examination.
