This chapter discusses theories of motivation and leadership for managing technical people. It describes McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y, as well as content theories of motivation from Maslow, Herzberg, and McClelland that identify different human needs. Process theories of motivation discussed include equity theory, expectancy theory, and behavior modification. The chapter also addresses the nature of leadership, traits of effective leaders, and differences among technical professionals.
