Trip to Museum of Anthropology
University of British Columbia
In March, 2007, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to
visit University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology.
Our class was given a small task booklet to complete and it was
up to us to browse through the museum in search for answers.
I must say that it was difficult at first because I was not
familiar with the different types of art that were displayed. But
participating in this activity allowed me to be in the shoe of my
future students and with this experience, I can make their
museum visits education and fun!
The museum is a wonderful place to learn about First
Nations art and the different styles that each band adheres to. At
the time, there happened to be a group of children at the museum
for a fieldtrip, watching them sitting quietly and sketching their
favourite totem pole. Ideas popped into my head as to how I
could integrate different subjects with a museum tour.
The possibilities are endless! And as teachers, we simply
must keep learning!
