  3. ABSTRACT An integrated GPS-GSM system is proposed to track vehicles. The remote module has a GPS mounted on the moving vehicle to identify its current position, and to be transferred by GSM with other parameters acquired by the automobile’s data port as an SMS to a recipient station. Vehicle tracking and locking system is needed to be installed in the vehicle, to track the place and lock the engine motor. The goal of this system is to manage fleet, police automobiles distribution and car theft cautions.
  4. INTRODUCTION The ability to accurately detect a vehicle’s location and its status is the main goal of automobile trajectory monitoring systems. These systems are implemented using several hybrid techniques that include: • wireless Communication, • geographical positioning, • and embedded applications. Vehicle tracking systems accepted in consumer vehicles as a theft prevention and retrieval device.
  5. • The prevalence of surveillance systems for tracking and monitoring humans and vehicles using video information is expanding rapidly in recent times. • Improvements in computing power, increased safety concerns, increased global threats and a greater awareness and pursuit in developing country’s and organization's security capabilities have all contributed to this realization. •Most vehicle tracking systems can be classified into four broad categories: model based, region-based, active contour-based, or feature based tracking .
  6. • When the camera is not in motion, most of the image remains relatively static. This allows simple motion detection techniques to be used to segment vehicles from the background. • Most roads are flat; while the view field is still essentially three dimensional, motion modeling and prediction may be simplified by restricting velocity parameters to two dimensions. • While in transit, vehicles exhibit no articulated motion; this greatly simplifies shape/contour estimations and models (however, especially when intersections are considered, they can exhibit significant pose variance). This paper presents an automatic vehicle monitoring system that is capable of tracking vehicles across a surveillance network consisting of four cameras.
  7. SURVEY OF THE RELATED WORK • Many researchers have proposed the use of cutting edge technologies to serve the target of vehicle tracking. • These technologies include: Communication, GPS, GIS, Remote Control, server systems and others. The proposed GPS/GSM based System has the two parts, first is a mobile unit and another is controlling station. • A vehicle tracking system is an electronic device, installed in a vehicle to enable the owner or a third party to track the vehicle's place.
  8. SYSTEM OVERVIEW The system has two main modules. The first module is the tracking device which is attached to the moving automobile. This module composes of: A GPS receiver, Microcontroller and a GSM Modem. The GPS Receiver retrieves the location information from satellites in the form of latitude and longitude real-time readings. • The modem receives the SMS that includes GPS coordinates and engine parameters. • If any interruption occurred in any side of the door, then the IR sensor senses the signals and SMS sends to the microcontroller.
  9. Surveillance Technologies Vehicle detection and surveillance technologies may be described as containing three components: • Transducer, • Signal processing device, and • Data processing device. The transducer detects the passage or presence of a vehicle or its axles. The signal-processing device typically converts the transducer output into an electrical signal. The data-processing device usually consists of computer hardware and firmware that converts the electrical signal into traffic parameters.
  10. CONCLUSION • In this paper, we have proposed a novel method of vehicle tracking and locking systems used to track the theft vehicle by using GPS and GSM technology. This system puts into the sleeping mode vehicle handled by the owner or authorized persons; otherwise goes to active mode The system included a main components: a transmitting embedded module to interface in-vehicle GPS and GSM devices in order determine and send automobile location and status information via SMS.
