EMPATHY
 Definition
 Applications
 Becoming Empathy Oriented
 Results of Empathy
DEFINITION
 Empathy is the ability to put oneself into another person’s shoes and treat
treat people the way you would like to be treated if you were them.
 Empathy is the ability to look at oneself with another person’s eyes.
 Empathy is to hear our own words from another person’s point of view or
or “listening skills”.
 Empathy is not a skill to be used once in a while, on the contrary it must be
be an everyday habit helping one to understand others and be understood
understood by them.
APPLICATIONS
In today’s fast-paced, changing, competitive environment where many
interactions are WIN-LOSE (I win you lose or you win I lose) empathy,
impacts most relationships to become “WIN – WIN” (I win…. You win & You
win…. I win)
Empathy creates win-win relationships. With some practices in empathy,
your understanding of others becomes focused on what “they want to
hear”, your speech changes, people feel understood and are more willing to
help you succeed.
Once people feel you totally understand their feelings, attitudes, beliefs and
needs they are more willing to understand you.
EMPATHY CREATES UNDERSTANDING
While it is true that you have your own objectives to achieve in human relationships, empathy will make you understand others and thereby
it will become easier to communicate with, win friends and build a better future.
Once you use empathy in all your relationships and can honestly say to yourself that you make the necessary efforts to build relationships,
you can work on several goals everyday with a positive feeling that you have done your best and results will follow.
Empathy makes others feel good about themselves and make you feel terrific too. Feeling good about yourself breeds more expectations of
positive results giving you a boost towards success.
BECOME EMPATHY ORIENTED
Imagine that you are a video camera, a mirror and an instant playback tape recorder. Now look at yourself on the screen, in the mirror study
your own reflection, hear your speech.
 Are you who you want to be?
 Are you who you your audience want you to be?
 Are you saying the right things to get results?
 Step by step start a self-development plan; soon you will find emerging in yourself a more sensitive & caring person.
Imagine you are like other people, like your boss, your dad, your friend, your school / teacher. Study yourself from their point of view. What are
their expectations? What is the best to communicate with them? Which language, style, clothing and mannerisms should I use? Pay attention to
their point of view and objectives and then go for the results you wish to achieve by including them instead of excluding them.
In everyday human encounters:
 Imagine you are the taxi / can driver
 Imagine you are the restaurant waiter
 Imagine you are the poor lady on the roadside
What treatment would you like?
What kind words of appreciation would you like to hear?
How best would you like your own mistakes explained to you?
Understand others, empathize with them, they are not you but they are beautiful people going
through life with their own conditioning.
RESULTS OF EMPATHY
 Constant popularity: Yes, you become more popular. People like being
understood and start liking you.
 Success: People want you to succeed because you care about them.
They even go out of their way to help you.
 Long-term relationships: No one would like to lose an empathizing
friend. Build relationships that last and cause your own growth in life.
QUESTIONS
1. What is empathy? How does it help?
2. List any five relationships where you need to use more empathy? State what you will
do to achieve results in each of these relationships.
3. List any five persons in your life who are most empathy oriented towards you. State
what is it that they do for you to that makes you like them?
