All living things on Earth exist within the biosphere, which is the thin layer extending from the surface of the planet out into the atmosphere and hydrosphere where organisms can live. Within the biosphere, living things are organized into a hierarchy of levels from the smallest of molecules, cells and tissues up to whole ecosystems and the global community of life itself.
