2. Narrative
• The lyrics of the song start off with her being pushed around by her
boyfriend and always being behind him which links to what she says
in the lyrics. As the song goes on it tells us how she is being
stronger and independent. This is shown in the video by showing us
how she is now doing things alone and not relying on her boyfriend
anymore.
• The music video of Katy Perry's song roar copies the ‘Jungle Book’
look, by the comic effect it has at the beginning and end. It is also
shown as a old cinema type. This links to the song because the song
is about being on top of the jungle.
• She also uses Muhammad Ali’s quote in the song. Whilst also
mentioning she conquered the jungle.
• The music video symbolises power.
3. Camera
• The camera moves a lot in the music video showing different angles
and shots which show us audiences how the jungle feels.
• At the beginning the camera is looking down at Katy Perry to show
how low she was and how she was a nobody. As the music videos
goes on the camera starts to look up at Katy to show us how she
has changed and become a stronger person.
• The choice of different camera angles and shots show the bravery
feeling she has.
• The camera looks like it is flying above her in the music video to
show that she is still a simple person, which helps relate to the
audience.
• The lyrics say, ‘I’ve got the eye of a tiger’ when this is said a point of
view shot from the tiger's eye is used, like shown in the picture
above.
4. Camera
• A lot of close ups are used in the music video which show us that
she is looking at the camera like she is talking to the audience to try
create a connection and tell the audience she is like them.
• Whilst the close ups are used and she is creating the connection she
is also flirting as she starts moving towards the tree.
• A lot of pans are used, however they mainly pan around her which
shows us that she is the centre of attention.
• Throughout the whole music video the main camera angles used
are high shots at the beginning, then in the middle eye line shots
are used, then towards the end low shots are used. This helps also
show how she has gotten stronger as a person.
5. Editing
• The lights get brighter throughout the music video to show hope
and her getting herself together.
• She starts to get rid of her own things, this shows how she doesn’t
want anything to do with the past and how she wants to move on
forward and start fresh.
• Most time when Katy is looking at the camera she is lip synching.
• Throughout the music video the main edits that are used are the
jump cuts, wipe and fades.
• The music video starts off slow with the beat, as the beat speeds up
it has faster cuts.
• When coming to the chorus the camera fast pans and cuts.
• There is a clear sequence to the music video which shows the
beginning and ending.
6. Star Image/Performance
• Katy is playing a part of her being more independent with herself
and showing us through the video how she becomes that way.
• The music video shows us how she is becoming friends with the
animals and being independent to become a stronger person. It
shows how women can be better and at the top by themselves.
• The star is represented to show that she is a stronger person on her
own and that she can overcome anything without having to rely on
anyone or any man.
• However, she is still shown to be an object with the less clothing
she is wearing. This just shows that even though the music could
show how women are independent and also shown to be brave
they still need that power by being in less clothes.
7. Star Image/Performance
• The makeup and hair make her look flawless and
perfect so it makes people look up to her and want to
be like that and to have perfect hair and skin.
• The music video is over dramatic which links back to
the old fashioned films.
• The whole music video is her story, of how she has
gotten stronger and independent and not needing to
have a boyfriend for her to be someone, so because of
this she is showing people her story and giving them a
message through it so that it can help other women.
