Data has been described as the new oil due to its potential to generate valuable insights and knowledge through analysis. While data analysis has a long history, the volume, variety, and velocity of big data makes it difficult to process and derive conclusions from. Data science is emerging as a new field that combines computer science, statistics, machine learning, and human-computer interaction to collect, clean, integrate, analyze and visualize big data with the ultimate goals of creating new data products and services and training data scientists. The talk will introduce data science and big data technologies, illustrate opportunities and risks through examples, and discuss challenges of combining high-performance computing and big data analytics.
