Editor's Notes
Goal of Slide:
Explain how uncertain economic times often push buyers into conservative purchasing habits.
Key Messages:
As budgets are flattened or reduced, NetApp Storage Efficiency rises in importance because:
Less money is required for storage acquisition
Less money is required for storage management and infrastructure
Storage and data center expansion costs can be delayed or eliminated
The graphic illustrates that storage capacity growth has been out pacing “traditional” budget constraints and advancement in management tools.
The bullets are self-explanatory and illustrate the challenges in the typical environment.
Use this slide as an opportunity to engage customers and uncover their key issues, e.g., “Does this sound familiar? Which of the issues listed here are most problematic for you?”

Simplification has been a journey out of business necessity for many companies….Starting from a complex environment with islands of computing and information. When business processes were more departmental and simpler is nature, dedicated computing resources while inefficient were the norm. As business processes have become more complex and integrated with greater need to share information, IT infrastructure has needed to simplify to support the level of information sharing, business flexibility.
It started with consolidation to get to fewer physical devices with immediate TCO benefits
From physical consolidation, the next step would be logical simplification through virtualized resources that reside in a highly condensed infrastructure. The end game is to create virtualized pools of resources that can be rapidly provisioned and managed based on pre-defined policies.
So, page 26, we switch now to talk about what offerings we have and how these offerings are organized. We have seven key areas of offerings. We have disk systems, tape systems and storage networking which includes the hardware side of things. We have infrastructure management, business continuity and lifecycle and retention which focus on our software and bundled hardware and software offerings. And then finally we have services which covers all of the things from consulting all the way down to hosting. I’ll cover each of these in detail in the next seven charts.
Page 27 we talk about our disk systems. We have three different, unique disk systems in our disk systems category. The SAN Volume controller is a network-based storage virtualization that presents itself as a disk system to a variety of Windows, Linux and UNIX hosts, but actually is virtualizing the backend storage of IBM and non-IBM resources. Our DS family, as you can see here down below, has a variety of storage tiers available from the lowest DS300 all the way to the largest DS8000 Turbo model. This allows you to pick and choose the right storage for you and we offer advanced copy services such as FlashCopy, Metro Mirror and Global Mirror. Our N series, which is our OEM agreement with NetApp, offers disk systems that provide universal, unified storage intermixing fiber channel protocol, I SCSI and NAS file level protocols in either the appliance or Gateway models. Along with copy services such as our Snap-Lock and Snap-Restore.
Tiered storage enables customers to accommodate drive price points best suited to the type of data being stored
Primary storage on high performance FC/SAS drives
Secondary storage on high-capacity SATA
