• Karen Y. Holmes has been an assistant professor of psychology at Norfolk State
University since 2006. Her professional interests are varied and include,
examining the mental health consequences of the “Strong Black Woman,” the
role of gender and ethnicity on justice attitudes, and racism, coping and health
outcomes in African Americans. However, Dr. Holmes is most passionate about
her work in psychology pedagogy, specifically best practices in teaching
• Since beginning service to NSU, Dr. Holmes has written several manuscripts
and has presented at numerous local, regional and national conferences with
NSU students as coauthors/co presenters. Dr. Holmes’ Honors include a 2009
Instructional Research Award from the Society for the Teaching of Psychology
(APA Division 2) and she serves as a Norfolk State University Faculty Senior
Fellow to the Honors College. Dr. Holmes is fascinated by the research process
and is always eager to mentor students.

Mr. Keenan Ruff, a 2009 Bachelor of Arts in English graduate, is currently attending
law school at Louisiana State University. During Mr. Ruff’s tenure at NSU, he was a
member of the NSU tennis team, an Honors College Presidential Scholar, and an
ENFL Writing Center tutor.
Ms. Kimberly Jones, a 2009 Bachelor of Arts in English graduate, is currently Chair of
the Department of English at Churchland Middle School in Portsmouth,
Virginia. During Ms. Jones’s tenure at NSU, she served as President of the English
Majors’ Association, a member of the NSU Players, a member of the Spanish Club,
and the ENFL Student Representative on the College of Liberal Arts Student
Real Internship Experience = Social Responsibility
Ms. Olivia Cheatham, who plans to graduate in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in
English/Spanish Literature concentration degree, served with distinction as the first
student to enroll in an ENFL Internship class. Approved in fall 2009, the ENFL Internship
classes were first offered during the spring 2010 semester. Ms. Cheatham accepted an
internship with the New Hope Christian Day Care and Pre-School program at New Hope Church
of God in Christ Church in Norfolk, Virginia. Ms. Cheatham founded and organized New Hope’s
Spanish Program and taught elementary Spanish to New Hope’s pre-school students. New
Hope’s pastor, Dr. Calvin A. Durham, and New Hope’s Christian Day Care Operations Manager,
Elder Ronald Lee Teague, were so impressed with Ms. Cheatham’s work and work ethic, that
they designated a specific classroom just for Ms. Cheatham’s Spanish classes and she was given
complete reign to design the curriculum and teaching instruments. Ms. Cheatham also
organized an end-of-the-school-year program so that the children could proudly show their
parents the Spanish skills learned in the classes.
Student Stars Shining Bright
Recently, Garyn Clark, Miss NSU, competed in the Miss
Virginia pageant. She won the Coletta Schrier/Betty Jo
Pastel Non-Finalist Talent Award along with the 2010 Miss
America Organization State Academic Scholarship of
$1,000. Clark has received rave reviews from viewers of the
Miss Virginia Organization State Academic Scholarship of
$1,000. Clark has received rave reviews from viewers of the
Miss Virginia pageant.
Clark, a 2010 NSU graduate, studied music education and
she plans to become an elementary school music educator
and ultimately a public school administrator. During her reign
as Miss NSU, she partnered with SGA to organize a Haiti
Relief Effort Week on campus. She was also a member of
the NSU Concert Choir, the SGA, and was involved with the
New Pleasant Valley Baptist Church Youth Ministry.

Spartan “Legion” Marching Band
In the world of collegiate marching bands, the
award winning Norfolk State University,
located in Norfolk, VA, Spartan “Legion”
Marching band has made a name for itself as
one of the premier Marching Bands in the
country. The “Legion” consists of over 250
student musicians, dancers, and flaggers from
states nationwide, the Virgin Islands and the
Bahamas. The “Legion” also has a “Dream
Team” staff that aids in the growth and
development of the band. The “Legion”

Dr. Leroy Hamilton, a 1996 Bachelor of Arts in English graduate,
is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of English
and Foreign Languages and the Executive Director of NSU’s
Office of First Year Experience/ACCESS. Under his tutelage, the
Office of First Year Experience/ACCESS was recognized in The
Chronicle of Higher Education as one of the most outstanding
programs in the nation that aid freshmen students in their
transition from high school to college, thereby, aiding in the
increase of the retention of those students.
Prof. Borbie L. Davis, a 1982 Bachelor of Arts in English Education
graduate, has been an Adjunct Professor in ENFL since 1998. A
former Chair of the Departments of English at Azalea Gardens
Middle School and Booker T. Washington High School, Mr. Davis is
currently an Advanced Placement English Teacher at Indian River
High School and is nationally recognized as an outstanding grader
of Advanced Placement Examinations for the National
Educational Testing Service.
