OPPORTUNITY
Our work relates closely to the needs and aspirations of our client. These are explored
by listening, talking and then tailoring our advice / designs accordingly. eCubed
provide;
− A unique and innovative working environment,
− flexible and productive space solutions
− Characterful design solutions which reflect the aesthetic of the environment
and the excitement of its users
− Associated and controllable inside/outside space and public realm which is
suited to the clients expectations
− Going the extra mile - a state-of-the-art options and cost effective solutions
eCubed’s people, culture and high- end design skills in projects of this type make us
ideally suited to this particular project. Our principal staff are all hands-on and delegation
down a long chain of command is specifically avoided.
We aim to work on a small number of significant and interesting projects rather than a catch-all market approach. We currently have 30 technical staff across the range of specialist
lighting and building services disciplines and in our Auckland and Wellington.
We have worked on a wide range of projects many of which have been hotels. Over the past few years we have concentrated on our delivery skills particularly in the development of
documentation including 3D Revit and BIM modelling. eCubed develop close working team relationships with contractors and specialist sub-contractors on site to realize highly
developed solutions such as projects like the Viaduct Events Centre on very tight budget and timescales and with excellent design outcomes. We recognise that design is only half
the story. As a practice we have delivered more Green Star buildings designs of any consultant in New Zealand for which we are proud. This includes the only two current 6 Star
buildings in New Zealand. However we have realised that this level of sustainability is not enough and have recently become involved in 2 N° Living Building Challenge Buildings
(Livestock Improvement Corporation and Glen Innes Music and Drama Centre) as part of our continually developing ‘True Green’ service delivery model.
We aim to provide a thoughtful, practical, challenging and personal approach to our designs and management of your project. We view design as an active process of collaboration,
rather than as a passive giving of advice. We are interested in all aspects of outcomes of the design, not just those we are appointed for.

INTEGRATED SUSTAINABLE DESIGN (ISD)
We have established a good reputation for progressive and innovative cost-effective sustainable
building design solutions, based on the people we have, their experience and the work they produce.
We don’t, however, believe in innovation for innovation’s sake, but more as means for solving the
needs of the client and their project in the most effective way.
Sustainable design requires a much more holistic and interactive design approach which involves all
the design team members and client stakeholders. It needs a systems approach - that is an approach
that considers how multiple complex issues and different values, including people and environment are
closely & dynamically intertwined. By being inclusive & understanding, we identify and then join all the
dots to capture the opportunities offered by this project to provide real sustainable outcomes. Adopting
an Integrated Sustainable Design Process (ISD) has significant advantages for integrating a high level
of sustainability into a project. In effect sustainability is woven into the DNA of the project with input and
buy–in from all stakeholders.
Design opportunities will be explored and developed jointly during the various design stages. The
design process recognises the interconnectedness of the various design disciplines which will help to
integrate the architecture and ancillary disciplines as the design develops. Integrated Sustainable
Design (ISD) that ensures excellent collaboration to identify and solve the sustainability question. The
key tenants are the 3 E’s; ‘Everything, Everyone, and Early’ on and around the table.
ISD is an inclusive process of a series of expertly facilitated design workshops for the design team, the
client and key stakeholders. This first critical session brings all players together to a shared
understanding of sustainability, and ensures they are briefed on key project inputs and requirements.
The facilitator and team capture the shared and agreed project vision and then create a route map of
how to deliver it. A series of further detailed workshops during the various design stages consider key
areas in more detail, such as building envelope design & comfort, landscape & water systems, energy
use & generation, maximising ecological value, materials & maintenance etc in order to find the optimal
solution that delivers the vision, in balance with budget and other key project constraints.

QUALITY ASSURANCE & CONTROL
Our quality assurance and control system has been purpose designed as an
effective operational management system suited to a relatively small company
which prides itself on ensuring the requirements of our clients are met in a cost
effective, technically suitable and timely manner.
Our prime objective, which relates to our structure, is for projects to be staffed
only by quality staff with a high level of technical skill, experience and
management ability.
David Fullbrook is the eCubed Director responsible for quality assurance and
there is a commitment by all of our staff that adherence to our Company’s
systems and procedures are everyone’s concern. David regularly carries out
independent peer reviews of other consultant’s projects throughout New Zealand
on behalf of projects and is respected for his wide ranging but always constructive
criticism.
Our two quality procedures cover “Project Control” and “Support Services”.
Project Control Procedures cover our core business activity of providing
engineering services to clients. Support Services Procedures cover the
management and control of office functions and systems including project
numbers; distribution filing and archiving; resource and reference documentation
and equipment, software and systems.
A key aspect of our in-house quality control procedure is to carry out multi-
discipline in-house technical reviews at the completion of the preliminary,
developed and detailed design stages where each discipline presents their
proposals to their in house peers in a design charette/workshop environment. In
this way we ensure that coordination and interfaces between disciplines are
addressed and that all the firms’ technical resources are brought to bear in a
concentrated manner at key stages of the project. In-house reports on these
reviews can be issued to the project manager if required

and yet still creating an amazing building. A very
complex design created entirely in REVIT 3D allows
eCubed to fully coordinate all aspects of the services.
The new, international-standard centre for performing
arts will be integrated with the new ASB head office
complex and become the permanent home of
Auckland Theatre Company (ATC). The centre will
include a 600-seat theatre and access to a 200-seat
auditorium within the ASB development.
eCubed change the architectural approach to the fly

GEYSER BUILDING – PARNELL AUCKLAND
eCubed Duties – Electrical, Data, Security and Specialist Lighting Completed in 2012 on
budget.
Located in Parnell in Auckland’s city fringe the Samson Corporation 6200m² commercial
community of five buildings uses twin courtyards and veils of glass to create a sense of
community and business all in one. eCubed are appointed for Electrical Building Services.
The building is the first in New Zealand to be achieve a Six Star New Zealand Green Building
Council rating and was lodged to the NZGBC in May 2009. With a fully active openable double
skin façade, no air-conditioning and minimal heating the building is an advert for current green
thinking technology. The lighting system achieves the maximum green star rating by achieving
1.39W/m² per 100lux. A first in New Zealand, 7% better than the required highest rating of
1.5w/m² and achieved over 100% of the net lettable area. The lighting solution was also the first
design to be awarded innovation points for exceeding all the green star criteria.
Not only is the lighting solution achieving exceptionally high energy efficiency figures but the
entire lighting systems is a bespoke design by eCubed which combines all electrical services
(lighting and power distribution) within one single element. In addition all other available
electrical green star points have been achieved by eCubed.
Relevant Attributes – Commercial Solution. Value driven including extensive value
management with Contractor. Working and convincing the client to go for a 6 star Green

VIADUCT EVENTS CENTRE & JELLICOE STREET
eCubed Duties – ESD Specialist, Mechanical, Electrical, Specialist Lighting and AV consultants
and Hydraulics on this prestigious project. With a capex of $26m. completed in June 2011 on
time and on budget.
Auckland’s latest waterfront building is the Viaduct Events Centre. This signature building
designed by Gordon Moller was conceived as ‘a benchmark environmentally friendly Events
Centre before it was fashionable for stadiums and event centres to be green. Given the recent
surge in interest in green buildings within the market place this standard of environmental
design has proved a key feature in attracting high quality and similarly forward thinking users.
Indeed the Viaduct Event Centre has acted as a catalyst for many other developments on the
tank farm side of the City to continue with a complementary high standard of environmental
performance. Using the ocean water for heating and cooling instead of chillers or cooling
towers is one of many first generation True Green options being used on this building.
In addition to a range of high quality sustainable design features including a high performance
facade air-conditioning the project made innovative use of benchmarking using the equivalent
Australian Green Building Council Green Event Centre design rating tool with some pragmatic
adjustments for New Zealand conditions.
The adjoining Gateway Plaza and Jellicoe Street for which we were the specialist lighting
designer and electrical engineers are fantastic open public spaces in the area just beyond the
VEC where the Wynyard Crossing interim bridge links the Viaduct Harbour with Wynyard
Quarter, Jellicoe Street, North Wharf promenade and the Viaduct Events Centre. Gateway
Plaza.
Relevant Attributes – Waterfront building and public realm, seawater cooling and heating, highly

OPEX AND WHOLE OF LIFE COSTING
A central philosophy of sustainable design is its value case. Not only what it will cost
to build but what it will cost to run and maintain. The balance between first costs and
whole life costs becomes particularly important as the intensity of servicing
increases.
eCubed have a particular reputation for whole of life costing having carried out a
large number of value case studies and sustainability audits for Central Government,
Local Government the New Zealand Green Building Council and private clients. We
do this in a number of ways:
- Understanding the day-to-day operation of the building, particularly
equipment such as the building services and the façade .
- Energy and water modelling.
- Benchmarking of existing energy and water use.
- Benchmarking against other facilities.
- Exploring energy and water saving design opportunities and scenarios with
relative values.
- Review of differing energy and water efficiencies of different items of plant
equipment and appliances.
- Selecting, designing and specifying durable, reliable and robust engineering
systems – a loose fit, low energy long life philosophy.

  • 3. eCUBED LIGHT eCUBED LIGHT 2013 c.doc eCUBED LIGHT OPPORTUNITY Our work relates closely to the needs and aspirations of our client. These are explored by listening, talking and then tailoring our advice / designs accordingly. eCubed provide; − A unique and innovative working environment, − flexible and productive space solutions − Characterful design solutions which reflect the aesthetic of the environment and the excitement of its users − Associated and controllable inside/outside space and public realm which is suited to the clients expectations − Going the extra mile - a state-of-the-art options and cost effective solutions eCubed’s people, culture and high- end design skills in projects of this type make us ideally suited to this particular project. Our principal staff are all hands-on and delegation down a long chain of command is specifically avoided. We aim to work on a small number of significant and interesting projects rather than a catch-all market approach. We currently have 30 technical staff across the range of specialist lighting and building services disciplines and in our Auckland and Wellington. We have worked on a wide range of projects many of which have been hotels. Over the past few years we have concentrated on our delivery skills particularly in the development of documentation including 3D Revit and BIM modelling. eCubed develop close working team relationships with contractors and specialist sub-contractors on site to realize highly developed solutions such as projects like the Viaduct Events Centre on very tight budget and timescales and with excellent design outcomes. We recognise that design is only half the story. As a practice we have delivered more Green Star buildings designs of any consultant in New Zealand for which we are proud. This includes the only two current 6 Star buildings in New Zealand. However we have realised that this level of sustainability is not enough and have recently become involved in 2 N° Living Building Challenge Buildings (Livestock Improvement Corporation and Glen Innes Music and Drama Centre) as part of our continually developing ‘True Green’ service delivery model. We aim to provide a thoughtful, practical, challenging and personal approach to our designs and management of your project. We view design as an active process of collaboration, rather than as a passive giving of advice. We are interested in all aspects of outcomes of the design, not just those we are appointed for. eCubed specialist designs dedicated to helping reshape the New Zealand environment.
  • 4. eCUBED LIGHT eCUBED LIGHT 2013 c.doc eCUBED LIGHT INTEGRATED SUSTAINABLE DESIGN (ISD) We have established a good reputation for progressive and innovative cost-effective sustainable building design solutions, based on the people we have, their experience and the work they produce. We don’t, however, believe in innovation for innovation’s sake, but more as means for solving the needs of the client and their project in the most effective way. Sustainable design requires a much more holistic and interactive design approach which involves all the design team members and client stakeholders. It needs a systems approach - that is an approach that considers how multiple complex issues and different values, including people and environment are closely & dynamically intertwined. By being inclusive & understanding, we identify and then join all the dots to capture the opportunities offered by this project to provide real sustainable outcomes. Adopting an Integrated Sustainable Design Process (ISD) has significant advantages for integrating a high level of sustainability into a project. In effect sustainability is woven into the DNA of the project with input and buy–in from all stakeholders. Design opportunities will be explored and developed jointly during the various design stages. The design process recognises the interconnectedness of the various design disciplines which will help to integrate the architecture and ancillary disciplines as the design develops. Integrated Sustainable Design (ISD) that ensures excellent collaboration to identify and solve the sustainability question. The key tenants are the 3 E’s; ‘Everything, Everyone, and Early’ on and around the table. ISD is an inclusive process of a series of expertly facilitated design workshops for the design team, the client and key stakeholders. This first critical session brings all players together to a shared understanding of sustainability, and ensures they are briefed on key project inputs and requirements. The facilitator and team capture the shared and agreed project vision and then create a route map of how to deliver it. A series of further detailed workshops during the various design stages consider key areas in more detail, such as building envelope design & comfort, landscape & water systems, energy use & generation, maximising ecological value, materials & maintenance etc in order to find the optimal solution that delivers the vision, in balance with budget and other key project constraints.

A unique feature of the eCubed team is that experienced practitioners are provided in all the key disciplines so that an integrated and holistic view can be taken for the benefit of the project. We aim to develop and maintain a high standard of environmental awareness and to continuously improve our environmental performance in our own activities and on our projects for clients wherever we have control or influence. We believe the successful delivery of the project will rely on the ability of the project team to communicate effectively and to work well within a ‘team’ environment. • 6. eCUBED LIGHT eCUBED LIGHT 2013 c.doc eCUBED LIGHT QUALITY ASSURANCE & CONTROL Our quality assurance and control system has been purpose designed as an effective operational management system suited to a relatively small company which prides itself on ensuring the requirements of our clients are met in a cost effective, technically suitable and timely manner. Our prime objective, which relates to our structure, is for projects to be staffed only by quality staff with a high level of technical skill, experience and management ability. David Fullbrook is the eCubed Director responsible for quality assurance and there is a commitment by all of our staff that adherence to our Company’s systems and procedures are everyone’s concern. David regularly carries out independent peer reviews of other consultant’s projects throughout New Zealand on behalf of projects and is respected for his wide ranging but always constructive criticism. Our two quality procedures cover “Project Control” and “Support Services”. Project Control Procedures cover our core business activity of providing engineering services to clients. Support Services Procedures cover the management and control of office functions and systems including project numbers; distribution filing and archiving; resource and reference documentation and equipment, software and systems. A key aspect of our in-house quality control procedure is to carry out multi- discipline in-house technical reviews at the completion of the preliminary, developed and detailed design stages where each discipline presents their proposals to their in house peers in a design charette/workshop environment. In this way we ensure that coordination and interfaces between disciplines are addressed and that all the firms’ technical resources are brought to bear in a concentrated manner at key stages of the project. In-house reports on these reviews can be issued to the project manager if required

With a capex of $26m. completed in June 2011 on time and on budget. Auckland’s latest waterfront building is the Viaduct Events Centre. This signature building designed by Gordon Moller was conceived as ‘a benchmark environmentally friendly Events Centre before it was fashionable for stadiums and event centres to be green. Given the recent surge in interest in green buildings within the market place this standard of environmental design has proved a key feature in attracting high quality and similarly forward thinking users. Indeed the Viaduct Event Centre has acted as a catalyst for many other developments on the tank farm side of the City to continue with a complementary high standard of environmental performance. Using the ocean water for heating and cooling instead of chillers or cooling towers is one of many first generation True Green options being used on this building. In addition to a range of high quality sustainable design features including a high performance facade air-conditioning the project made innovative use of benchmarking using the equivalent Australian Green Building Council Green Event Centre design rating tool with some pragmatic adjustments for New Zealand conditions. The adjoining Gateway Plaza and Jellicoe Street for which we were the specialist lighting designer and electrical engineers are fantastic open public spaces in the area just beyond the VEC where the Wynyard Crossing interim bridge links the Viaduct Harbour with Wynyard Quarter, Jellicoe Street, North Wharf promenade and the Viaduct Events Centre. Gateway Plaza. Relevant Attributes – Waterfront building and public realm, seawater cooling and heating, highly coordinated and exposed services with industrial aesthetic, Innovative and cost effective air sculpting by Big Ass fans and fast track tight budgets, state of the art lighting solutions. • 26. eCUBED LIGHT eCUBED LIGHT 2013 c.doc eCUBED LIGHT OPEX AND WHOLE OF LIFE COSTING A central philosophy of sustainable design is its value case. Not only what it will cost to build but what it will cost to run and maintain. The balance between first costs and whole life costs becomes particularly important as the intensity of servicing increases. eCubed have a particular reputation for whole of life costing having carried out a large number of value case studies and sustainability audits for Central Government, Local Government the New Zealand Green Building Council and private clients. We do this in a number of ways: - Understanding the day-to-day operation of the building, particularly equipment such as the building services and the façade . - Energy and water modelling. - Benchmarking of existing energy and water use. - Benchmarking against other facilities. - Exploring energy and water saving design opportunities and scenarios with relative values. - Review of differing energy and water efficiencies of different items of plant equipment and appliances. - Selecting, designing and specifying durable, reliable and robust engineering systems – a loose fit, low energy long life philosophy.
