3. Who are we?
Based in Nottinghamshire, DAS was
created over a decade ago by our
Managing Director Andy Bell and
since then has carved its own place in
the technology landscape by making
the complex incredibly simple.
We began life focused on the TV
industry and played a key role in
turning the UK digital, but now, with
an installation infrastructure that spans
the entire British Isles, we reach
across the whole technology gambit
from Solar PV, CCTV, Sky TV, Custom
Install and renewable energy which
this brochure focuses on.
Our domestic and international
wholesale operation also sees us
supply thousands of technology
products every week and also means
as well as being master installers, we
are also master buyers â securing the
very best prices for our customers.
Over the years we have delivered
entertainment, security and energy to
homes and businesses across the UK
and our mantra of making technology
as simple for our customers as
possible has seen us become one
of the countryâs biggest independent
technology providers.

4. Why Solar?
Put simply solar
technology is the
conversion of sunlight
into electricity.
The idea has been around for a while and
it has been a popular option for homes in
countries with long sunny days for many
years. Solar PV works by daylight.
For us in the UK though with our
infamously changeable climate it remained
on the margins as a way of generating
power.
Until now that is.
In recent years huge advances in the way
solar panels convert light into electricity
has made the entire process more
efficient, more profitable for the home or
business owner and therefore much more
suitable for the UK.
Solar has a big part to play in how ordinary
people generate their own power in the
future â and over the next few pages we
will explain how it works, what benefits you
can gain and how DAS can make solar
simple for you.
1www.dastechnology.co.uk/energy
âExcellent installation
process. No on-going
costs. Fantastic customer
services from all at DASâ
Mr Pobihun, Notts
5. At DAS weâve built our entire
business on maintaining two
core values.
Firstly we know our stuff. We are experts in
the fields we work in and live for being at the
forefront of breakthrough after breakthrough.
Secondly, we pride ourselves on turning our
technical knowledge into plain English so our
customers can understand and crucially make
informed decisions. We make everything as
simple as it can possibly be.
With that in mind, here is our whistle stop guide
to how the sun can generate your home or
business power and also make you money!
Sunlight can be converted directly into electricity
using photovoltaics â or PV for short.
Under ideal conditions, Solar panels can
convert about 15% of the sunâs radiation into
electrical power. This is the same electricity we
currently pay increasingly expensive amounts
to draw from the national grid â except this
stuff has been produced for free and with no
environmental impact whatsoever!
The PV panel has come a long way since you
first saw a small version of it on your calculator â
the technology has now developed to become
viable to power entire homes via a PV array,
usually installed on your roof.
But it doesnât stop there â the chances are
youâll actually generate much more power than
you need and you can sell this surplus power
back to the national grid! Thatâs right, youâll be
sending them a bill rather than the other way
round!
Any structure, ideally with a south facing profile
(but not exclusively so) can be used to mount
a Solar PV array meaning we can turn all sorts
of properties into power and money making
machines from homes, offices and hotels, to
factories, hospitals and leisure centres.
How does solar work?
www.dastechnology.co.uk/energy
6. 3
So letâs get down to the meat of things shall we
â what will you gain from switching to solar?
Well, installing Solar PV
will...
...reduce your carbon
footprint
Switching to green energy is one of the
easiest and quickest ways to reduce your
carbon footprint. Solar power is a âcleanâ
energy resource and an average solar
PV system will replace âdirtyâ fuel sources
and save around 20% of a homeâs carbon
footprint per year .
...potentially increase
the value of your home
More than a third of people say they would
be willing to pay more for a home where
some of its energy supply came from
renewable resources. (Energy Saving Trust
survey, 2009)
...more than pay for
itself
A solar PV system for an average house
costs between ÂŁ4,000 and ÂŁ8,000.
Save/make up to
ÂŁ1000 per year* tax
free
The new feed-in tariffs where you sell
the surplus electricity you generate back
to the grid, are projected to give you an
annual tax free return of 10-16% on that
investment for a 20 year period and a
break even time of about 7 years.
And thatâs on top of the cash youâll be
saving every single day by generating your
own electricity.
In order to understand how the financial
return is achieved, it is necessary to
explain the government backed scheme
known as the Feed in Tariff.
The benefits in detail
www.dastechnology.co.uk/energy
âI didnât have to
do anything to generate
money, itâs all done for meâ
Mr Topping, Chorley
7. The Feed-in Tariff Scheme
The feed-in Tariff is a
government regulated initiative
which was introduced in
order to increase levels of
renewable energy in the UK.
The government guarantees payments for
20 years, based on electricity produced and
electricity put back into the grid. Feed-in Tariffs
are paid by electricity suppliers in one of two
ways; either as a direct payment into your bank
account or as a credit line to your energy bills.
These payments are index linked in line with
inflation, tax free.
The Tariffs give you three financial benefits:
A payment for all the electricity you generate,1.
even if you use it yourself
Additional bonus payments for electricity you2.
export into the grid
A reduction on your standard electricity bill,3.
from using energy you produce yourself
For example, installing Solar PV on a three bedroom home with 4kwp
Solar PV panels, occupied around on average half the day would mean:
ÂŁ766 a year from the Generation Tariff
ÂŁ111 a year from the Export Tariff
ÂŁ515 saving on electricity you would
normally buy from a provider
= ÂŁ1392/year* total income/savings
The above price returns are based on a 4kWp system, south facing, 30% inclination, after 50% usage
Using November 2012 FIT rates
*The performance of solar PV systems is impossible to predict with certainty due to the variability in the amount
of solar radiation (sunlight) from location to location and from year to year. This estimate is based upon the
governments standard assessment procedure for energy ratings of buildings (SAP) and is given as guidance only.
It should not be considered as a guarantee of performance.

8. Solar Panels
Consumer

Generation
Meter
Inverter
From your roof to your toaster!
So just how does the power of the sun get
harnessed to help make your breakfast?
2 Inverter - The
DC current flows to an
inverter which converts
it into alternating current
AC, which is what we use
in our homes.
3 Generation Meter
and Consumer Unit- From
the inverter, the electricity
flows through a meter to your
consumer unit where it is
connected to the rest of your
homeâs electrical system.
4 Mains Electric Meter - This
solar energy powers your home. Itâs no
different than the power you get from
the grid, except that it is free and itâs
always used first. If itâs night time, or
there is not enough power from your
panels, then the system seamlessly
switches to the grid - to make sure
everything runs smoothly.
5Grid - If you arenât using
all your power the electricity
from your panels flows into the
grid so someone else can use it.
1 Solar PV Panels - Solar PV panels work on light
not just direct sun and rain keeps them clean - so perfect
for the great British weather. When light shines on
the solar panel cells, direct current begins to flow. The
stronger the light, the more electricity is generated.

13. While weâve got you...
There are another three incredibly simple ways you
can save cash and do your bit for the environment:
VOLTAGE
OPTIMISATION
(VO) HOME
So then, what is VO
HOME?
Itâs a voltage optimisation device designed
for use in homes and small businesses.
Which in plain English means a clever
little device which gives immediate energy
savings for the whole home or premises.
Most electrical equipment manufactured
for Europe and the UK is rated at 220V
and may indeed operate at an even lower
voltage.
One of the reasons that VO HOME
domestic voltage optimisation is so
effective is that The average voltage
supplied from The National Grid is 242V
and can be as high as 253V.
So more often than not you are being
supplied more voltage than you need â and
youâre paying for it, whether you use it or
not.
The VO Home voltage optimisation system
saves you money. On average a VO
system can save you between ÂŁ90-ÂŁ150
per year.
We told you it was simple!

LED Lighting
Weâve all heard of LED, but what actually is it
and why is it such a good thing?
Well, technology has moved on a lot since
energy saving light bulbs first came on the
scene over the last decade, so if youâve got
any preconceptions prepare to turn them off!
LED is different, very different from those dim,
slow starting âgreenâ bulbs of old. In fact due
to its energy and cost saving potential and
their massive outperformance of traditional
halogen lighting, the industry predictions
are that it wonât be long before LED lighting
replaces conventional lighting altogether.
The sooner you switch though, the more youâll
save.
