Take the long view <ul><li>Think more about establishing a relationship </li></ul><ul><li>Start a conversation… </li></ul><ul><li>Everyone has a job, family, kids, etc </li></ul><ul><li>Go with the moment or thought </li></ul><ul><li>Embrace the junky, trashy and funky stuff </li></ul><ul><li>Know your own holdings </li></ul><ul><li>Have some ready to go! </li></ul>

You can judge a book by its cover! <ul><li>Leave books on your desk that have “eye appeal” </li></ul><ul><li>Look for cover art that is bright and colorful </li></ul><ul><li>Think about mood or tone, not just “topic” </li></ul><ul><ul><li>You don’t necesarily have to be interested in the subject matter </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Good writing or an interesting story can trump topic </li></ul></ul>
  4. 4. Teens <ul><li>Simple /informative </li></ul><ul><li>Too much information is overwhelming </li></ul><ul><li>Remember fun and light </li></ul><ul><li>Add a “creep out” factor, if possible </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t emphasize reading-- use words like “look at this” or “browse” </li></ul>

Finding Items with Teen Potential <ul><li>Look for encyclopedia or magazine style layouts </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Less is more! </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Browsability </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Good photography/illustrations </li></ul><ul><li>Good teen topics: Death, crazy people, show business/pop culture, animals, paranormal, medical mysteries, war, technology </li></ul>
  6. 6. Websites that embrace the weird (and can start conversations!) <ul><li>FARK.com ( warning! not always clean) </li></ul><ul><li>Neatorama.com </li></ul><ul><li>PointlessSites.com </li></ul><ul><li>Oddee.com </li></ul><ul><li>Snopes.com </li></ul>
