This graphic shows the threat posed by digital disruption over the next five years to 14 major industries, plotted on a vortex. Common examples of a vortex in nature include whirlpools or tornadoes. The industries that will experience the most disruption in the next five years are in the center. But as we shall see, the industries on the periphery are also at risk. We use the analogy of a vortex to make sense of the complicated forces at work in digital disruption, because when we understand something, we can take action. And the more we studied digital disruption, the more we realized that a vortex explained how it really works. Digital disruption is like a vortex in three ways. A vortex pulls everything into its center – where speed gets exponential. In the Digital Vortex, the center is where everything that can be digitized – offerings, business models, value chains – is digitized. Now, this does not mean that everything that is physical will become digital. A jet engine will not transform into ones and zeroes, but the value an airline derives from it, such as remote monitoring and predictive maintenance, will increasingly rely on digital technologies and business models. A vortex is chaotic, and can pull objects on the outside directly into the center. The industries closest to the center have seen the most digitization, and are most under threat of continued disruption. However, the industries on the periphery are only one disruptor away from being in the thick of things. Who would have predicted that taxis and hotels would be disrupted so quickly and thoroughly? In a vortex, objects break apart and recombine in new ways. This is happening to industries. What industry is Amazon in? Or Apple?
In an Infor survey, 50 percent of participants from the manufacturing sector said they are taking a wait-and-see approach to 3D printing.
