5. Introduction
Environmental problems is no stranger among the global community today. This is because these
things have been around for several years and this problem has become more severe in the 21st
century now, this would threaten the balance of the ecosystem thus indirectly alter the world's
climate. Environmental problems such as water pollution, air pollution, global warming, ozone
layer depletion and so of course lead to a natural disaster that could claim up to hundreds of
human lives, let alone animals. Therefore, it is not surprising if the leaders are currently
discussing this issue at great meeting table internationally. Even the scientists are also working to
find a solution to overcome this problem. Did you know that the problem of ozone depletion has
shocked the world when scientists discovered the ozone hole in 1987? This discovery occurred in
the Antarctic. Holistic, the ozone layer is a layer that acts as a protective satrosfera from
ultraviolet radiation (UV) radiation entering continuously to the surface.
6. Cause thinning of the ozone layer
Actually, the cause of which is clearly of the thinning of the ozone layer is due to the use of
chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Typically, the use of these materials in the manufacture of air-conditioning
linked, aresol, refrigerators, and also through the manufacture of foam and solvents,
particularly in electronics factories. In this case, the chlorofluorocarbons used has increased the
rate of ozone removal indirectly cause gradual recession in the global ozone levels. Removal of
ozone that occurs this will erode the ozone layer gradually until it becomes a hole, like the saying
goes "a little-bit, long time so the hill" ozone layer will eventually leak seriously and at the time,
all living things in the earth's surface like "live shy, did not want to die." In addition, the
development of aerospace supersonic jets were not spared in contributing to the depletion of the
ozone layer is. In this case, a supersonic jet which penetrates the earth's atmosphere will release
gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and so forth. These gases remain in the
atmosphere and cause ozone molecules will react to the gas and finally the erosion of the ozone
layer will occur.
7. Effects of ozone depletion
Depletion of the ozone layer, the real invite various risks and implications for life on
earth. Human health is the most significant threat. In this case, the ultra-violet rays have between
290-320 namometer wave can cause skin diseases like melanoma. The disease occurs when the
genes in the chromosome mutates causing cell division is not systematic because of the
ultraviolet rays that are too strong. Based on the findings of scientists, a 1% reduction in the
ozone layer will lead to an increase of 5% in the case of skin diseases. This problem is most
common in western countries because most white people are more sensitive to radiation risk. In
addition, ultraviolet rays also cause eye disease. Someone who is too long exposed to ultraviolet
rays will suffer eye cataracts can lead to blindness, because of the growth of white membrane
that covers the eyes. People who are less able to finance the purchase of eye surgery and glasses
to prevent these rays will be more exposed to the risk of cataracts.
In addition, the thinning of the ozone layer will also lead to its extinction. Excessive ultraviolet
rays will cause water-borne microorganisms such as plankton will die. Marine life that depend
on plankton will also be significantly reduced and may become extinct because of the lack of
food sources. This will have a major impact on fish breeding will decrease gradually and
indirectly affect protein source for humans and other animals. Depletion of the ozone layer as
well, will cause increasing temperature. The earth's temperature above normal will cause glaciers
to the north of the Arctic and Antarctic poles will begin to melt. Dilution of this phenomenon
occurring, thus contributing to the increase in volume will cause sea water and land lace
disappeared in the sea swallow. For example, the Maldives Islands, Bangladesh, Amazon in
America and some other areas.
8. Measures to control ozone depletion
However, there are several steps that can be taken to control or mitigate the problem of the ozone
layer is thinning. Among them is to find alternative materials to replace chlorofluorocarbon use
in various industries. In this case, the parties should increase research and development efforts in
finding a substitute chlorofluorocarbons. For example, through the use of helium gas has been
studied and can be used in air-conditioning as an agent of air. This can be proved through
technology without chlorofluorocarbons in industrial air conditioners A1 Nearh created in
Taiwan and will be manufactured by the company Interlink Corporation in Malaysia.
Moreover, controlling the use of chlorofluorocarbons can also be done by holding international
conferences and conventions. In this respect, cooperation and commitment of the United Nations
(UN) and the global environmental body is important. This convention will be able to raise
awareness to the heads of state who has the executive power in their respective countries and
involve them directly in overcoming this problem. Between assembly and conference of the
heads of states and scientists who have done including convention to protect the ozone layer in
Vienna in March 1985, following the international rules for the blocking and controlling the
production and consumption kloroflorokabon known as a protocol has been agreed. Malaysia is
not left behind in the fight against the use of chlorofluorocarbons. This can be proved by an
international conference on tropical ozone and changes in the atmosphere that was held at the
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) on 20 to 23 February 1990 Likewise, Singapore has taken
action to ban the use of air pengdingin vehicle.
9. Conclusion
In conclusion, environmental problems such as ozone depletion has already stolen the various
parties to seek a solution. In fact, media outlets are not left behind to cover and try to write
articles to create awareness against humanity in order to maintain and preserve the natural
beauty. However, this problem is like "song and rhythm" that certainly can not be separated
again with human life. Although environmental problems, especially problems of ozone
depletion is quite impossible to deal with, but everyone should give it a solid partnership to
address this problem, at least for this problem can be reduced. We as human beings created by
God with a mind should have the responsibility of preserving the natural environment so that
what we have today will be shared with generations to come.
