In our previous lesson, we learned about the proper planning and lay-
outing of an orchard and the different types of orchard garden layouts.
Can you recall the different designs of orchard?
Why proper planning and lay-outing of an orchard is very important?
The different layout designs of orchard are: Square method, Rectangular
method, Quincunx or diagonal method, Equilateral triangle or Hexagonal method
and Contour or Terracing method.
Proper planning and lay-outing of an orchard is very important to ensure
proper growth of trees. Layout of an orchard must be studied and selected
according to the type of land area.
Take a look at some statements below and decide whether these are the
benefits of plant propagation using scientific process or not. Put a check (√) mark
in each item that are beneficial to plant propagation and a cross (X) mark if
doesn’t. Write your answers in your activity notebook.
⎕ 1. Less profit gained
⎕ 2. Less mortality or death of plants
⎕ 3. More plants can be harvested
⎕ 4. Bad quality plants
⎕ 5. Plants will grow fast and healthy
Trees have many uses as enumerated in the previous chapters/lessons.
The number of trees defines the love and care that we give to our environment.
Planting trees is not only an enjoyable task that serves as a past time, but
can also be a source of income or livelihood for the family and the community.

Jamimah and Afasy are siblings and they both love to plant. Since
they are young, they started to plant trees. The family produces fresh fruits
and supplies it to fruit vendors. For the past months, their sales are
obviously decreasing because they do not have enough supply to meet the
needs of their business. Afasy recall their lesson in T.L.E. 6 about using
scientific processes in planting. Afasy and Jamimah suggested it to their
parents. After months of hard work, they slowly observed that their plants
grow strong and healthy. They also observed that their plants have less
mortality. Because of that, they can produce more fruits and they can sell
more. Upon harvesting the mangoes, they can’t deny the fact that their fruit
have good quality and the best kind compared to their last harvest.
Their sales are noticeably increasing and gained more profit. Their fruit
stand business is now doing well.

everywhere. How important are they to our lives?
Health is very important to us human as well as to the animals, and trees. The
healthier we are, the better chance for us to live better lives. Same with trees, the
healthier they are, the more chance for them to produce more fruits.
Aside from keeping ourselves healthy, we must also prioritize our safety in
propagating our trees.
So, at the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
1. identify the good and safety procedures in propagating fruit-bearing
tress;
2. follow the standards for the use of tools and equipment; and
3. value the importance of wearing personal protective equipment.

Healthy and Safety Measures in Propagating Fruit-Bearing Trees
1. Have the right tools for planting trees and fruits trees.
2. Use the right tool for the right purpose. This insures efficiency of work and
safety for the user.
3. Read labels of pesticides and insecticides carefully before using. Follow
instructions as indicated.
4. Wear the proper attire when planting. Loose, comfortable, and absorbent
clothing gives freedom of movement and feeling of comfort and freshness.
Wearing a hat protects you from the extreme heat of the sun. Wear mask when
spraying insecticides.
5. Use organic fertilizer instead of those commercial ones. It is economical and
safer to use. Commercial fertilizer when used in excess can poison the soil.
6. Get rid of insects and pests that invade the tree or seedlings. Destroy them
right away before they multiply and cause damage to the tree. Aphids, plant
hoppers, leaf rollers, webworms, and ladybugs are some common insects that
feed on plants.
7. One preventive measure to avoid tree infections caused by insects is to
build a fire and allow smoke to penetrate the leaves of the tree.
8. Have a place for everything. Tools, equipment, pesticides, fertilizers,
compost should be placed where they should be. They should also be kept
away from the reach of children.
9. Before embarking on tree planting, read books and magazines, consult a
plant expert. This will equip you with the needed information on how to deal
with the different phases of gardening and tree planting.
Here are additional tips that need to be considered during propagation:
1. Before working make sure you have freshened yourself (like taking a
bath) to work well.
2. Always wear complete personal protective equipment which includes
hairnet, hand gloves, apron, boots if needed, protective eyeglass, and
face mask.
What is It
What’s More
19
3. Make sure tools and equipment are working properly before using
them.
4. Always follow instructions for use of equipment.
5. Focus on the work at hand. Do not allow yourself to get distracted.
6. Know your limits in working, seek help whenever necessary.
7. Work in proper position. Make sure you do not strain your back while
working.
In propagating fruit bearing-trees, organic fertilizers are more practical and safer to
use than commercial fertilizers and always use the right tool for the right purpose to
ensure the efficiency of work and safety of the user.
Now, it is your turn.
Can you give any health and safety measures in propagating fruit-bearing
trees? Why are these important?

  • 10. 6 Jamimah and Afasy are siblings and they both love to plant. Since they are young, they started to plant trees. The family produces fresh fruits and supplies it to fruit vendors. For the past months, their sales are obviously decreasing because they do not have enough supply to meet the needs of their business. Afasy recall their lesson in T.L.E. 6 about using scientific processes in planting. Afasy and Jamimah suggested it to their parents. After months of hard work, they slowly observed that their plants grow strong and healthy. They also observed that their plants have less mortality. Because of that, they can produce more fruits and they can sell more. Upon harvesting the mangoes, they can’t deny the fact that their fruit have good quality and the best kind compared to their last harvest. Their sales are noticeably increasing and gained more profit. Their fruit stand business is now doing well. Importance and Benefits of Plant Propagation Using Scientific Processes

Commercial fertilizer when used in excess can poison the soil. 6. Get rid of insects and pests that invade the tree or seedlings. Destroy them right away before they multiply and cause damage to the tree. Aphids, plant hoppers, leaf rollers, webworms, and ladybugs are some common insects that feed on plants. 7. One preventive measure to avoid tree infections caused by insects is to build a fire and allow smoke to penetrate the leaves of the tree. 8. Have a place for everything. Tools, equipment, pesticides, fertilizers, compost should be placed where they should be. They should also be kept away from the reach of children. 9. Before embarking on tree planting, read books and magazines, consult a plant expert. This will equip you with the needed information on how to deal with the different phases of gardening and tree planting. Here are additional tips that need to be considered during propagation: 1.
