2. What is social Interaction?
•It is the social exchange between two or more individuals, but is much more than
mere conversations and includes real exchange of ideas and familiarization with the
audience
•It is the way people communicate ideas and act with each other and various structures
of society
3. How was it done when technology
was not around?
• Traditionally it happened only when
people met PHYSICALLY, be it with
family at dinner table, or with
classmates at school/college, with
colleagues at office or with strangers
while pursuing hobbies
• However, it was limited to people in
our vicinity and circle
4. How has it changed over last few
decades?
Humans have worked a lot on overcoming barriers to social interaction like time,
geography, language, information access or even physical proximity, which has
made communication much easier, faster and our interaction circle bigger.
5. Social Interaction Today-2015
• Technology-centric Social Media Platforms have emerged that have really
widened our circle of influence
• Every person has a totally different identity (Avatar) in the virtual world where
one has access to people and information from around the world
• Virtual Players play online games with each other virtually, people share their
opinions on public forums and read others’ opinions and ideas
• Sharing one’s life experiences, learnings, external happenings are getting easier
to disperse over the web
6. How will technology shape-up
social interaction in next decade?
Social Media will reach next level
where people will share their true
issues and discuss potential
solutions rather than soak into their
new found freedom on virtual world
The world will become even
more closer with video calling
being made available on
wearables and hand-held
devices
7. Working setups will radically change
• People will be able to connect
trough virtual conferences,
making the need to physically
attend meetings redundant
• People will have access to a lot
of very specific information that
they can use to drive further
efficiencies and innovation
• The world of @ and # will
mature immensely to find, follow
and contribute right information
8. Customer preferences will evolve from
‘word of mouth’ to ‘word of mouse’
Customer feedback about
any product will reach
potential buyers as fast as
the product reaches the
market so online brand
management will be key for
new products.
Doctors will be able to
consult specialist doctors
worldwide through remote
video conferencing.
This can potentially widen
the reach of medical
services to a more remote
locations of the world
Computers with artificial
intelligence will be available which
will allow you to have virtual
friends with whom you can talk
about almost anything.
3d printers will be available all over through
which people will be able to print all necessary
things like (customized tools) which are
unavailable at certain locations instantly.
9. Pros of Technological
Changes for Social Interaction
• Removal of geographic, linguistic, physical
barriers to communication, leading to exchange of
view points between different cultures and
communities
•Human empowerment through access to content
from anywhere, anytime and any amount of detail
•People can share their ideas and opinions openly
•It will specially enable people with disabilities to
not feel out-casted or less-able, and still
communicate their ideas without others judging
them on their disabilities
•It will help introverts too to be true to their nature
but still be an extrovert in virtual space
10. Cons of Technological
Changes for Social Interaction
•Reduced personal touch and personal interactions
leading to individuals spending more time with themselves
rather than socializing in real world
•People often posting misleading information about
themselves or others which may reduce trust levels
•Websites invading individual privacy of people by using
data on social websites
•Could lead to social isolation and people losing
confidence in physical interactions
•Risky for children as they may enter unscrupulous
content and may even fall victims to harassment.
11. Conclusion
• Technology should only be used as an enabler
for increasing our social boundaries and should
not be allowed to take over our lives
• It should help us be more effective at managing
our time and save us energy rather than get us
engulfed and drain our energy
• The good thing is we are getting more and more
aware of what are the best possible uses of
technology and its worst pitfalls
• So, with some concerted effort, we can still
make the best use of technology without
impacting our physical social relationships
