Reducing the Digital Divide in Asia
Affordable and reliable internet for all people in Asia and the Pacific will only be possible if costs of internet
infrastructure across the region can be lowered significantly. This is a major challenge as only less than
15% of the population in the developing nations of Asia and the Pacific have access to high-speed internet.
In the least developed and landlocked countries inexpensive and reliable internet access is almost non-
existent. Recent developments within the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway initiative promise to
increase the international bandwidth for developing countries in the region as well as lowering internet
prices. Reliable, high capacity international fibre paths across all borders are necessary to achieve a
healthy internet connectivity.

5G Vision - 5G is not 4G+1
5G will build on the technologies we have today but will not be an extension of those technologies – a
variety of complementary technologies will be required to meet the stringent design criteria currently being
established. Those criteria will establish performance goals driven not only by societal and environmental
considerations but also by completely a new set of policy and regulatory demands.
Fundamentally new concepts and design approaches are needed that must be integrated into systems that
provide the necessary flexibility, versatility and scalability at low cost and low energy consumption. 5G will
only fulfil the promise of enabling innovative new applications if it can deliver a significant reliability and
quality of service. 5G will need to embrace spectrum sharing technologies, augmented reality, and latency
