Glossophobia or speech anxiety. Physical distress, nausea or feelings of panic.I had it. Took all courses that required papers instead of anything that required speaking. Still today, I have to go to the bathroom about 5 times before a presentation.
Three main areas I want to focus on. How to make your presentations as focused, relevant and organized as possible!
You need to figure out what the BIG idea is, the main purpose of your presentation
AS you are building your presentation, you need to do some research so that you can put your presentation in the right context and hit on all the hot buttons.
One way to start is a brainstorm using a process called Mind Mapping. This helps you get down related ideas while still letting your mind cover all the possible things you might want to include in your presentation. This can be done in a group or on a plane on the back of a cocktail napkin.
The next step is to move the Mind Map into an outline. Get all the points you might make down on paper so you don’t forget anything while you’re building your presentation. Always figure out how each point relates directly to the key message.. If it really doesn’t – get rid of it!
It would be helpful for presentation skills to have a little psychology training. You need to do a little psycho-analysis of your audience first.
Find something that appeals to each type that’s in the room or you risk: Boredom!
We’ve all been there. Once someone brings out the blackberry, you’re all through. I tend to start flapping my arms to get everyone’s attention if this happens.
Lots of research shows this. If they are reading their mail or playing with their Blackberry, they aren’t paying attention to you.
Keep it interesting with info that can stimulate both sides of the brain, that means words and pictures!
No one will bother reading it!
Sometimes it feels like you have so many messages to relate that the listener will think it sounds like a bunch of scrambled eggs.
