Now it's wildfires that have burned through 4,000 acres of forest in the southwestern part of the island continent. About 40 homes have been destroyed in the fires, and more than 100 people have been forced to leave their homes. The high winds and fire made staying unsafe, according to fire officials. No one has been seriously hurt or killed in the fires. Since Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, it's summer there now. In fact, February is the last month of summer in Australia and also marks the height of both the monsoon season in the tropical north and the riskiest period for wildfires. Australia is the world's sixth-largest country and is a little smaller than the continental United States (meaning the 48 connected states, not including Hawaii and Alaska). I think it is a shame that Australia is facing many natural disasters all at one time. I thought it was very interesting to read that it’s summer there now. Also that February is the last month of summer. I wish February was the last month of our summer too! I am very glad that no one was hurt or killed. It was very fascinating to learn that Australia has numerous weather conditions especially with their water.
