The purpose of Social Media in Schools
O Students today have never known a world without the
   Internet, where as most of their teachers and parents
   went to school before “clicks and shares”

O Experts argue that blocking students from purposeful
   online interaction does more harm than good.

O Some educators and schools strongly advocate for social
   media as a way to engage students in accessible,
   personalized learning.

Reasons to Use Social Media in School
1. Opens the world of education.
    •  It can break down walls and help build relationships with families and community. Parents
       can see what their children are doing in class, can view assignments and homework, and
       even gain access to other classroom’s “newsletters”, etc.

2. Minimizes isolation.
    •   Teachers and students in small schools can be connected through social networks and the
        feeling of isolation can dissipate. Ideas and camaraderie can be extended outside of the a
        single building to all over the world.

3. Builds tolerance and understanding of cultural diversity.
     •   Having the opportunity to connect with people all over the world breaks down a lot of
         barriers and builds understanding.

4. Amplifies passion.
    •   The child who does not feel anyone has similar interests in the classroom, is not limited
        anymore. Connections outside of a school can be facilitated so their passion thrives.

5. It’s free.
      •    Social media does not have costs, only internet access and technology requirements

Some things that must be consider for the successful implementation of Social
Media in schools…
   1. Is there transparency with online activity and experiences

   2. Is there a school climate that supports TMEs.

       •   “I would try to build a school culture where sharing is just a normal part of what we do and where we
           understand the relevance of this global exchange of ideas and information to what we do in the
           classroom” (Richardson, 2010)

   3. Is there a Safety Policy or Code of Conduct for SM use that outlines etiquette and expected
      behaviour

   4. Who is the target audience: teachers, students, parents, or community

   5. Who will have access and are URL’s on website and in newsletters

   6. What is are the ground rules for appropriate responses from interactive entries

   7. Do parents have access and are they aware of what, how, when, & why social media is being
      used?

                   Social Media in Schools.
“ There is concern from school administrators and teachers that connecting students online

may have more detrimental effect than benefit — due to inappropriate communication or

content, privacy exploitation or cyberbullying. However, if the correct structures are put in

place and content is monitored, then social media can become a valuable an interactive

teaching tool. “

Parents can see what their children are doing in class, can view assignments and homework, and even gain access to other classroom’s “newsletters”, etc. 2. Minimizes isolation. • Teachers and students in small schools can be connected through social networks and the feeling of isolation can dissipate. Ideas and camaraderie can be extended outside of the a single building to all over the world. 3. Builds tolerance and understanding of cultural diversity. • Having the opportunity to connect with people all over the world breaks down a lot of barriers and builds understanding. 4. Amplifies passion. • The child who does not feel anyone has similar interests in the classroom, is not limited anymore. Connections outside of a school can be facilitated so their passion thrives. 5.
