4. Assessment
Check to see whether the linen needs to be
changed.
Determine what linens are needed.
Assess for drainage or incontinence to determine
whether personal protective equipment, such as
procedure gloves and gown, is needed.
6. Procedural Steps
***ALWAYS wash hands before and after bed making***
Step 1: Position the bed flat, raise to appropriate working
height, and lower siderails.
Step 2: Loosen all the bedding
Step 3: Remove the bottom and top sheet, draw sheet,
and pillowcases. Holding the items away from your body,
place them in a linen bag or hamper.
7. Step 4: Place the fitted sheet on one side of the bed, and
smooth it out over half the mattress. Go around to the other
side and do the same.
Step 5: Place the drawsheet in the middle of the mattress,
tuck the side in under the mattress, and smooth out over half
the mattress. Go around to the other side and do the same
ensuring the wrinkles are out of the fitted sheet and
drawsheet.
Step 6: Place the top sheet and blanket along one side of the
mattress. Tuck in the top sheet and blanket at the same time,
mitering the corners. Go to the other side of bed and smooth
top linens and repeat the step.
Step 7: Fanfold the top sheet and bed spread back to the foot
of the bed.
8. Step 8: Change pillowcases
-Turn the pillowcase wrong side out. Grasp the middle of
the closed end of the pillowcase. Reaching through the
pillowcase, grasp the end of the pillow-pull the pillowcase
down over the pillow.
***Return the bed to the lowest position, place the call bell
and patient’s belongings within reach.
