TEACH THE DOCTRINE
➤ Page 20: Paragraph 1
➤ “The Savior has commanded us to “teach one another the doctrine of the kingdom”. As we do,
the Holy Ghost bears witness of the truthfulness of the doctrine and inspires people to
live it. Doctrine does not change—rather, it changes us, and it changes those we teach.”
➤ It’s tempting to impress a crowd, or to make teenagers ‘like’ us, but the effects are limited.
➤ What drives real change?
➤ Alma 31
➤ The Zoramites were way off course. They were worshipping idols. They broke off from
the Nephites.
➤ Alma, Ammon, Aaron, Owner & Himni head out to bring them back. What is their
strategy?

➤ Korihor had tried to impress them, warp doctrine, make life sound easy. Alma
knew better.

1. HOW DO WE KNOW WE’RE TEACHING TRUE DOCTRINE?
➤ Does it relate to the doctrine of Christ?
➤ Page 459 of the Book of Mormon is your guide (3 Ne 27)
➤ How will what I am teaching help my class members build faith in Christ,
repent, make and keep sacred covenants with God, and receive the Holy Ghost?
➤ Does it teach about their role in the Plan of Salvation?
➤ Page 20, Paragraph 6
➤ “Sometimes learners—especially youth—wonder how gospel principles
relate to them or why they should obey certain commandments. However, if
they understand Heavenly Father’s eternal plan for the happiness of His
children, the reasons for gospel principles and commandments become
clearer and the motivation to obey increases.”
➤ ATOT: Challah Bread, if I came in and taught you about yeast, kneading, proofing and
baking, you wouldn’t be compelled. You need to taste it and know its benefits to want to
learn!
2. HOW DO WE HELP THEM UNDERSTAND?
➤ 1 Ne 19:23, How do we ‘liken’ scripture?
➤ How did the Savior do this?
➤ He taught what his listeners knew (farming, fishing,
wedding feasts, oil/lamps)
➤ He was trying to make it familiar
➤ ATOT: Radio stations playing new songs. They always cushion it
with something familiar. We need to do that too.
HOW DO WE ‘APPLY THE TEACHING TO OUR TIME’?
➤ 1. Clearly narrow down what you’re trying to teach
➤ I’m not just going to teach adversity, I’m going to teach about
how using the scriptures helps me overcome adversity.
➤ 2. Break that down into blocks (think like an artist)
➤ I need to show how getting help from another better source
makes me stronger
➤ 3. Think about what your class relates to
➤ What do they encounter on a daily basis?
➤ basketball, baking, legos, phones, commuting, etc.
➤ 4. Think through that concept and find a good connector
➤ Don’t be scared to process and ditch ideas
PRACTICE
➤ Come Follow Me, May 2017
➤ How can I improve my scripture study?
➤ Prepare yourself spiritually
➤ “Immersion in the scriptures is essential for spiritual nourishment”
➤ Pass out the papers and have them go through the steps to teach this
concept to their child
➤ 1. What am I teaching?
➤ 2. What are the blocks?
➤ 3. What does my class relate to?
➤ 4. What can I teach that will connect the two?
CONCLUSION
➤ Who does teaching benefit?
➤ What do we teach?
➤ Does it teach of Christ?
➤ Does it teach of their role in the Plan
of Salvation?
➤ Does it use scripture/words of the
prophets?
➤ How can we liken the scriptures?
➤ Narrow your focus

➤ Teach to the student
➤ Find the connections
➤ When in doubt, Testify

  • 1. TEACH THE DOCTRINE Teacher Development, Part 3

  • 3. INTRODUCTION ➤ D&C 88:77 ➤ Why are we asked to teach? ➤ Why don’t we come to church and watch videos of experts teaching? ➤ D&C 88:78 ➤ Grace = enabling power ➤ Who is being instructed? Both the learner and the teacher. ➤ Who is the teacher? The Holy Ghost
  • 4. TEACH THE DOCTRINE ➤ Page 20: Paragraph 1 ➤ “The Savior has commanded us to “teach one another the doctrine of the kingdom”. As we do, the Holy Ghost bears witness of the truthfulness of the doctrine and inspires people to live it. Doctrine does not change—rather, it changes us, and it changes those we teach.” ➤ It’s tempting to impress a crowd, or to make teenagers ‘like’ us, but the effects are limited. ➤ What drives real change? ➤ Alma 31 ➤ The Zoramites were way off course. They were worshipping idols. They broke off from the Nephites. ➤ Alma, Ammon, Aaron, Owner & Himni head out to bring them back. What is their strategy? ➤ Alma 31:5, they would preach the word! ➤ What happened in the previous chapter? ➤ Korihor had tried to impress them, warp doctrine, make life sound easy. Alma knew better.

What did they do? ➤ They taught truth ➤ They helped you understand it ➤ Their teaching made you want to change

HOW DO WE KNOW WE’RE TEACHING TRUE DOCTRINE? ➤ Does it relate to the doctrine of Christ? ➤ Page 459 of the Book of Mormon is your guide (3 Ne 27) ➤ How will what I am teaching help my class members build faith in Christ, repent, make and keep sacred covenants with God, and receive the Holy Ghost? ➤ Does it teach about their role in the Plan of Salvation? ➤ Page 20, Paragraph 6 ➤ “Sometimes learners—especially youth—wonder how gospel principles relate to them or why they should obey certain commandments. However, if they understand Heavenly Father’s eternal plan for the happiness of His children, the reasons for gospel principles and commandments become clearer and the motivation to obey increases.” ➤ ATOT: Challah Bread, if I came in and taught you about yeast, kneading, proofing and baking, you wouldn’t be compelled. You need to taste it and know its benefits to want to learn!

HOW DO WE HELP THEM UNDERSTAND? ➤ 1 Ne 19:23, How do we ‘liken’ scripture? ➤ How did the Savior do this? ➤ He taught what his listeners knew (farming, fishing, wedding feasts, oil/lamps) ➤ He was trying to make it familiar ➤ ATOT: Radio stations playing new songs. They always cushion it with something familiar. We need to do that too.
  • 8. HOW DO WE ‘APPLY THE TEACHING TO OUR TIME’? ➤ 1. Clearly narrow down what you’re trying to teach ➤ I’m not just going to teach adversity, I’m going to teach about how using the scriptures helps me overcome adversity. ➤ 2. Break that down into blocks (think like an artist) ➤ I need to show how getting help from another better source makes me stronger ➤ 3. Think about what your class relates to ➤ What do they encounter on a daily basis? ➤ basketball, baking, legos, phones, commuting, etc. ➤ 4. Think through that concept and find a good connector ➤ Don’t be scared to process and ditch ideas

PRACTICE ➤ Come Follow Me, May 2017 ➤ How can I improve my scripture study? ➤ Prepare yourself spiritually ➤ “Immersion in the scriptures is essential for spiritual nourishment” ➤ Pass out the papers and have them go through the steps to teach this concept to their child ➤ 1. What am I teaching? ➤ 2. What are the blocks? ➤ 3. What does my class relate to? ➤ 4. What can I teach that will connect the two?

CONCLUSION ➤ Who does teaching benefit? ➤ What do we teach? ➤ Does it teach of Christ? ➤ Does it teach of their role in the Plan of Salvation? ➤ Does it use scripture/words of the prophets? ➤ How can we liken the scriptures? ➤ Narrow your focus ➤ Find the blocks ➤ Teach to the student ➤ Find the connections ➤ When in doubt, Testify ➤ Alma 5:45-48
