• Chapter 16: Daivasura-Sampad-Vibhaga Yoga (The yoga of discrimination between the divine and the demonical properties) - 24 verses.
Krishna indicates the divine and the demonic traits present in human nature. After mentioning twenty-six godly qualities, Krishna explains the demoniac nature which degrades the soul through arrogant, ignorant, and conceited pursuits of sense gratification and power (16:1-18).
He counsels that, in order to attain the supreme destination, one must give up lust, anger and greed (16:21-22).
Assisted by buddhi (intellect) and supported by scriptural confirmation, one should discern right and wrong and act appropriately (16:24).

The material world is like the
reflection of the real thing in
a body of water
The phenomenal world is
compared to the Asvatta
tree on account of its
everchanging nature.
The Roots are in BRAHMAN
Brahman with maya is very subtle
Chapter 15 described the Banyan
tree of the material world. The
modes of material nature nourish
both the upper, auspicious, divine
branches of the tree and the lower,
demoniac branches
Extra roots of the banyan tree were
also compared to the activities of the
living entities, some auspicious and
some inauspicious
Chapter 16 explains the divine
qualities that elevate one on the tree
and leads ultimately to liberation
Chapter 16 also explains the
demoniac qualities and the mentality
which drives one lower on the tree
and ultimately to hell

9. POSITIVE THOUGHTS.
Positive thoughts take us towards
our spiritual goal,
NEGATIVE THOUGHTS.
“Daivi Sampat” in Sanskrit,
•Daivi Sampat is conducive to
Self-Knowledge -MOKSHA
Negative thoughts patterns take us away.
called “Asuri Sampat”.
•Asuri Sampat is an obstacle to spiritual pursuit.
. BONDAGE
This chapter analyzes human nature-2 types of thought patterns -Sampada means treasure.
•Hence thought is the subtlest seed that determines your future. As you think, so shall you become.
•We generally neglect our thought patterns because
it’s too subtle and too fleeting, and others can’t
see it.
• But we should remember that our thought patterns
determine our destiny.
•
• Watch your thoughts, they become your words,
• watch your words, they become your actions,
• watch your actions, they become your habits,
• watch your habits, they become your character,
• watch your character, it becomes your destiny.

12. [Without exception, every one in this universe falls under one of these two groups.
From this it is evident that all seekers of knowledge must necessarily lead a spiritual (sattvic) life
avoiding materialistic (rajasic and tamasic) tendencies.].
One should know what the scriptures say and act accordingly (16.23, 24).
Though values themselves do not give liberation, they are necessary to
gain knowledge.
They alone prepare the mind and make it fit for receiving the knowledge.
Vedānta is a pramāṇa (means of knowledge) only for a prepared mind.
Self-knowledge (jñānayoga) which is the
direct means for liberation.

Kṛṣṇa discusses the values to be
followed by a seeker. (Ch 16 & 17 )

13. We do not have the concept of Devil, as we noted in para 10.2.
Gods and demons are none else than projections of human beings on a symbolic plane.
Krishna told in 7:12. Good and bad are both from Brahman. We have no concept of devil, found
in other religions as the arch- rival of God.
Evil is a product of rajas and tamas and whenever there is upsurge of evil, the divine scheme
takes care of it in the form of an avatāra as we saw in chapter four. The divine scheme takes care
of restoration of sattva.
There are episodes in the Upanishads which talk about the battle between gods and demons
the clash between gods and demons is an allegorical picture of the internal clash
between the divine and the demonic qualities in a human being.
The mythological story of churning the ocean of milk
the ocean is but the human mind,
the Gods and demons are our own good and bad attributes.
A successful churning yields the nectar of wisdom.
There are two types of thought patterns
The Upanishads say that the divine are few in number and
the demonic are numerous.
Hence a longer cataloguing of such attributes
Krishna assures that Arjuna is endowed with the divine attributes. It implies that Arjuna was having the
sattva frame of mind when he was engaged in the battle.

14. All the virtues you appreciate in others are present in you,
they just need to be nurtured .Virtues cannot be cultivated.
Krishna said to Arjuna, "Grieve not Arjuna, you are born with virtues."
Do not compare yourself with them.
Simply recognize all the virtues you appreciate in others, and
realize that they are already present in you in seed form.

Upanishads have sometimes divided human nature in two categories –divine and
demonic – and at some other places divided the same in three categories – divine,
human and demonic
Gita dwell with the demonic attributes in greater
detail in order to demonstrate the qualities to be
avoided. The seeker can achieve purity of mind only
when he can overcome the above obstacles in the path
of knowledge.

23. Abhayam : Among all the virtues, the Lord first takes up
what maybe described as the 'lion' among good qualities-fear-
lessness (ahhayam).
So if this fear is eradicated all other evil and weakness,
disappear gradually. Fearlessness will bring with it all the other
shining virtues which lead to liberation. So it is the virtue of
•daivisampat'.
why fearlessness is given the first place ?
(1)Fear is the source of all evil, and from fear arises all other bad qualities.
Men cheat, betray, fight, kill, dominate, suppress truth, and do every evil
thing, out of fear.
(2)All weakness is caused by fear.
(3)Man suffers misery by fear.
(4)Men clings to this life, wife and children, houses and positions on
account of fear.
(5)The whole Samara is built on fear.
(6) FEAR OF DEATH
GITA Ch 16 , Verses 1- 3
24. develops freedom from fear or anxiety about
the outcome of work.
When a spiritual aspirant offers
the fruit of his action to God
becomes less egotistic
he grows in devotion
While doing any work, a devotee learns to look upon himself as a
luminous spiritual entity different from the body and the restless mind.
He strives to emulate the sattvic worker described in the Gita
“He who is free from attachment and egotism, endowed
with fortitude and zeal, and unaffected by success and
failure—such a person is said to be a sattvic worker.”
(Gita, 18.26)

25. In this tug-of-war with the evil forces, fearlessness is chosen as the
captain to lead the team of virtues on the battle-field of everybody's
heart.
Thus, Abbayam, the first virtue declared by the Lord
should bo practised by every seeker for spiritual realization.
The Upanishads declare that 'abhayam, is the state of Brahman.

26. 3--JnanayogavyavasthltaJt: Though different yogas are taught
in the Gila, here and there the superior excellence of jnanayoga
is mentioned as Atmajnana is the goal of sparitual life.
Therefore the Lord mentions it in the beginning, and the seekers
should take to knowledge and cross over delusion and ignorance.

and yogas culminate in jnana.

27. Akrodhah : Absence of anger. Krodha is man's deadly
foe in every way. Obsessed by it man loses all discrimination
and destroys himself by cruel beavior towards elders and
Gurus. So the Lord has already warned man against it (Krodha
bhavati sammohah).

Under its power man is transformed into a demon, horrible to look at,

the primary duty of man in his life, both secular and spiritual.

33. 3 GATES OF
HELL
16.21 – 16.22
1. These verses describe the beginning of demoniac life – All these demoniac
qualities begin with lust, anger and greed (3 gates to hell)
2. Extreme danger from these gates
Ѣ They can kill the self to such an extent that there will be no possibility from this
material entanglement
Ѣ Thus they lead to degradation of soul
1. Basis of whole method and prescription of Vedic literature
Ѣ The entire method is based on giving up lust and anger
Ѣ The more one gives up, the more his existence becomes pure
Ѣ Then he can follow all the rules and regulations and gradually rise to spiritual
realization
Ѣ Thus one can rise to the platform of Krishna Consciousness
34. The Lord explains the way to escape from the triple gateway to Hell.
GITA Ch 16 , Verses 21
Shree Krishna now describes the origin of the demoniac disposition,
and pinpoints lust, anger, and greed as the three causes for it.
Previously, in verse 3.36, Arjun had asked him why people are impelled to commit sin,
even unwillingly, as if by force. Shree Krishna had answered that it is lust,
which later transforms into anger, and is the all-devouring enemy of the world.
Greed is also a transformation of lust, as explained in detail in the commentary
of verse 2.62. Together, lust, anger, and greed are the foundations
from which the demoniac vices develop. They fester in the mind and
make it a suitable ground for all other vices to take root. Consequently,
Shree Krishna labels them as gateways to hell, and strongly advices
to shun them to avoid self-destruction. Those desirous of welfare should
learn to dread these three and carefully avoid their presence in their own personality.

Matthew 16:18. In this passage, Jesus is referring to the building of
His church: “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build
my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”
(Matthew 16:18).

Krishna declares in the Bhagavadgita that people should get most profound
knowledge from experts in the field. [2]
He says that extreme
desire (aasha),
greed (lobha) and
lustful attitude (kama) of a person
destroy both knowledge and intellect. They eclipse the mind and intellect.
Hence one should control the sense organs and passion.

36. Imprisoned in a Cage
We become angry when our cravings are not fulfilled.
Greed is the food that sustains cravings and feeds the ego.
The ego is the cheerleader of cravings—
it enshrines self- conceit, possessiveness, and jealousy (BG XVI:12-16).

They destroy the self and foster
the demon in man.
Any trace of the foes, kâma,
krodha and lobha, left

potential danger; so they must
be reduced to ashes.
GITA Ch 16 , Verses 21
They have to be overwhelmed and
