Putrakameshti Yagna
THE PICTURE RAMAYANABHAVANRAO SHRINIVASRAO
Ramayana - Putrakameshti yagna - who did this yagna, why, and where?
Kousalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyi are the three wives of King Dasaratha of
Ayodhya, in the 24,000-verse Sansrkit epic called the Ramayana, and the
mothers of the heroes Rama, Lakshmana, Bharatha, and Shatrughna.
In the Ramayana, Dasaratha, the husband concurrently of these three
ladies, is childless. He performs the Putrakameshti Yagna, a sacrifice
seeking progeny from the almighty. Hearing his plea, a divine being,
purusha, emerges from the holy sacrificial fire, bearing a bowl of
payasam, a milk sweet, and asks Dasaratha to feed the sweet to his wife;
she would then have a son.
The tale about the distribution of this Payasam is interesting: upon
receiving the chalice, Dasaratha goes forthwith to his second, but
favorite wife, Kaikeyi. She however urges him first to give a share of the
Payasam to Kaushalya, the senior queen. Dasaratha goes to Kaushalya
and leaves half the payasam with her, returning immediately to Kaikeyi.
Even as Kaikeyi is about to partake of the payasam, Dasaratha is called
away.
Kaikeyi knows that Dasaratha has not given any Payasam to Sumitra.
Kaushalya also suspects likewise. Both Kaushalya and Kaikeyi go inBoth Kaushalya and Kaikeyi go in
turn to Sumitra, and give her portions from the payasam that the king leftturn to Sumitra, and give her portions from the payasam that the king left
with them.with them. Thus, although the King her husband gave Sumitra no
Payasam at all, she gets to have two portions of it, courtesy her co-
wives; she therefore becomes the mother of not one but two sons.
Queen Kaushalya gives birth to the eldest son, Rama;
Bharatha is born to Queen Kaikeyi; and
the two sons born to Queen Sumitra are the twins Lakshmana and
Shatrughna.

Lakshmana.
Vishvamitra gives them the knowledge of the Devastras or celestial
weaponry [bala and adi bala], trains them in advanced religion and
guides them to kill powerful demons like Tataka, Maricha and Subahu.
He also leads them to the Swayamvara ceremony for princess Sita,
who becomes wife of Rama.
The great sage “VISVAMITRA” requested king DASHARATHA

AHALYA'S STORY
Legend goes that Sage Gautama and his wife Ahalya were living in a
hermitage. Smitten by Ahalya’s beauty, Indra seduces her in the
guise of Sage Gautama and she submits to his seduction. The real
sage catches them red-handed, curses Indra to become infertile
and turns his wife into stone.
Gautama doesn’t turn Ahalya into a stone! ‘Lie in dust without food
and think about the wrong that you have committed.’
She begs her husband for mercy and he relents saying that when
Rama comes and touches her (she is a stone) with his feet, she will
regain her form and join him (Sage Gautama). So Ahalya turned into
a stone and waited there until Viswamitra brought Rama there en
route to Mithila. As Rama’s feet touched the stone, Ahalya regained
her form, blessed Rama and went on to join her husband.
Ahalya the wife of sage Gautam

THE BREAKING OF SHIVA’S BOW
AND
THE WEDDING OF SITA
63
http://blog.onlineprasad.com/why-did-rama-break-lord-shivas-bow/
Why Did Rama Break Shiva’s Bow ?
1. Lord Shiva had gifted his famous bow to Devarata, who was a
great devotee and the ancestor of King Janaka.
2. This bow was extremely powerful and heavy, and it was made
by Lord Vishwakarma and gifted to Lord Shiva.
3. King Janaka’s daughter Sita had lifted the bow once while
playing with her sisters. This could not be done by anyone else in
the kingdom, so Janaka was astonished.
4. So King Janaka declared that Sita would be married only to a
man who could lift and string the Shiva Dhanush.
5. A great Yagna or swayamvar was held at King Janaka’s
kingdom where all eligible bachelors visted including Lord Rama.
6. The challenge was simple. Anyone who lifted and strung the
bow would win Sita’s hand in marriage.
7. All others failed but Lord Rama lifted the bow easily. When he
was about to string the bow, it broke. Such was the strength of
Lord Rama.
8. This incident proved the greatness of Lord Rama (or Lord
Vishnu) and the legendary Shiva Dhanush which had slayed the
powerful demon Tripurasura.

Urmila went into a trance and fell unconscious. She remained in the
same room where she was when he left for the forest, for fourteen long
years, till he returned. She never had any worldly desires.
She regained consciousness only after his return.
Some other versions show her to be a woman of character.
She was known to be a great scholar.
Some versions of the Ramayana portray her as a talented painter
who could draw anything in no time.
73
Who was Lakshmana? He was Adhisesha himself, who bears the
weight of mother earth. Urmila was one of noble qualities.

  • 23. THE PICTURE RAMAYANABHAVANRAO SHRINIVASRAO Ramayana - Putrakameshti yagna - who did this yagna, why, and where? Kousalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyi are the three wives of King Dasaratha of Ayodhya, in the 24,000-verse Sansrkit epic called the Ramayana, and the mothers of the heroes Rama, Lakshmana, Bharatha, and Shatrughna. In the Ramayana, Dasaratha, the husband concurrently of these three ladies, is childless. He performs the Putrakameshti Yagna, a sacrifice seeking progeny from the almighty. Hearing his plea, a divine being, purusha, emerges from the holy sacrificial fire, bearing a bowl of payasam, a milk sweet, and asks Dasaratha to feed the sweet to his wife; she would then have a son. The tale about the distribution of this Payasam is interesting: upon receiving the chalice, Dasaratha goes forthwith to his second, but favorite wife, Kaikeyi. She however urges him first to give a share of the Payasam to Kaushalya, the senior queen. Dasaratha goes to Kaushalya and leaves half the payasam with her, returning immediately to Kaikeyi. Even as Kaikeyi is about to partake of the payasam, Dasaratha is called away. Kaikeyi knows that Dasaratha has not given any Payasam to Sumitra. Kaushalya also suspects likewise. Both Kaushalya and Kaikeyi go inBoth Kaushalya and Kaikeyi go in turn to Sumitra, and give her portions from the payasam that the king leftturn to Sumitra, and give her portions from the payasam that the king left with them.with them. Thus, although the King her husband gave Sumitra no Payasam at all, she gets to have two portions of it, courtesy her co- wives; she therefore becomes the mother of not one but two sons. Queen Kaushalya gives birth to the eldest son, Rama; Bharatha is born to Queen Kaikeyi; and the two sons born to Queen Sumitra are the twins Lakshmana and Shatrughna. https://in.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100711085710AAoELIY

  • 58. https://meenakshisblog.wordpress.com/2013/08/29/ahalya/ AHALYA'S STORY Legend goes that Sage Gautama and his wife Ahalya were living in a hermitage. Smitten by Ahalya’s beauty, Indra seduces her in the guise of Sage Gautama and she submits to his seduction. The real sage catches them red-handed, curses Indra to become infertile and turns his wife into stone. Gautama doesn’t turn Ahalya into a stone! ‘Lie in dust without food and think about the wrong that you have committed.’ She begs her husband for mercy and he relents saying that when Rama comes and touches her (she is a stone) with his feet, she will regain her form and join him (Sage Gautama). So Ahalya turned into a stone and waited there until Viswamitra brought Rama there en route to Mithila. As Rama’s feet touched the stone, Ahalya regained her form, blessed Rama and went on to join her husband.

  • 64. http://blog.onlineprasad.com/why-did-rama-break-lord-shivas-bow/ Why Did Rama Break Shiva’s Bow ? 1. Lord Shiva had gifted his famous bow to Devarata, who was a great devotee and the ancestor of King Janaka. 2. This bow was extremely powerful and heavy, and it was made by Lord Vishwakarma and gifted to Lord Shiva. 3. King Janaka’s daughter Sita had lifted the bow once while playing with her sisters. This could not be done by anyone else in the kingdom, so Janaka was astonished. 4. So King Janaka declared that Sita would be married only to a man who could lift and string the Shiva Dhanush. 5. A great Yagna or swayamvar was held at King Janaka’s kingdom where all eligible bachelors visted including Lord Rama. 6. The challenge was simple. Anyone who lifted and strung the bow would win Sita’s hand in marriage. 7. All others failed but Lord Rama lifted the bow easily. When he was about to string the bow, it broke. Such was the strength of Lord Rama. 8. This incident proved the greatness of Lord Rama (or Lord Vishnu) and the legendary Shiva Dhanush which had slayed the powerful demon Tripurasura.
