Image ideas
1. This image would be ideal for the front cover image as the pose represents
elegance and sexiness. The image has been taken from a low angle shot to
capture her importance and covey her to be superior. This relates to the target
audience of men as they may look up to her and dream of marrying a girl alike
her. The lighting has been projected to show the lighter and darker areas of her
jacket portraying her to be wealthy and rich. Her hair has been volumised to add
diverse to the photograph and make the photo look less perfect. Her body
language of her hand covering part of her jacket suggests she is perhaps naked
underneath and reinforces the idea of her being seductive to persuade men to
buy the magazine. Her facial expressions reveal her to be not smiling which is
similar to the cover images presented on Q magazine. This is a key feature for my
front cover magazine as this is essential for appealing to the target audience of
men. Her use of make-up and red lips show that she is very heavily made up and
portray the shoot to have been staged. The light background behind contrasts
with the dark colours of her jacket signifying her to be the main focal point of the
image.
This image is also ideal for the front cover of my magazine as the dark tones of
the photograph represent the theme of rock. The model’s pale face reflects
against the dark background illustrating her to be the centre point of the image.
Her dark lip-stick stands out from the rest of the image conveying the models use
of make-up to be an important feature of the photo shoot. Her hair has been
styled so that it is swept back from her face. This is effective as it reinforces the
importance of the models make-up. Furthermore, the model is conveyed to be
wearing a black dress with jewels which corresponds with the dark, black
background signifying her to be mysterious and secretive.
I believe an image of the model looking directly at the camera is effective for my
front cover as it engages the audience and makes them feel as though they are
being watched when looking at a range of magazines on a magazine stand
persuading them to buy the magazine. Furthermore, this pose is typically used in
a photo-shoot as they are staged and the models have been told exactly how to
pose. After looking at these two photographs, I think shooting against a dark
background will help represent the pop/rock genre. In addition, my model will be
wearing bold and bright make- up and a black background will help the make-up
to stand out.
2. These images would be appropriate for a double page spread. The image above
is effective as the image takes over two thirds of the page following the rule of
thirds. Having an image positioned to the side of the page would be ideal for a
double page spread as I could then place the pull quote besides the picture. Her
pose of her hand by her lip conveys the photo shoot to be very staged as women
are typically pictured to not pose like this. This type of pose implies her to be
very provocative and flirtatious, which men would
stereotypically find attractive in women. Her clothing
is shown to be very low cut to persuade the male
target audience. Furthermore, the black and white
effect of the photograph implies her to be very
mysterious making the reader want to find out more
about her.
This image would be ideal for a double page spread as the image takes over the
majority of the page. The models hair has purposely been styled to give more volume
to represent the rock genre. The scruffy look of her hair is effective as this
immediately draws the attention of the reader and brings them to focus on this first.
The black and white effect helps emphasise her key features, making them seen more
vivid than they actually, for example her cheekbones have been highlighted to show a
dark shadow beneath them to convey how big they are. The image has been captured
from a close up to reinforce the emphasise on her key features. Alike the first image,
her facial expressions portray her to not be smiling and to be very serious. This is an
important element of the magazine as a model not smiling and a model smiling
portray different feelings. An image of a model looking happy and smiling would be
ideal for a pop based magazine suited for teenage girls such as Top of the Pops.
After looking at a range of different images as ideas for my cover and double page spread I have found that most of the photographs have
been taken from a close up shot and a mid-shot to focus on the model’s facial characteristics. I believe this is a very important factor to
include in my photo-shoot as this type of shot will help engage the reader in and help establish the type of genre that is being portrayed
through the models facial expressions and vivid make-up. I will also include props such as an electric guitar or an amp in mid-shots to relate
to the theme of pop/rock. I may also edit my photos to black and white like the images shown above as I believe this effect relates to my
style of magazine. I believe it is important to take in consideration the layout of my page as for a double page spread image I want to
include at least one pull quote from my selected article.
