Madame C.J. Walker was the first female self-made millionaire who made her fortune through developing and marketing hair care products for black women in the early 1900s. She opened a factory and beauty school in Pittsburgh after suffering hair loss as a child due to a scalp ailment. Walker donated much of her money and helped empower African American women through entrepreneurship before her death in 1919.
