Students of AMF 2012 Spring Soiree

  1. 1. Media Contact: Grace McIntyre grace@studentsofamf.org 919.810.0453 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE National Students of AMF to Host Third Annual Spring Soiree Event celebrates the nonprofit’s nation-wide impact on grieving college students RALEIGH, N.C. (April 10, 2012) – Grief is difficult at any age, but it can be devastating when it occurs during college. Sadly, one out of three college students has experienced the death of a close friend or family member in the last year. Six years ago, nothing existed on college campuses to support grieving college students and “alone, helpless, guilty, depressed” best described these students nationwide. Today, “empowered, connected, supported, inspired” more appropriately describes the 2000+ college students on over 170 college campuses (43 official campus chapters) that have been touched by the National Students of AMF Support Network (grieving college students Actively Moving Forward). Founded and headquartered in Raleigh since 2006, National Students of AMF supports college students coping with the illness or death of a loved one and empowers them to channel their grief towards positive outlets, like raising money for cancer research in memory of a parent. The National Students of AMF’s signature fundraising event, the 3rd Annual Spring Soiree will be held on April 27, 2012 from 7:00-10:00pm at Flanders Art Gallery at 302 South West Street in downtown Raleigh. 250-300 supporters will come together to celebrate the organization’s achievements and raise funds to continue to provide support to college students nationwide. All proceeds will be used to support grieving college students nationwide. The night will feature silent and live auctions, Barbara Gibbs of ABC-11 as Mistress of Ceremonies, food courtesy of Mia Francesca, music by DJ Frank Meldau, and a speech by Kelly Hudson (AMF Chapter President at Central Michigan). “Even though we are always focused on reaching more and more grieving college students, there is one night a year where we can truly celebrate the impact that our students and volunteers are making on one another’s lives,” said David Fajgenbaum, Raleigh resident and co- founder of National Students of AMF, whose mother Anne Marie Fajgenbaum, passed away from brain cancer when he was in his sophomore year of college. “When my mom passed away in 2004, I promised her that I would create an outlet for college students, who, like me, were coping with a loved one’s illness or death and were suffering in silence. The energy generated by the event will make a difference for college students nationwide.” Go to www.amfsoiree.org for additional information about the event. If you or your media team would be interested in covering or promoting the event, please contact Marisa Rendeiro (marisar@studentsofamf.org), Grace McIntyre (grace@studentsofamf.org), or David Fajgenbaum (david@studentsofamf.org; 919-810-0453). About National Students of AMF Support Network Founded in 2006, the mission of National Students of AMF (www.studentsofamf.org) is to support college students grieving the illness or death of a loved one. 35-48% of college student have lost a family member or close friend within the last two years. Students at AMF chapters provide peer support to fellow students facing bereavement. Since its inception, National Students of AMF has formed 43 official chapters with many more in development. In addition to providing peer support, members are empowered to give back to their communities by engaging in service projects to volunteer and raise awareness and funds for causes that are important to chapter members. ###
