This internship is for a social media intern position at Komen Iowa from January 28 - May 17, 2013. The intern will be responsible for finding and creating engaging social media content that promotes Komen Iowa's mission and brand. Primary duties include increasing engagement on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn and promoting events using online strategies. This position requires an ability to build strong relationships with community organizations, volunteers,
colleagues and the health care community. The ideal candidate is committed to the mission and the
importance of raising awareness about breast cancer, and moving one step closer to finding a cure.
Basic Function:
Komen Iowa is looking for a highly organized individual to serve as the Social Media Intern for the 2013
spring season. This person will find and create content that aligns with Komen Iowa brand and strategy,
maintain consistent posting schedules, and track interaction and following on various social media
outlets. Additionally, this person will assist with communication strategies for donors, volunteers,
sponsors, and Race for the Cure participants.
*As this is a position that requires a vast majority of the work to be done online, the work may be done
remotely from a location outside of our Des Moines office. Weekly work schedules will be determined
ahead of time, and occasional office meetings will be set to evaluate progress.*
Primary Responsibilities:
Utilize word of mouth marketing, internet marketing, and internet marketing techniques to
increase activity and engagement with fans and followers in an effort to spread the message of
the organization
Leverage social networks to strengthen involvement from our supporters and the number of
impressions on potential sponsors
Increasing the number of “likes” on Facebook page and followers on Twitter account, while
building number of users on new social media outlets such as Pinterest and LinkedIn
Promoting events, publications, and conversation using online social media platforms
Working with staff to develop new ideas to raise Komen Iowa’s online visibility and reach
Develop and implement promotional strategies; including trivia, contests, and other activities to
engage followers
Deliver interesting and unique information through news articles, facts and figures, and other
educational materials to help promote the mission of the Iowa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for
the Cure

Position Qualifications:
Keen interest in the mission of the Affiliate
Excellent problem-solver with strong written, verbal, and communication skills
Advanced understanding of Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Youtube, and other applicable social
media outlets
Must be able to successfully and simultaneously manage many tasks of a broad variety
in a timely and efficient manner.
Must be self‐disciplined, able to work independently, and proficient in time management
Must have a positive attitude and a history of strong work ethic
