- What it could easily mean.
- When searching for material I used Google and DuckDuckGo. Was it ever possible that someone could come up with a simpler page than Google? Or better search results? Google wins on images and maps – but for straight search I find myself using Duckduckgo more often and it gets me what I’m looking for faster.
- One of the traditional meanings.
- For this talk – it’s mobile computing.
- Why is it “the” cloud? What’s so special about this cloud? Where did this moniker come from anyway?
- A traditional network diagram – at the top is a cloud – a convenient way of reducing a complicated network down to a single, simple image.
- This the cloud – with computers attached – any can connect to any.
- Back in the 90’s we had the internet and the web. The “cloud” didn’t exist a term back then. It’s a more recent term with most significant growth in the last 5 years.
- The cloud is really the internet – but the internet has changed.
- How new (disruptive) technologies are accepted in the market. Innovators will buy just because it’s new – actually, it has to be new. Laggards only buy because they have to e.g. when New Zealand shifts to digital TV they will be the last to switch over (and may miss the cutover date). Where you are will affect your likely take-up of Cloud services or mobile computing.
- These services are in the cloud. Where are they exactly? Doesn’t matter, you just access them.
- Social networking – your “friends”, networks connecting and socialising can take place in the cloud.
- Sophisticated image manipulation for free. Why buy Photoshop for hundreds of dollars? Adobe will need to respond or become the next Kodak.
- Cloud phone services offer rich features and are vey price competitive.
- They used to be phones and that’s all. Now they’re handheld computers with a transmitter and receiver. They are enabled by the Cloud – which provides the data and services and access to easily download apps.
- The GPS facility is the critical element in making mobile useful by feeding your location into service information and applications.
- The big decision – which phone platform to choose. Pretty much down to cool vs open. Windows? Why didn’t they come up with a new name? “Windows” makes me think of bloatware based on DOS (I know that’s not true – but it’s an association). Classic case of falling to one of “The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing” a book by Al Ries and Jack Trout. Law 12: The Law of Line Extension. There is an irresistible pressure to extend the equity of the brand. Or in their later book The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding – Law 10: The Law of Line Extensions. “The easiest way to destroy a brand is to put its name on everything”
