We used a range of researching techniques to
acquire the feedback of our target audience
before producing ‘Behind the glass’. Such
techniques are evident in the form of our
Survey on ‘The Nightmare on Elm street’ and
its analysis, as well as our ongoing peer
assessment. Because our target audience are
teenagers, their input throughout the process
guaranteed that we appealed directly to the
interests of the audience in which we plan to
address.
Sound
Our analysis reinforced the importance of
music within horror films. They preferred a
soundtrack in which wasn’t too
exaggerated and comical but subtle and
adapts to the style of the film. Our peers
thought that the deep rumble throughout
felt uncomfortable and mimicked deep
breathing that the audience endure as the
tension increases. Unlike ‘The Nightmare
on Elm street’ the music in which we used
was not instrumental because we
believed this non-diegetic soundtrack
would remove the emphasis of the
diegetic sounds that occur throughout.
The importance of diegetic sounds were
emphasized by our survey and so we
have included many of the original sounds
( although many were recorded
afterwards) in order to attract and exploit
the views in which our target audience
Narrative
The results in which we collected from our survey analysis and from
The various peer assessments was that our target audience prefer films
in which the narratives / plots evolve and develop throughout. Therefore we
have used this within our final film as the strange occurring's like the door slamming
and the tapping on the windows become more frequent and sincere, for example, the
flashing lights and the smashing of the mug. Our plot is unexplainable and creates
impending curiosity, in which our target audience have told us is one of the best
elements of horror films.
Location
Our peers ( Target audience) have stressed the importance of location so we
have made sure that the location in which we have used is effective. It’s isolate,
empty and large which creates the impression that Lily is solely alone and is in
inevitable danger. The fact that Lily is moving in alone can be related to our target
audience because at this time in their life they may be moving out or going to
university, starting a new, independent lifestyle. Therefore horror revolving around
a young woman moving can be related too as this may happen to them,
provoking more fear and engaging them more.
Character
From the survey results we established that the
Villains identity is most appreciated when
hidden, so we therefore have used a similar
form of character in ‘Behind the Glass’. By
taking the interests of our peers into account,
we decided that the villains identity will be left
unknown to allow the antagonist to possibly
return, creating uneasiness and fear within the
audience. The target audience enjoy mystery
and curiosity, so we have addressed this in our
film to ensure it appeals to them.
Mise-en-scene (Costume)
Our target audience within the survey and amongst our peers
emphasize the importance of the victims costume as shown above.
Therefore within our film we have clothed the victim in a pink and
white, lacy and delicate dress to connote vulnerability and
innocence. Our target audience believed that this ensures the victim
can be recognized and is easily identifiable from the beginning.
