2. Introduction
@ In 2004 Facebook was first introduced to the world as a simple
networking site but now, it has revolutionized into a more complex form
of communication and has advanced its features luring more people to
be a loyal subscriber to the site.
@As of May 2013, it has reached 1.1 billion users and among those
users, teens are found to be the most active.
@ The activities that can be done on Facebook ranges from simple
status update to uploading recent pictures to playing games providing
entertainment, self-identity gratification social compensation, and
communication.
@ Facebook use is motivated by the need to belong and the need for
self presentation .

3. @ However the need for self presentation is being overly satisfied by the
utilization of this site that often leads to a personality disorder construct
called Narcissism.
@ Study suggests that Facebook might be a useful tool fro
detecting whether someone is a narcissist and the things that are
found on someone’s profile can be correlated with Narcissism.

4. Statement of the Problem
The study aims to determine the relationship between Narcissistic
personality disorder and the social media site called Facebook
among the second year students of Associate In Multimedia
Technology under the College of Computer Science of University of
Makati.
It seeks to answer the following:
1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents of:
a. Age
b. Sex
c. Number of hours spent on Facebook per week
2. What is the level of narcissism among second year students of
Associate in Multimedia Technology under the College of
Computer Science at University of Makati
3. Is there any significant relationship between the degree of
Facebbok activity and the level of Narcissism?

5. Hypothesis/Assumption
The study intends to test the following hypothesis:
Alternate Hypothesis:
There is a significant difference between the frequency of
Facebook activity and narcissistic tendencies.
Null Hypothesis:
There is no significant difference between the frequency of
Facebook activity and narcissistic tendencies.

6. Theoretical Framework
Social Exchange Theory
@ is kind of like the mathematical and logical side of a
relationship. We add and subtract points for the following: how
much effort are we putting into the relationship versus how much
effort our companion is contributing, what we feel we deserve in a
relationship and how likely is it that we could find a better
relationship.
@The theory also applies to Facebook, because it breaks down the
main human factors involved in forming relationships with a gain
to both sides. The desire of belonging to a group and the wish to
share experiences and to connect is such a great emotional
benefit that it has made Facebook, successfully beyond what
anyone could have imagined.

7. @ This study, however, was a combination of both psychological and
communication aspects of social media, analyzing a growing trend of
Internet self–publication and discussing the motivations for their
postings, more specifically by taking a particular psychological disorder,
NPD and examining the potential development of its traits in an individual
avenue of social media, Facebook

9. Scope and Limitation
@Some of the limitations that will exist throughout the study is the social
media to use which is Facebook. Since Social media coves too many
aspects and denomination , researchers are limitation, researchers are
limited to choose only one that really affects one personality.
@The individuals who will selected for the study are only those who
are enrolled as second year under the course of Associate in
Multimedia Technology in the University of Makati.

10. Significance Of The Study
This section will offer a clear view about the linkage between Facebook
and narcissism to provide a better understanding of the issue to various
individuals that may be concerned with this kind of matter.
@The study will raise awareness to the students about the issue
especially that they are the group of people who are most active online.
This will also benefit them the most because it will help them to
understand the effect of this action to their development and give them
information about the factors that can be a cause of narcissism.
In this study, the parents can gain new knowledge on how they can be
more responsible in allowing their child regarding the use of the social
media site, Facebook.
@This study will give information to the teachers about Facebook and
the effects of this to the personality of the students. As second parents,
teachers can also give students the guidance they need on the internet.

11. @The result of this study will also help the school administration in
setting up a suitable counseling service at school that facilitates the
expansion of the pupil’s view of life, enlarges his repertoire of coping
resources and enables him to make choices for change in himself, the
situation and the environment, without destructive consequences to self
or others.
@The process and outcome of this study will produce a great
satisfaction, competence and professionalism to the researchers. Also,
this will inform them the importance of regulating their Facebook usage
as they are Facebook subscribers themselves.
@For the future researcher, this study can be used as a reference for
their future researches.

12. Review of Related Literature
@ The first two parts of this review of the
literature will describe three types of
research: research on Facebook Activity,
research on Narcissism and research about
the relationship on both areas. Each section
will summarize the assumptions and major
findings of these types of research. The third
part of this literature review is a summary of
research on effective problem solving.

13. Facebook activity
@Different researches were conducted with
the purpose of finding on how accurate is the
measurement of facebook activity done by
individuals. “Facebook use” has been
measured variously using categorical,
interval, or ratio scales with different degrees
of sensitivity. In the study of Psychology of
Popular Media Culture,the respondents were
asked,

average number of minutes they spend
online in a typical day, month, or year; or,
instead, to identify whether they use the site
(or elements of it) “never,” “seldom,”
“sometimes,” or “frequently,” without clear
guidance provided on the frequency of usage
that might exemplify each of these categories

15. @ In addition, sampling or screening might involve
identifying whether potential participants are “regular
users” of the site, with no clear definition provided about
the level of activity that this would entail. Not only do
these inconsistencies and methodological issues make
both interpretation and meta-analysis challenging, but
they also pose obvious threats to studying reliability and
validity (a problem also confounded by the fact that the
majority of the studies use self-report survey data).

@ The April 2012 issue of the journal Psychological
reports, published an article that uses the new measure
called the BFAS, short for the Bergen Facebook
Addiction Scale

16. Antecedents of Facebook Use
@ The article of Danah Boyd (2007) says that Facebook is
particularly popular with young people especially those in
college or university (perhaps reflective of its roots in the
student community.
@ The study of Macquarie Research, a research team in
America,that people tend toward passive activities on Facebook,
spending more time browsing updates and pictures of others
than on posting their own updates or photos or using
apps.Women are more likely to post content than males (20% to
17%), while men were more interested in reading or responding
to others' updates (33% to 28%). Women are also leading the
charge onto mobile on Facebook. Some 61% of women are
going on to Facebook mostly via mobile compared to 51% of
men, and in a year's time 76% expect to log in mainly on mobile
devices versus 62% of men.

17. Factors affecting individual to
use Facebook
@ A chapter from a research made by Psychology
of Popular Media Culture found out that general
Internet use has been found to meet both users’
interpersonal need as well as their need to build
and maintain relationships in virtual communities
that is, maintaining virtual networks has become
an end in itself. This may be explained, at least in
part, by evidence that suggests users of digital
media “respond to computerized devices in the
way they do to people.”

18. @ Ashwini Nadkarni, M.D. and Stefan G. Hofmann,
Ph.D. proposed a model of FB use in their article.
According to this model, FB use is primarily
motivated by two basic social needs: (1) the need
to belong, and (2) the need for self-presentation.
The need to belong refers to the intrinsic drive to
affiliate with others and gain social acceptance,
and the need for self-presentation to the
continuous process of impression management.
These two motivational factors can co-exist, but
can also each be the single cause for FB use.

19. Narcissism and Facebook
@ Examination of the interpersonal possibilities offered by
Facebook as well as the limited extant research suggests several
tentative hypotheses about Facebook behaviors and the two
aspects of narcissism under investigation.
@ Initially, individuals who are high in GE will want to gain the
attention of the widest audience possible (Ackerman et al., 2011).
@ On the other hand, Ackerman et al. (2011) found that EE tended to
be associated with anti-social behaviors that indicate that others
should cater to the narcissist’s needs without any expectation of
reciprocity.

20. Synthesis of the Review
The literature reviewed suggests that social
networks such as Facebook provide unique
insights into the relationship between the degree of
facebook activity and narcissistic tendencies seen
in a particular individual and at the same time a
facebook user. The literature reviewed in this
chapter presents evidence as to how individuals
can freely expose themselves through their
facebook activity.

21. Research Design
@This research design will make use of a
descriptive research. A descriptive design will
be selected because it provides an accurate
portrayal or account of the characteristics

@ Twenty Five percent of the population of the
second year students of University of Makati
under the course Associate in Multimedia
Technology will be invited to take the test

22. Data Collection and Instrument
@ Contains Narcissistic Personality Inventory, a standardized
test of test that will determine their narcissistic tendency and
Facebook Activity Test that will act as an assessor of how
active they are on Facebook. In addition, the survey also
contains demographic question asking the participants to list
their age and gender.
