Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10
Apparently there is no good reason that this ought not to be an all-the-calendar year minn kota
elements ground, but it seems never to be stopped at much in the winter. It furnishes, however, a
very good summertime handline fishery for cod at dogfish time, and in the spring weeks it abounds
in cod, cusk, and hake, all fish of sizeable size.
Roseway Bank. This bank is placed N. from the western a part of La Have and SE. of Shelbourne
Light, Nova Scotia: 31 miles SSE. from the whistling buoy off of Lockport, Nova Scotia, towards the
southeastern side. It is oblong in shape and also of small extent--about 270 square geographical
miles. Its greatest duration is 21 miles and its greatest breadth 15 kilometers. It extends from 43?
12' to 43? 33' north latitude, and from 64? 25' to 64? 52' to the west longitude and also at the north
west corner is connected with the shore restrict of 60 fathoms by a narrow neck area. Depths are
from 33 to 48 fathoms. The bottom is ofgravel and sand, and rocks; in the Northeast Peak the bottom
is of discolored mud and gravel.
Currents in this area are not almost so strong as about Cape Sable and Browns Banking institution,
their general direction getting WSW. and ENE the westerly a lot the much stronger, though the
power and course of both are much influenced by the wind.
Hake, pollock and halibut occur, the very best minn kota components months being from May to
October, when the bank is resorted to by craft from western Nova Scotia, although the principal fish
used here arecod and haddock, and cusk. A couple of New Great britain craft also fish here.
La Have Bank. Situated eastward of Browns Bank and S. and E. of Roseway Bank. It extends from
42? 34' to 43? 26' to the north latitude a distance of 52 mls, and from 63? 50' to 65? 07' western side
longitude a distance of around 54 mls. The bank is almost divided into two portions, which the
eastern (La Have Bank proper) extends N and S. 39 miles and the western portion almost E. and W.
about 35 kilometers. The total section of the bank is around 1,200 miles.
The bottom is largely coarsepebbles and pea gravel, and rock and roll, with small areas of sand
distributed here and there. Depths run from 40 to 50 fathoms. The normal set of the currents is
always to the westward, but this can be much relying on the power and route of the wind and is
usually quite powerful during easterly blows.
The principal minn kota parts upon this bank in the past has been for haddock and cod: and while
previous reports, (1881) speak of this as having once been a favorite angling ground for halibut and
suggest that it was not at time of great importance and importance in that fishery, the figures just
for this ground for your year 1923 show the halibut find to have been third in volume and first in
value of the species considered there. In fact, the catch of halibut here can make quite an imposing
shape when the somewhat small dimensions of the ground is regarded as.
Little Los angeles Have as well as the La Have Ridges are simply continuations of the back towards
the European Bank to get a distance of around 45 miles. This places the eastern limit within 62? 50'
west longitude, the north and the southern area of boundaries getting about as those of Los angeles
Have Bank. The portion of the ridges is all about 1,575 miles. The base here is a succession of ridges
of pebbles and pea gravel with occasional spots of stones. Depths are from 53 to 80 fathoms. The
current, occasionally strong, is weaker here than further W. in the bank and, except during easterly
wind, is but little discovered. The general established is westerly.
"The Ridges" says the report before mentioned, "were for a number of years one of the favorite
accommodations for halibut catchers in the winter months, and many excellent catches of cod were
taken at that year. At present but few halibut are found except inside the deep drinking water along
the the southern area of edge of the floor, where they sometimes have been discovered quite
plentiful during practically the entire season." Apparently there is not much change in these.
MinnKota can always be a complete service recycling and document destruction middle inside
Fargo, ND. We happen to be offering recycling services sincconditions since the writer's time; sea
food appear to be present within about the same amounts as in past years.
One particular piece of base, having depths of 25 to 50 fathoms around red clay, lying roughly in 43?
08' to 43? 10' north latitude and about 81? to 83? west longitude, seems an effective spring and
early summer time ground. Apparently red-clay underside indicates a good halibut ground, as this
kinds is usually current where such a bottom is located.
Hake are normally found in excellent numbers from the deep h2o about the sides of the soil and even
on the Ridges.
These waters can be heavily fished from Canadian ports, as well as a fair quantity of American
vessels visit them each year, many of them hailing from Boston or Gloucester.
Scandinavian Bank. 18 miles SSW. from Shelbourne Light. Nova Scotia. It is actually about 3 miles
long in an E. and W. direction by about ? mile wide. Generally speaking, the bottom is level, with
depths from 50 to 70 fathoms; the shoal parts are sharp and rocky, the bottom over the deeper
portions being created mostly of small dark and yellow pebbles.
This is a summer halibut ground (August and July) in depths from 45 to 60 fathoms, and halibut
occur in October in the much deeper waters about it. It is also a reasonable summer cod ground, and
cusk can be found in the strong water in regards to the edges during most of the calendar year. In
common, species and seasons are far as on Roseway.
Traditional western Bank. This is one of the most critical minn kota elements grounds from the
western Atlantic, whether as regards dimension or the abundance of its product or service. It is
situated S. of Cape Breton Island and the eastern a part of Nova Scotia between the parallels of 42?
44 and 55'? 46' north latitude and also the meridians of 59? 04' and 62? 35' west longitude. It has a
duration of 156 mls and a breadth, including the Midst Ground, of 76 a long way. It is about 420 mls
E. ? S. from Boston to the southwestern edge, which implies about 48 hours' steaming for the otter-
trawl fleet.
The general contour from the bank inside the 65-fathom line, as laid down on the Admiralty graph,
approaches fairly a very elongated ellipse, the longer axis running NE. by E. and SW. by W.; but over
a broad area to eastward of the center of the bank, soundings of less than 50 fathoms hook it up
directly with all the Middle Soil, which we have here in the some banking institution. The total level
of the lender thus outlined is about 7,000 sq geographical miles. Off its eastern finish lies
Banquereau (the Quereau of the anglers) with The Gully between, as well as a short extended
distance of the european edge are definitely the La Have Ridges.
The depths away from the southern side of the bank boost rapidly from 80 to700 and 1,200, and in
many cases 1,400 fathoms. With the eastern end is Sable Island, [16] "graveyard of ships", along and
narrow, crescent-shaped height seemingly minimizing in region each year, established entirely of
sand which has been blown Into innumerable hummocks and dunes. Away from both finishes of the
isle are lengthy and hazardous yellow sand bars. The duration of the island is 20 a long way; its
finest width is all about 1? a long way. It is said that this Northwest Gentle has been shifted three
times because of the fact that the traditional western end of your island has been literally amazed. It
lies in an E. and W. direction, and the depth water over the cafes for a range of 7 to 10 miles out
does not surpass 2 fathoms, and even 10 miles a greater distance out the depths do not go over 10 to
11 fathoms. Within the past several years fishermen have reported the appearance of a sand shoal
about 5 or 6 mls SE. in the Northeast Light-weight. This is said to appear at low water.
In general, the bank slopes S. and W. from the tropical isle, depths including 18 to 60 fathoms. The
bottom is mostly sandy with patches of gravel and pebbles. Currents are often very strong about
Sable Tropical island and are somewhat irregular; seemingly they are significantly influenced by the
winds. Around the other parts in the bank normally there is but little recent, whatever there is
certainly usually tending toward the west.
Formerly the cod and halibut were the meal fishes most taken right here, but with the changed
strategies in the fishery (as the growth of the otter-trawl fleet) along with a changed flavor in our
public the haddock catch is one of the second most essential in the statements of sea food readily
available waters. The halibut fishery stands next in the checklist. Other bottom part feeders happen
in less figures, the pollock and the cusk perhaps becoming next so as of significance, with hake and
plenty of the various flatfishes in the otter trawls. These latter are marketed as sole.
Remembering the small amount of haddock within the fares taken from these seas in previous years,
the author asked a number of old-time fishermen as to its abundance in the past. The response was
normally yes and Oh, there have been always haddock there; often they worried us a good deal."
Then, noting my surprise at so adding it, "You know, the haddock isn't much being a salt fish."
Not too valuable proportionately, though it will be noted that in 1923 the haddock catch right here
was a very good second on the cod capture in poundage. In the otter-trawl catch from this ground it
will probably be noted how the positions of the two species are reversed. These steamers certainly
acquire more than 2 pounds of haddock to 1 of cod on other overseas grounds--possibly the result of
operating in the shoaler waters as well as on the smoother bottom because of the difficulty of
dragging on the rocky and kelp-covered ground, which the cod seems to like, as a rule. If it is so
desired, however the bottom about the Western Lender is of the nature as to offer little obstruction
for the passage of your net, in order that virtually all aspects of it may be fished by this approach;
and this, added to the identified movements of your cod universities makes it possible at specific
seasons of the year to catch a greater proportion of this species.
Haddock are found concerning the bars at both ends of the tropical island in March and from that
time to about June 1 in from 15 to 22 fathoms. They are also plentiful 18 a long way W. from your
Northwest Light at the same seasons as well as the same depths. DuringApril and May, and June
they come in next to the island in from 10 to 17 fathoms--even to 1 fathom. Through the rest of the
year (with the exception of the cold months, if they have moved away from into further water) they
could be found all over the bank on sandy bottom part in 28 to 30 fathoms, where most of the ray
trawl sportfishing is carried on.
There is a good cod school each and every year on the comparatively level bottom part along the
southwestern and western edges of the ground in 70 fathoms and more from February 1 to May 1,
and in most years a certain amount of this kinds is taken on this area. In May this school offers
moved on to a piece of base about 20 miles extended lying SW. from the North west Light and
getting depths averaging 27 fathoms. With acceptable fishing for cod on the American Bank during
most of the season, they seem to be most abundant from the first of March to June. Apparently this
species trips this soil in substantial numbers during the spawning time of year, though the winter
months school here appears to be smaller compared to that on Georges. In the winter months the
cod are mainly found upon the western portion of the bank, getting into the shoaler waters in the
direction of Sable Tropical island as the spring season advances (in the course of March and April),
the "Flex" of the island and the neighborhood of your bars in 2 to 4 fathoms, where they are often
seen using the hook or can be "jigged." being preferred grounds. The earth lying W. from the North
west on, Light and about the Northwest Bar (18 miles W, from the lighting), is a beloved cod floor in
June and might. The shoal water within the rocky base WNW through the Northwest Light-weight
furnishes excellent cod fishing from June 10 to July 1. This piece commences just away from 3-mile
extend of breakers running out from the land and extends overseas in a normally westerly path to 24
fathoms. Significantly hand-lining is completed here.
Inside the shoal h2o, in April and May, the fish seem to be giving on the "lant," (Ammodytes
americanus). It is said the fish taken at the base close to the island are smaller compared to those
discovered farther to the west. The shoal water in the northern shore of the island is said to get good
cod grounds and favorite locations for "dory fingers-liner." The cod educational institutions seem to
show up on the Northern Peak (SE. from the Northeast Light 40 miles to SE ? S. from very same
point 28 miles) at the end of March along with the first of April, shifting N. and W. to the island. The
cod of Sable Isle are said to be fine, business minn kota props minn kota elements, perhaps due to
the abundance in the "reddish colored clams" (bank clams) on these grounds.
The cod and haddock fishery is carried on by American and Canadian cruising vessels and otter
trawlers, progressively more English and French vessels of the latter class performing the fishery of
this terrain each year.
Halibut are located on the Western Banking institution virtually all the season at depths varying with
the seasons. This, with The Gully and Quereau--in fact, all one piece of ground--rates second simply
to the Grand Bank Alone, as a halibut bank. The ideal fishing here for halibut is found from January
to October. There are numerous places on and about your budget that the halibut seems to like, as
the Maximum of Pike, 85 a long way W. by S. in the Northwest Light-weight of Sable Island; S. and
SW. of Sable Island from 12 to 38 mls; SW. 20 miles in 60 fathoms in May possibly; thence out into
150 and 100 fathoms in June; in fact, pursuing the 100--fathom curve over the edge of this bank,
beyond the Northeast Peak (40 miles SE. in the Northeast Light-weight), into the Gully and around
the The southern part of Prong of Quereau towards the Middle Prong. Apparently they leave this
piece of base in July. Often the sea food are close to the island in the spring, where the water is very
shoal that they may be seen utilizing the bait or playing with the hook prior to taking. InApr and
May, and June a good halibut ground is in 18 fathoms 24 mls WNW. from Sable Isle.
The European Bank appears to be a good feeding ground for both cod and halibut mainly because it
abounds in shellfish and crustaceans, as well as certain time periods there are many smaller species
of fish after it, including the lant and herring, on what these kinds and the haddock, also,
particularly prey. A great deal of swordfish is taken in Sept . and August, mainly by American
vessels.
Banquereau. Separated from the Traditional western Bank with the Gully, this has a very unusual
form--the key bank approximately rectangular, by using a narrow westerly extension of
comparatively standard form. Its length, E. and W., is about 120 miles, its greatest thickness about
47 miles, as well as its total region about 2,800 miles.
The primary portion of the lender lies in between 44? 04' and 45? 01' north latitude and 67? 59 and
10'? 00' western side longitude, and the western prolongation lies involving 44? 44 and 24'? 42'
north latitude and 69? 00' and 80? 05' western longitude. Northern of Banquereau lies Artimon,
distant 3 miles, and Misaine, distant from 2 to 15 miles based on the places that measurements are
taken. If any current, the currents listed below are of different force, significantly influenced by the
wind, so that several days of strong tides may be then intervals if you have little.
On the eastern a part of Quereau is definitely an area of shoal ground called the Rocky Bottom,
having a range of about 18 fathoms; somewhere else depths work from 18 to 50 fathoms. There are
actually scattered patches of sand and gravel, even though typically the bottom is rocky.
Cod and halibut are the primary food fishes hake, undertaken and haddock and cusk being
consumed small phone numbers. The Difficult Bottom, a shoal ground of 20 to 25 fathom depths on
the eastern part, was much resorted to by dory handliners in summer time. Occasional very good
fares are taken toward the western, even though the cod are most plentiful about the eastern
portion of the bank. The best cod minn kota parts on this bank comes from May until September, as
soon as the schools get to feed after the lant, squid, crustaceans, and shellfish, then very abundant.
Halibut are found in this article all the 12 months off the corners in 100 to 400 fathoms. Obviously
these are breeding and feeding grounds for this species, and it is not unusual for the school to
remain for weeks and even weeks in one locality, though a few of these may be seafood in migration
northward.
The primary halibut reasons are along the southern and eastern borders of the bank--the Southwest
Prong and the South west Cove (in approximately 44? N. lat. and between 58? 58 and 30'? 55' W.
long), the center Prong (44? 14' N. lat. and 58? W. long.), and also the Eastern Slope (44? 28' to 45?
00' N. lat.)--in depths of 150 to 400 fathoms. These strong-water areas are rocky and support a very
rich growth and development ofgorgonians and corals, sea anemones, etc. The Eastern Slope has
loads http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/fishing.htm of bank clams in depths of 25 fathoms. These beds
are good hand-line grounds for cod. The halibut, too, rss feeds to a significant extent after these red
clams.
The Stone Fence off the eastern slope of Quereau is an extremely rocky component of ground
packed with "trees" (corals) in 250 fathoms. This is a good halibut ground although it is nearly
impossible to haul the gear by hand and the application of the "gurdy" (a curler turned with a crank
and fastened to the dory's bow for winding within the trawl) becomes necessary. Infrequent fares of
halibut are taken about and on the Rocky Bottom in 20 to 25 fathoms from July 1 to August 1.
The Gully. This is actually the deep waterway between Banquereau and Sable Island or Western
Bank. It extends in an WNW. Engine Maintenance
• Don’t allow oil as well as debris build-up
in the actual bilges.
• Inspect your lagging associated with engine
and heater exhausts regarding
damage and deterioration and also
nearby items regarding heat damage
or charring.
• Examine exhaust systems of
inboard engines regarding leaks.

suddenly S. at its eastern end and continuing lower between the eastern end of Western Bank and
the Southwest Prong of Banquereau. The full length is approximately 80 mls, the greatest width
about 20 miles. Depths range from 68 to 145 fathoms more than a bottom of rocks, gravel and sand
and soil. The rocky and gravelly portions kind several ridges separated by areas of finer materials,
besides in the eastern section, where the intervals between are mostly covered by pebbles and sharp
rocks. Ocean currents are generally westerly, of diverse strength, significantly affected by the
easterly winds.
The Gully is a very significant halibut soil. The halibut are not seen in great amounts all over the soil,
perhaps the best of the minn kota parts getting on the difficult and gravelly ridges and slopes
included in between the meridians of 69? and 80? western longitude. This rocky base is loaded with
food, and the lant and herring tend to be plentiful here in their season. In the spring the halibut are
especially numerous in the northwestern and northern parts of the bank, later, in June and July,
moving even farther out. Some, are found here in winter. It does not seem to be of regular
likelihood; and apparently there are almost no haddock here, probably as a result of depth from the
water as well as the nature in the bottom, as the cod is oftentimes found in The Gully in 60 to 90
fathoms.
Artimon Bank. Comes with an area of some 120 sq . miles by using a bottom of gravel and
rocksdepths and stones of 38 to 50 fathoms. It is but hidden because of the habit of the fishermen to
use the bigger grounds shut at hand. Cod are known to be present right here, however. Your budget
lies N. of the eastern part of Quereau, separated from it by a filter, deep-water channel.
Misaine Bank. Lies N. of the american two-thirds of Quereau, at one place very close to, but in
common the banks are separated by some 20 miles of deep h2o. Its finest length is 80 mls and its
greatest width 40 miles. Depths are from 40 to 60 fathoms more than a bottom broken and rocky. It
is not of much importance like a minn kota elements ground, despite the fact that a few halibut trips
are landed from it in most several years.
Canso Lender. A long, thin extension of Misaine Banking institution, lying in an E, and W. path; its
size is 45 miles as well as its greatest thickness 13 miles, its area being about 425 sq miles. Depths
range from 30 to 65 fathoms over a bottom of sand, with spots of gravel and pebbles. More fished by
vessels from Nova Scotia; maybe it is overshadowed by the presence of its larger sized Quereau,
neighbors and European Banks, which grounds it forms essentially one part of bottom, only narrow,
deep-drinking water channels splitting them, although it is not of great importance and importance
being a minn kota components ground, specially as evaluated by the use of it by the United states
fleet. These larger reasons are heavily fished equally by American vessels and through those from
Nova Scotia ports along with by French and English language otter trawlers.
The stats given elsewhere and here in this report are taken from the published bulletins of the
United States Bureau of Fisheries, and include merely the landings of vessels of 5 tons net, or older,
at the ports of Boston and Glouscester, Mass., and Portland, Me.

[Footnote 16: "Pedro Reinel, a Portuguese pilot of much fame" (Herrera) produced a map in 1505
demonstrating Sable Tropical isle, feared and dreaded by all fishermen even in those days, where he
called it "Santa Cruz." Jacamo Gastaldi, an Italian cartographer, in 1548 shows it "Isolla de Market."
Sir Humphrey Gilbert or his historian, states that the Portuguese had made an interesting
settlement here for shipwrecked mariners. This, "On intelligence we had of your Portugal who has
been himself current when the Portugals, above 35 years earlier (thus well before 1551) did put
after the island tidy and swine to breed, which were given that exceedingly increased."]

Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10

  • 1. Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10 Apparently there is no good reason that this ought not to be an all-the-calendar year minn kota elements ground, but it seems never to be stopped at much in the winter. It furnishes, however, a very good summertime handline fishery for cod at dogfish time, and in the spring weeks it abounds in cod, cusk, and hake, all fish of sizeable size. Roseway Bank. This bank is placed N. from the western a part of La Have and SE. of Shelbourne Light, Nova Scotia: 31 miles SSE. from the whistling buoy off of Lockport, Nova Scotia, towards the southeastern side. It is oblong in shape and also of small extent--about 270 square geographical miles. Its greatest duration is 21 miles and its greatest breadth 15 kilometers. It extends from 43? 12' to 43? 33' north latitude, and from 64? 25' to 64? 52' to the west longitude and also at the north west corner is connected with the shore restrict of 60 fathoms by a narrow neck area. Depths are from 33 to 48 fathoms. The bottom is ofgravel and sand, and rocks; in the Northeast Peak the bottom is of discolored mud and gravel. Currents in this area are not almost so strong as about Cape Sable and Browns Banking institution, their general direction getting WSW. and ENE the westerly a lot the much stronger, though the power and course of both are much influenced by the wind. Hake, pollock and halibut occur, the very best minn kota components months being from May to October, when the bank is resorted to by craft from western Nova Scotia, although the principal fish used here arecod and haddock, and cusk. A couple of New Great britain craft also fish here. La Have Bank. Situated eastward of Browns Bank and S. and E. of Roseway Bank. It extends from 42? 34' to 43? 26' to the north latitude a distance of 52 mls, and from 63? 50' to 65? 07' western side longitude a distance of around 54 mls. The bank is almost divided into two portions, which the eastern (La Have Bank proper) extends N and S. 39 miles and the western portion almost E. and W. about 35 kilometers. The total section of the bank is around 1,200 miles. The bottom is largely coarsepebbles and pea gravel, and rock and roll, with small areas of sand distributed here and there. Depths run from 40 to 50 fathoms. The normal set of the currents is always to the westward, but this can be much relying on the power and route of the wind and is usually quite powerful during easterly blows. The principal minn kota parts upon this bank in the past has been for haddock and cod: and while previous reports, (1881) speak of this as having once been a favorite angling ground for halibut and suggest that it was not at time of great importance and importance in that fishery, the figures just for this ground for your year 1923 show the halibut find to have been third in volume and first in value of the species considered there. In fact, the catch of halibut here can make quite an imposing shape when the somewhat small dimensions of the ground is regarded as. Little Los angeles Have as well as the La Have Ridges are simply continuations of the back towards the European Bank to get a distance of around 45 miles. This places the eastern limit within 62? 50' west longitude, the north and the southern area of boundaries getting about as those of Los angeles Have Bank. The portion of the ridges is all about 1,575 miles. The base here is a succession of ridges of pebbles and pea gravel with occasional spots of stones. Depths are from 53 to 80 fathoms. The
  • 2. current, occasionally strong, is weaker here than further W. in the bank and, except during easterly wind, is but little discovered. The general established is westerly. "The Ridges" says the report before mentioned, "were for a number of years one of the favorite accommodations for halibut catchers in the winter months, and many excellent catches of cod were taken at that year. At present but few halibut are found except inside the deep drinking water along the the southern area of edge of the floor, where they sometimes have been discovered quite plentiful during practically the entire season." Apparently there is not much change in these. MinnKota can always be a complete service recycling and document destruction middle inside Fargo, ND. We happen to be offering recycling services sincconditions since the writer's time; sea food appear to be present within about the same amounts as in past years. One particular piece of base, having depths of 25 to 50 fathoms around red clay, lying roughly in 43? 08' to 43? 10' north latitude and about 81? to 83? west longitude, seems an effective spring and early summer time ground. Apparently red-clay underside indicates a good halibut ground, as this kinds is usually current where such a bottom is located. Hake are normally found in excellent numbers from the deep h2o about the sides of the soil and even on the Ridges. These waters can be heavily fished from Canadian ports, as well as a fair quantity of American vessels visit them each year, many of them hailing from Boston or Gloucester. Scandinavian Bank. 18 miles SSW. from Shelbourne Light. Nova Scotia. It is actually about 3 miles long in an E. and W. direction by about ? mile wide. Generally speaking, the bottom is level, with depths from 50 to 70 fathoms; the shoal parts are sharp and rocky, the bottom over the deeper portions being created mostly of small dark and yellow pebbles. This is a summer halibut ground (August and July) in depths from 45 to 60 fathoms, and halibut occur in October in the much deeper waters about it. It is also a reasonable summer cod ground, and cusk can be found in the strong water in regards to the edges during most of the calendar year. In common, species and seasons are far as on Roseway. Traditional western Bank. This is one of the most critical minn kota elements grounds from the western Atlantic, whether as regards dimension or the abundance of its product or service. It is situated S. of Cape Breton Island and the eastern a part of Nova Scotia between the parallels of 42? 44 and 55'? 46' north latitude and also the meridians of 59? 04' and 62? 35' west longitude. It has a duration of 156 mls and a breadth, including the Midst Ground, of 76 a long way. It is about 420 mls E. ? S. from Boston to the southwestern edge, which implies about 48 hours' steaming for the otter- trawl fleet. The general contour from the bank inside the 65-fathom line, as laid down on the Admiralty graph, approaches fairly a very elongated ellipse, the longer axis running NE. by E. and SW. by W.; but over a broad area to eastward of the center of the bank, soundings of less than 50 fathoms hook it up directly with all the Middle Soil, which we have here in the some banking institution. The total level of the lender thus outlined is about 7,000 sq geographical miles. Off its eastern finish lies Banquereau (the Quereau of the anglers) with The Gully between, as well as a short extended distance of the european edge are definitely the La Have Ridges. The depths away from the southern side of the bank boost rapidly from 80 to700 and 1,200, and in many cases 1,400 fathoms. With the eastern end is Sable Island, [16] "graveyard of ships", along and
  • 3. narrow, crescent-shaped height seemingly minimizing in region each year, established entirely of sand which has been blown Into innumerable hummocks and dunes. Away from both finishes of the isle are lengthy and hazardous yellow sand bars. The duration of the island is 20 a long way; its finest width is all about 1? a long way. It is said that this Northwest Gentle has been shifted three times because of the fact that the traditional western end of your island has been literally amazed. It lies in an E. and W. direction, and the depth water over the cafes for a range of 7 to 10 miles out does not surpass 2 fathoms, and even 10 miles a greater distance out the depths do not go over 10 to 11 fathoms. Within the past several years fishermen have reported the appearance of a sand shoal about 5 or 6 mls SE. in the Northeast Light-weight. This is said to appear at low water. In general, the bank slopes S. and W. from the tropical isle, depths including 18 to 60 fathoms. The bottom is mostly sandy with patches of gravel and pebbles. Currents are often very strong about Sable Tropical island and are somewhat irregular; seemingly they are significantly influenced by the winds. Around the other parts in the bank normally there is but little recent, whatever there is certainly usually tending toward the west. Formerly the cod and halibut were the meal fishes most taken right here, but with the changed strategies in the fishery (as the growth of the otter-trawl fleet) along with a changed flavor in our public the haddock catch is one of the second most essential in the statements of sea food readily available waters. The halibut fishery stands next in the checklist. Other bottom part feeders happen in less figures, the pollock and the cusk perhaps becoming next so as of significance, with hake and plenty of the various flatfishes in the otter trawls. These latter are marketed as sole. Remembering the small amount of haddock within the fares taken from these seas in previous years, the author asked a number of old-time fishermen as to its abundance in the past. The response was normally yes and Oh, there have been always haddock there; often they worried us a good deal." Then, noting my surprise at so adding it, "You know, the haddock isn't much being a salt fish." Not too valuable proportionately, though it will be noted that in 1923 the haddock catch right here was a very good second on the cod capture in poundage. In the otter-trawl catch from this ground it will probably be noted how the positions of the two species are reversed. These steamers certainly acquire more than 2 pounds of haddock to 1 of cod on other overseas grounds--possibly the result of operating in the shoaler waters as well as on the smoother bottom because of the difficulty of dragging on the rocky and kelp-covered ground, which the cod seems to like, as a rule. If it is so desired, however the bottom about the Western Lender is of the nature as to offer little obstruction for the passage of your net, in order that virtually all aspects of it may be fished by this approach; and this, added to the identified movements of your cod universities makes it possible at specific seasons of the year to catch a greater proportion of this species. Haddock are found concerning the bars at both ends of the tropical island in March and from that time to about June 1 in from 15 to 22 fathoms. They are also plentiful 18 a long way W. from your Northwest Light at the same seasons as well as the same depths. DuringApril and May, and June they come in next to the island in from 10 to 17 fathoms--even to 1 fathom. Through the rest of the year (with the exception of the cold months, if they have moved away from into further water) they could be found all over the bank on sandy bottom part in 28 to 30 fathoms, where most of the ray trawl sportfishing is carried on. There is a good cod school each and every year on the comparatively level bottom part along the southwestern and western edges of the ground in 70 fathoms and more from February 1 to May 1,
  • 4. and in most years a certain amount of this kinds is taken on this area. In May this school offers moved on to a piece of base about 20 miles extended lying SW. from the North west Light and getting depths averaging 27 fathoms. With acceptable fishing for cod on the American Bank during most of the season, they seem to be most abundant from the first of March to June. Apparently this species trips this soil in substantial numbers during the spawning time of year, though the winter months school here appears to be smaller compared to that on Georges. In the winter months the cod are mainly found upon the western portion of the bank, getting into the shoaler waters in the direction of Sable Tropical island as the spring season advances (in the course of March and April), the "Flex" of the island and the neighborhood of your bars in 2 to 4 fathoms, where they are often seen using the hook or can be "jigged." being preferred grounds. The earth lying W. from the North west on, Light and about the Northwest Bar (18 miles W, from the lighting), is a beloved cod floor in June and might. The shoal water within the rocky base WNW through the Northwest Light-weight furnishes excellent cod fishing from June 10 to July 1. This piece commences just away from 3-mile extend of breakers running out from the land and extends overseas in a normally westerly path to 24 fathoms. Significantly hand-lining is completed here. Inside the shoal h2o, in April and May, the fish seem to be giving on the "lant," (Ammodytes americanus). It is said the fish taken at the base close to the island are smaller compared to those discovered farther to the west. The shoal water in the northern shore of the island is said to get good cod grounds and favorite locations for "dory fingers-liner." The cod educational institutions seem to show up on the Northern Peak (SE. from the Northeast Light 40 miles to SE ? S. from very same point 28 miles) at the end of March along with the first of April, shifting N. and W. to the island. The cod of Sable Isle are said to be fine, business minn kota props minn kota elements, perhaps due to the abundance in the "reddish colored clams" (bank clams) on these grounds. The cod and haddock fishery is carried on by American and Canadian cruising vessels and otter trawlers, progressively more English and French vessels of the latter class performing the fishery of this terrain each year. Halibut are located on the Western Banking institution virtually all the season at depths varying with the seasons. This, with The Gully and Quereau--in fact, all one piece of ground--rates second simply to the Grand Bank Alone, as a halibut bank. The ideal fishing here for halibut is found from January to October. There are numerous places on and about your budget that the halibut seems to like, as the Maximum of Pike, 85 a long way W. by S. in the Northwest Light-weight of Sable Island; S. and SW. of Sable Island from 12 to 38 mls; SW. 20 miles in 60 fathoms in May possibly; thence out into 150 and 100 fathoms in June; in fact, pursuing the 100--fathom curve over the edge of this bank, beyond the Northeast Peak (40 miles SE. in the Northeast Light-weight), into the Gully and around the The southern part of Prong of Quereau towards the Middle Prong. Apparently they leave this piece of base in July. Often the sea food are close to the island in the spring, where the water is very shoal that they may be seen utilizing the bait or playing with the hook prior to taking. InApr and May, and June a good halibut ground is in 18 fathoms 24 mls WNW. from Sable Isle. The European Bank appears to be a good feeding ground for both cod and halibut mainly because it abounds in shellfish and crustaceans, as well as certain time periods there are many smaller species of fish after it, including the lant and herring, on what these kinds and the haddock, also, particularly prey. A great deal of swordfish is taken in Sept . and August, mainly by American vessels. Banquereau. Separated from the Traditional western Bank with the Gully, this has a very unusual form--the key bank approximately rectangular, by using a narrow westerly extension of comparatively standard form. Its length, E. and W., is about 120 miles, its greatest thickness about
  • 5. 47 miles, as well as its total region about 2,800 miles. The primary portion of the lender lies in between 44? 04' and 45? 01' north latitude and 67? 59 and 10'? 00' western side longitude, and the western prolongation lies involving 44? 44 and 24'? 42' north latitude and 69? 00' and 80? 05' western longitude. Northern of Banquereau lies Artimon, distant 3 miles, and Misaine, distant from 2 to 15 miles based on the places that measurements are taken. If any current, the currents listed below are of different force, significantly influenced by the wind, so that several days of strong tides may be then intervals if you have little. On the eastern a part of Quereau is definitely an area of shoal ground called the Rocky Bottom, having a range of about 18 fathoms; somewhere else depths work from 18 to 50 fathoms. There are actually scattered patches of sand and gravel, even though typically the bottom is rocky. Cod and halibut are the primary food fishes hake, undertaken and haddock and cusk being consumed small phone numbers. The Difficult Bottom, a shoal ground of 20 to 25 fathom depths on the eastern part, was much resorted to by dory handliners in summer time. Occasional very good fares are taken toward the western, even though the cod are most plentiful about the eastern portion of the bank. The best cod minn kota parts on this bank comes from May until September, as soon as the schools get to feed after the lant, squid, crustaceans, and shellfish, then very abundant. Halibut are found in this article all the 12 months off the corners in 100 to 400 fathoms. Obviously these are breeding and feeding grounds for this species, and it is not unusual for the school to remain for weeks and even weeks in one locality, though a few of these may be seafood in migration northward. The primary halibut reasons are along the southern and eastern borders of the bank--the Southwest Prong and the South west Cove (in approximately 44? N. lat. and between 58? 58 and 30'? 55' W. long), the center Prong (44? 14' N. lat. and 58? W. long.), and also the Eastern Slope (44? 28' to 45? 00' N. lat.)--in depths of 150 to 400 fathoms. These strong-water areas are rocky and support a very rich growth and development ofgorgonians and corals, sea anemones, etc. The Eastern Slope has loads http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/fishing.htm of bank clams in depths of 25 fathoms. These beds are good hand-line grounds for cod. The halibut, too, rss feeds to a significant extent after these red clams. The Stone Fence off the eastern slope of Quereau is an extremely rocky component of ground packed with "trees" (corals) in 250 fathoms. This is a good halibut ground although it is nearly impossible to haul the gear by hand and the application of the "gurdy" (a curler turned with a crank and fastened to the dory's bow for winding within the trawl) becomes necessary. Infrequent fares of halibut are taken about and on the Rocky Bottom in 20 to 25 fathoms from July 1 to August 1. The Gully. This is actually the deep waterway between Banquereau and Sable Island or Western Bank. It extends in an WNW. Engine Maintenance • Don’t allow oil as well as debris build-up in the actual bilges. • Inspect your lagging associated with engine and heater exhausts regarding

The full length is approximately 80 mls, the greatest width about 20 miles. Depths range from 68 to 145 fathoms more than a bottom of rocks, gravel and sand and soil. The rocky and gravelly portions kind several ridges separated by areas of finer materials, besides in the eastern section, where the intervals between are mostly covered by pebbles and sharp rocks. Ocean currents are generally westerly, of diverse strength, significantly affected by the easterly winds. The Gully is a very significant halibut soil. The halibut are not seen in great amounts all over the soil, perhaps the best of the minn kota parts getting on the difficult and gravelly ridges and slopes included in between the meridians of 69? and 80? western longitude. This rocky base is loaded with food, and the lant and herring tend to be plentiful here in their season. In the spring the halibut are especially numerous in the northwestern and northern parts of the bank, later, in June and July, moving even farther out. Some, are found here in winter. It does not seem to be of regular likelihood; and apparently there are almost no haddock here, probably as a result of depth from the water as well as the nature in the bottom, as the cod is oftentimes found in The Gully in 60 to 90 fathoms. Artimon Bank. Comes with an area of some 120 sq . miles by using a bottom of gravel and rocksdepths and stones of 38 to 50 fathoms. It is but hidden because of the habit of the fishermen to use the bigger grounds shut at hand. Cod are known to be present right here, however. Your budget lies N. of the eastern part of Quereau, separated from it by a filter, deep-water channel. Misaine Bank. Lies N. of the american two-thirds of Quereau, at one place very close to, but in common the banks are separated by some 20 miles of deep h2o. Its finest length is 80 mls and its greatest width 40 miles. Depths are from 40 to 60 fathoms more than a bottom broken and rocky. It is not of much importance like a minn kota elements ground, despite the fact that a few halibut trips are landed from it in most several years. Canso Lender. A long, thin extension of Misaine Banking institution, lying in an E, and W. path; its size is 45 miles as well as its greatest thickness 13 miles, its area being about 425 sq miles. Depths range from 30 to 65 fathoms over a bottom of sand, with spots of gravel and pebbles. More fished by vessels from Nova Scotia; maybe it is overshadowed by the presence of its larger sized Quereau, neighbors and European Banks, which grounds it forms essentially one part of bottom, only narrow,
  • 7. deep-drinking water channels splitting them, although it is not of great importance and importance being a minn kota components ground, specially as evaluated by the use of it by the United states fleet. These larger reasons are heavily fished equally by American vessels and through those from Nova Scotia ports along with by French and English language otter trawlers. The stats given elsewhere and here in this report are taken from the published bulletins of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, and include merely the landings of vessels of 5 tons net, or older, at the ports of Boston and Glouscester, Mass., and Portland, Me. [Table 5--Fishing grounds in the offshore North Atlantic, exhibiting the principal species taken on them] [Footnote 16: "Pedro Reinel, a Portuguese pilot of much fame" (Herrera) produced a map in 1505 demonstrating Sable Tropical isle, feared and dreaded by all fishermen even in those days, where he called it "Santa Cruz." Jacamo Gastaldi, an Italian cartographer, in 1548 shows it "Isolla de Market." Sir Humphrey Gilbert or his historian, states that the Portuguese had made an interesting settlement here for shipwrecked mariners.
