A POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE
OUTLOOK
POSITIVE THINKING





Positive thinking is a mental attitude that admits
into the mind thoughts, words and images that
are conducive to growth, expansion and success.
It is a mental attitude that expects good and
favorable results.
A positive mind anticipates happiness, joy, health
and a successful outcome of every situation and
action.
Positive thinking helps with stress management
and can even improve ones health.
SELF IMAGE
 Self-image

is how you view yourself, your
characteristics and abilities.
 It is the value you place on yourself and
how worthy you feel.
 Self-image is influenced by your selfesteem and your body image.

Women In The Media
•Women are used much more than men
•Media teaches women to measure themselves in terms of physical
appearance
•Standards of beauty are unattainable for most women
•Media uses young females who are on strict diets or starving to portray
the images of beauty
•Young women see models in the media and feel the need to look like
them to be attractive
TWO TYPES OF FUNCTIONS:
MANIFEST FUNCTION
•Can be applied to the desired intent of
the advertiser
•They use the human image and its
sexuality to create interest in a product
by appealing to the desires of the
person
•Pictures of beautiful models are shown
in hopes that the viewer will see it and
think that they need the product to
obtain that level of human perfection
•Has proven itself over time to be
effective

LATENT FUNCTION
Unrecognized by the media
Consumers can view any
fashion magazine and see
multiple adds with
subliminal, if not direct,
messages
“In 1992, the ten most
popular magazines most
commonly read by men and
women were reviewed for
ads and articles related to
weight loss. The women’s
magazines contained 10.5
times more articles related
to dieting and weight loss
than did the man’s
magazines.”

SELF CONFIDENCE:
Belief about our ability to
do something
Causes of poor Self-Image
 Negative

Environment
 Unfair or Unnecessary
Comparison
 Lack of self awareness
 Negative Self talk
 Unrealistic Expectations
STEPS TO BUID A POSITIVE SELF
IMAGE:
 Take

Inventory: Make a list of all your strengths and
Weaknesses.
 Set Goals.
 Associate with people of High Moral Character.
 Accept Responsibility.
 Give yourself Positive Autosuggestions.
DEFINITION: SELF CONFIDENCE

Self confidence relates to self-assuredness in one’s personal
judgment, ability ,power etc.
Freedom from doubt; belief in yourself and your abilities.
Famous Quote on Self Confidence by Raj Persaud
“Promiseyourself, no matter how difficult the problem life
throws at you, that you will try as hard as you can to help
yourself. You acknowledge that sometimes your efforts to help
yourself may not result in success, as often being properly
rewarded is not in your control”.
How to build Self Confidence: 12
Steps
1. RECOGNIZE YOUR
INSECURITIES


Whatever is making
you feel unworthy,
ashamed, or inferior,
identify it, give it a
name, and write it
down. You can also
tear these written
pieces to start feeling
positive on those
points.

2. TALK TO FRIENDS
AND LOVED ONES


Get to the root of the
problem, speak to
someone to let it out and
make it easier. Learn to
accept yourself.
4. IDENTIFY YOUR
SUCCESSES

3.BOUNCE BACK FROM
YOUR MISTAKES


Remember that no one
is perfect. Even the most
confident people have
insecurities. At some
point in any of our lives,
we may feel we lack
something. That is
reality.



Everyone is good at
something, so discover
the things at which you
excel, then focus on your
talents. Give yourself
permission to take pride
in them. Give yourself
credit for your successes.




A lot of the times, at
the root of insecurity
and lack of confidence
is a feeling of not
having enough of
something, whether it's
emotional validation,
good luck, money, etc.
By acknowledging and
appreciating what you
do have, you can
combat the feeling of
being incomplete and
unsatisfied. Finding
that inner peace will do
wonders for your
confidence.

5. BE THANKFUL FOR
WHAT YOU HAVE
6. BE POSITIVE




Avoid self-pity, or the pity
and sympathy of others.
Never allow others to
make you feel inferior-they can only do so if you
let them. If you continue
to loathe and belittle
yourself, others are going
to do and believe likewise.
Instead, speak positively
about yourself, about your
future, and about your
progress.

7. ACCEPT COMPLAINTS
GRACEFULLY


Don't roll your eyes and
say, "Yeah, right," or
shrug it off. Take it to
heart and respond
positively("Thank you"
and a smile works well).
8. LOOK AT THE MIRROR
AND SMILE




Studies surrounding
what's called the "facial
feedback theory" suggest
that the expressions on
your face can actually
encourage your brain to
register certain emotions.
So by looking in the
mirror and smiling every
day, you might feel
happier with yourself and
more confident in the long
run.

9. FAKE IT


Along the same lines of
smiling to make yourself
feel happy, acting
confident might actually
make you believe it.
Pretend you're a
completely confident
version of you; go
through the motions and
see how you feel!
10. STICK TO YOUR
PRINCIPLES




It might be tough, but if
you don't have something
you can believe in, you
don't have anything. If you
don't stand for something,
you will fall for anything.
No matter what's
happened in your life, you
can always lay claim to
the fact that from this day
forward, you've followed
your principles to the best
of your ability.

11. HELP OTHERS


When you know you're
kind to the people around
you, and are making a
positive difference in
other people's lives (even
if it's just being kinder to
the person who serves
you coffee in the
morning), you'll know that
you are a positive force in
the world--which will
boost your self
confidence.
12. AVOID PERFECTIONISM


Perfectionism paralyzes you and keeps you from
accomplishing your goals.
BASIC NEEDS THAT FORM
OUR IDENTITY
1. Need to Feel Loved & Accepted:
• A sense of Belonging
2. Need to Feel Valued & Acceptable:
• A sense of Worthiness
3. Need to Feel Adequate:
• A sense of Competence

  • 18.   A lot of the times, at the root of insecurity and lack of confidence is a feeling of not having enough of something, whether it's emotional validation, good luck, money, etc. By acknowledging and appreciating what you do have, you can combat the feeling of being incomplete and unsatisfied. Finding that inner peace will do wonders for your confidence. 5. BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT YOU HAVE
  • 19. 6. BE POSITIVE   Avoid self-pity, or the pity and sympathy of others. Never allow others to make you feel inferior-they can only do so if you let them. ACCEPT COMPLAINTS GRACEFULLY  Don't roll your eyes and say, "Yeah, right," or shrug it off. Take it to heart and respond positively("Thank you" and a smile works well).

HELP OTHERS  When you know you're kind to the people around you, and are making a positive difference in other people's lives (even if it's just being kinder to the person who serves you coffee in the morning), you'll know that you are a positive force in the world--which will boost your self confidence.
