Editor's Notes
The Muslim world consists of the Middle East in Asia and the north African countries. The dominant ethnic/language group is Arabic.
Turkey is located on two continents (Asia and Europe). Turkey’s geographical location results in a mixture of both European and Middle Eastern traditions and culture. Istanbul is the largest city, laying along the Bosphorus strait that connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara.
Many of Turkey’s large cities in the West are reminiscent of major European cities. Turkey is a developed country with many modern technologies.

The Blue Mosque of Turkey. Mosques throughout the Middle East require visitors and worshipers to remove their shoes before entering. Also, women and men are separated and pray and different areas. Mosques have a central dome often with at least 4 minerets, or towers.
The country with the world’s largest population of Muslims is not in the Middle East; rather it is the country of Indonesia. A split occurred within the Islam religion, resulting in two groups—the Shiites and the Sunnis. The Shiites are mainly concentrated in Iran, Iraq, and Pakistan. The Shiites are supporters of Ali (the son-in-law of Muhammad), who they believed was the rightful successor of Muhammad.

Great city of Babylon was at its height circa 2300BC.Nebuchanezer’s Hanging Gardens was considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. During the Neo-Assyrian Empire (c.883-612), large monumental bulls, often with wings and always with human heads, were placed as gateway guardians at the entrances of royal palaces like Khorsabad and Nineveh. The general idea behind them was that they warded off evil. The ziggurat at Ur dates back over 4,000 years ago.
The height of Persian rule lasted from about 550 B.C. until 330 B.C., when Alexander the Great overthrew the ruling Archaemenid dynasty and burned Persepolis to the ground
