Twitter is one of the most popular social networks of our time.
Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass.
Jack Dorsey attended the Missouri University of Science and Technology before he transferred to New York University where he came up with the idea of Twitter.
Dorsey approached Odeo with his idea for Twitter.
Dorsey built a prototype for Twitter in about two weeks.
Evan Williams left Google to co-found Odeo, a podcasting company.
Williams co-founded Obvious Corp. with Biz Stone.
Twitter was one of Obvious Corp.'s projects but Twitter itselft was spun out into a new company in April 2007, with Williams as co-founder, board member, and investor.
Biz Stone helped to create and launch Odeo.
Biz Stone co-founded Obvious Corp.
Noah Glass created Odeo along with Evan Williams.
The original project code name was twttr that Noah Glass came up with since there was already a twitter.com. The idea was inspired by Flickr.
Most people do not know the story of the things they use everyday.
The creators of Twitter all worked at a podcasting company called Odeo. This is where Jack Dorsey presented the idea of Twitter. The others liked the idea and some started to work on a prototype while the others maintained Odeo. They chose to name it "twttr" inspired by Flickr since twitter.com was already taken.
However, Odeo was in trouble so Obvious Corp was founded with Twttr as its sole project. After a while, the group bought Twitter.com and re-branded. Everything started to fall into place. Slowly, with every major feature added, more users joined and pretty soon Twitter became popular.
The founders and their story are important because if it wasn’t for them, Twitter wouldn’t exist. A lot of people depend on Twitter for many things. Some might get advice from friends by posting a question, stay up to date with the major things that are trending, gain inspiration, or just simply see what your friends are doing. Twitter is way to connect people and their ideas to others.
There are probably many reasons that could be attributed to Twitter’s success but here just 3 simple ones.
Twitter allows 140 characters which lets people express their creativity in a brief way.
Twitter allows people to share thoughts and ideas with other people. People can get inspiration from it or just simply see what their friends are doing.
Twitter has the most current news possible. Usually there is nothing that is "old news" because Twitter is instant. Followers see updates from a person immediately.
Twitter was now like a micro-blog system. People could say and express things in just 140 characters and share with others. The # trend was started on Twitter. It basically labels a popular phrase, topic or theme.
Twitter was not something that happened instantly. It was slow and painstaking process. The founders had to have patience in order for Twitter to be a success. However their hard work paid off.
Twitter is currently the number 2 social network in the world.
As of the second quarter of 2015, Twitter averaged at 304 million monthly active users.
