Network Functions Virtualisation – Introductory White Paper Issue 1
Network Functions Virtualisation
An Introduction, Benefits, Enablers, Challenges & Call for Action
OBJECTIVES
This is a non-proprietary white paper authored by network operators.
The key objective for this white paper is to outline the benefits, enablers and challenges for Network
Functions Virtualisation (as distinct from Cloud/SDN) and the rationale for encouraging an
international collaboration to accelerate development and deployment of interoperable solutions
based on high volume industry standard servers.

week—approximately 1% of the population—the average annualized restart rate drops to 2.53. In
another internal study conducted recently (data courtesy of Andrew Morgan, Google Inc, 2013)
planned server unavailability events were factored out from the total machine unavailability. The
remaining unavailability can be attributed to server crashes or lack of networking reachability and
it indicates that a server can stay up for an average of nearly two years (0.5 unplanned restart rate).
This is consistent with our intuition that most restarts are due to planned events such as software
and hardware upgrades.
Figure 7.3: Distribution of machine downtime, observed at Google over 6 months. The average annu-
alized restart rate across all machines is 4.2, corresponding to a mean time between restarts of just less
