2. It is an intelligent transportation system, in which vehicles
and highways will exchange information through a two-way
communication system. The automated highways will have
a set of lanes on which vehicles with specialized sensors and
wireless communications systems could travel under
computer control at closely spaced intervals. This type of
arrangement is called platoons. The vehicles could
continuously exchange information with other vehicles and
traffic-control centers about speed, acceleration, braking,
obstacles, road conditions, etc. Sensor data can be
processed and sent back to each vehicle guaranteeing a
continuous exchange of information.
3. IVHS that are applicable to
development of automated construction systems. In particular, the following
IVHS
research areas applicable to construction automation and robotics are discussed:
(1)Traffic congestion characterization,
(2) Automated vehicle location,
(3) Electronic ticketing and automated trip payment,
(4)Vehicle guidance systems, and
(5) Safety and human factors.
4. 33% of the nation's major roads are in "poor or
mediocre condition."
36% of major urban highways are congested.
26% of bridges are "structurally deficient or
functionally obsolete."
According toTRIP, a national transportation
research group:
5. ‡ The traffic will grow by 1.2% per annum
each year
‡ It is not possible to address the problem by
building new roads.
‡ Need to reduce serious road accidents by
50%
6.
7. Grouping vehicles into platoons is a method of
increasing the capacity of roads. An automated
highway system is a proposed technology for
doing this.

9. Greater fuel
economy due to reduced
air resistance.
Reduced congestion
On longer highway trips,
vehicles could be mostly
unattended whilst in
following mode.
Drivers would feel less
in control of their own
driving, being at the
hands of computer
software, or the lead
driver

11. Thanks to the ubiquity of both Global
Positioning System (GPS) and wireless
communications networks, smart roads may
soon merge with smart cars to form one big,
brainy network. In this intelligent universe,
cars will talk to roads will talk to cars.
