• At modus we’ve been working on a lot of enterprise web and mobile apps that sit on top of tons and tons of content. We’re seeing a lot of trends that mobilize and connect content across publishing portfolios and through channel and content partnerships. As publisher look to create value from all of this content, using data visualizations, especially interactive ones. offer new ways to increase user engagement. That said, these user experiences still have a strong dependency on connecting all the data that exists below the waterline.
• These quadrants show the evolution of visualizations fromstatic graphics and tabular data into highly interactive experiences. From pie charts to info graphics, mash-upsGoogle maps is a good example. Think about the evolution in map visualizations from early web, to web 2.0, to mobile.
• Here’s a cluster map my LinkedIn network by organized by Company (color) and Connection (dot/line).Data analysis is much easier with visualizations making it easier to identify ‘super-connecting’ people.
• NewsMaps.jp – is a great site helping people deal with information overload.Treemap that visualizes a large amount of Google News aggregated data.Multiple dimensions of data are being shown here: Color coded meta-data, sized by number of related stories.
• My 6 year old daughter has rarely used a mouse.Millennial’s have Highly Visual, tactile, interactive experience as established norms.
• The world beyond mobile is the world of Connected Devices.Editors and creative directors are having to design once and adapt to many platforms.Cross channel user experiences reflect the ‘any screen ‘ strategy for content and require knowledge of fluid design implementations.
• PBS for the iPad (Video player app) is a great example of driving a great experience by focusing on content findability under the water line. This app was ranked #1 free download in iTunes and ‘App of the Week’ by ApplePBS moved 1,300 into the cloud covering a range of basic HTML to fully Flash based sites.A keen focus on developing publishing services enabled a meta data layer to solve the content findability problem.Searching‘healthcare’ on web across PBS sites can be very tedious while search for healthcare related content on Tablet is an enjoyable visual search.Additionally, this app adds personalization and socialization features allowing users to rate, share videos, save to favorites and manage video queues.
• BET’siPhone app has a great infinitetwitter wall visualization that teens can use to comment while watching the show 106 & Park.Take a typically linear display and innovate an interesting new visualization.Sports Illustrated Everywhere - open content to all channels and devices. Device appropriate design – use visualizations to make the best use of limited screen real-estate – scoreboards, fantasy league rosters, etc.
• Top Secret America is the result of 2 years of investigative reporting on post 9/11 intelligence spendingThis curved chart displays the categories of intelligence work (color coded) done by the different intelligence agencies (center of the hub)Built custom database to aggregate data, custom visualizations to power the siteLaunched this micro-site as a capstone to the series of articles.
• HTML5 to the rescue! Slowly but surely.Interactive HTML5 charting and graphing package developed by Sencha – it provides for interactive clickable charts on web and mobile devices. We’re currently building a ‘green energy dashboard’ for iPad with Sencha Charts.
• Recovery.gov is aOpen Government initiative to visualize for citizens where Recovery Act dollars are being spent.Government website usually list tons of PDF’s with tabular data which make it hard to visualize trends and patterns in massive data sets. Here, people can use visual search to quickly see where the money is being spent in their back yard.
• Here we have a sentiment analysis of user comments to an NY TIMES article about the recent killing of Bin Laden.Visualizes hundreds if not thousands of comments and displays them in quadrants relating to SIGNIFIGANCE and whether they view the killing as POSITIVE or NEGATIVEAble to draw conclusions not possible from traditional comments list – areas of strong feeling – interactive – click a point to view the comment.
• Strong opportunity for publishers to increase engagement and create new revenue opportunities with ‘Content Apps’Subscription based app – many facets to filter the fortune 500 list CNN Money data feeds Google Maps integration LinkedIn integration Creating value across their brands AND through content/network partnershipsImagine connecting this data to Salesforce to enable sales teams!
