INTRODUCTION
All of us read many books in our daily life. Short stories, novels
biographies, journals, articles etc. It’s also include magazines,
newspapers etc. But most of the people may not hear about
“manuscript magazines”. It may be a new word for us.
Manuscript magazine is nothing but the magazine is nothing but
magazine made by hand. It is very interesting to study about the man
made magazine.
There are lots of manuscripts available in our country. The
manuscripts are used by man in the past centuries.
Here we discuss about the manuscripts and manuscript
magazine.
MANUSCRIPT MAGAZINE
Before telling about manuscript magazine we should know
about the term ‘manuscript’.
A manuscript is any document written by hand as opposed to
being printed or reproduced in some other way. Before the arrival of
printing, all documents and books were manuscripts. In publishing
and academic context, a manuscript is the text submitted to the
publisher or printer in preparation for publication, regardless of the
format. Until recently typescript prepared on a typewriter was usual,
but today a digit file with a printout, prepared in manuscript format is
the most common. Manuscripts are normally required by publishing
companies before being published.
Manuscripts are not defined by their contents which may
combine writing with mathematical calculations, maps, explanatory
figure or illustrations. Manuscripts may be in the book form, scrolls or
in codex format. Illuminated manuscripts are enriched with pictures,
border decorations, elaborately embossed initial letters or full page
illustrations.
CULTURAL BACKGROUND
Before the invention of woodblock printing in china or by
movable type in a printing press in Europe, all written documents had
to be both produced and reproduced by hand. Historically manuscripts
were produced and reproduced by hand. Historically manuscripts
were produced on vellum and other parchment. In India the palm leaf
manuscript, with a distinctive long rectangular shape was used from
ancient times until the 19th
century .Paper spread from China via the
Islamic world to Europe by with century and by the late 15th
century
had largely replaced parchment for many purposes.
Ironically the manuscripts that were being most carefully
preserved in the libraries of antiquity are virtually all lost. Papyrus has
a life of at most of a century or two in relatively moist Italian or
Greek conditions only those works copied on to parchment, usually
after the general conservation to Christianity, have survived, and by
no means all of those.
Modern Variations
In the contest of library science, a manuscript is defined as any
hand-written item in the collections of a library or an achive.
In book, magazine and music publishing a manuscript is an
original copy of a work written by an author or composer, which
generally follows standardised typographic and formatting rules.
In film and theatre a manuscript or script for short, is an authors
or dramatists text, used by a theatre company or film crew during the
production of the works performance or filming. More specifically a
motion picture or manuscript is called a screen play.
Common Genres of Manuscripts
Bibles
The bible was the most studied book of the middle ages. The
Bible was the centre of medieval religious life. Along with the Bible
came scores of common commentaries were written in volumes with
some focussing on just single pages of scripture.
Parts of Manuscripts
 Cover
 Fly leaf
 Colophon
 Incipit
 Illustration
 Shelf mark or signature in holding library. (as opposed to
printed catalogue number)
 Works or Compositions included in same manuscripts
 Codicological elements
 Deletions methods
 Headers or footers
 Page format
 Inter polation
 Owners signatures
 Dedications or inscriptions
 Censor signatures
 Collation
 Quires
 Binding
 Paper or vellum or papyrus
 Ink
 Writing implement use
 Paste down
 Page numeration
 Palaeographic elements
 Script
 Dating
 Line fillers
 Ruled lines
 Historical elements of manuscripts
 Evidence of fire
 Mold
 Wormed
CONCLUSIONS
Here we can conclude that the manuscript is any document written by
hand, as opposed to being printed or reproduced some other way.
Manuscripts are not defined by their contents, which may combine
writing with mathematical calculations, maps, explanatory figures or
illustrations. Manuscripts may be in book forms, scrolls or in codex
format. Laminated manuscripts are enriched with pictures, border
duration, elaborately embossed initial letters or full page illustration.
