six key factors for
success

Connectivity and Interoperability
• Systems of intelligent devices must be
connected to maximize IOT potential, but 85%
of devices are based on unconnected legacy
systems.
• 5G will make the internet of things more
effective, more efficient from a spectral
efficiency standpoint. Roughly 50B devices
will be Internet-connected by 2020.

Privacy and Security
• Ensuring trust through privacy and
security solutions is essential to IoT
adoption.
• Privacy and security must be designed
into IoT systems at the outset using
“Privacy-by-Design.”

Intelligent Analytics and Big Data
• Analytics and the insights that it provides
will be the driving force to deliver IoT
benefits, as well as new public and
private sector businesses and services.
• Analytics will enable turning big data into
actionable intelligence.

Open Standards
• Voluntary global standards developed with open
participation can best meet IoT requirements.
• In February 2015 major industry leaders
announced they will unify as the Open
Connectivity Foundation (OCF), an entity whose
goal will be to help unify IoT standards so that
companies and developers can create IoT
solutions and devices that work seamlessly
together.

Data and Device Discoverability
• The ability to “find” devices and data will
accelerate IoT deployments and societal
benefits.
• Government and industry should
collaborate on a common set of best
discoverability methods.

Public-Private Partnerships
• Government-industry collaboration is critical to maximize
positive IoT economic and societal impact.
• PPPs should make IoT an appealing
investment for government and industry,
and ensure scalability, sustainability,
and innovation.
