“Education is the
passport to the future,
for tomorrow belongs
to those who prepare
      for it today.”
     -- Malcolm X
Integrating technology, do you know…

             • What to do?
             • What you need?
             • What you have?
             • How to implement tools?
             • How to train users?
             • How to support and maintain
                 your technology solution?

Where do we start, you ask?
With a plan!

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
Why a Technology Use Plan?

               • A technology use plan
                 serves as a roadmap to
                 the future.

               • It provides direction
                 and focus.

               • “If you don’t know
                 where you are going,
                 you will end up
                 somewhere else.”
What is a Technology Use Plan?

                • It is a guideline for the use
                  and integration of
                  technology

                • Provides guidelines for
                  implementing and
                  maintaining technology

                • Specifies training
                  development needs to
                  stay current with
                  changing environments
Planning Team

           Building a winning team
           includes…

           • Instructional Staff

           • Technical Support Staff

           • Administrators

           • Community Members
The Process…
          • Define the tasks and the needed steps
            to take.

          • Assess needs and define technology
            requirements.

          • Describe your current computing and
            networking technology resources.

          • Evaluate options and select your preferred
            technology solution.

          • Implement the selected technology
            solution.

          • Train the users.

          • Make plans to support and maintain
technology solution on an ongoing basis.

What is a Vision
     Statement?

A vision statement defines
  the desired or intended
      future state of an
 organization or enterprise
in terms of its fundamental
objective and/or strategic
          direction.
“Do not confine your children to your own learning,
for they were born in another time.”
                 --Chinese Proverb
Vision Statement
                                        Students and Staff will:

                                        • Have access to technology-rich learning
                                            environments within their classrooms, in
learning labs outside the classroom, and
in the school library media center.

                                        • Have access when needed to
                                            networked systems extending from the
classroom, to the school site, to the
district, to the county, to the state, to the
nation, and to the world. Educational
                                            resources through networks could
                                            include libraries, museums, and post-
                                            secondary institutions.

                                        • Be ethical users of technology.

                                        • Receive technology training and
Beverly Hills Unified School District ongoing support.
                   Vision Statement
Vision Statement (continued)

                                        Technology will:

                                        • Provide a system that helps students,
parents and teachers work together to
                                            improve educational outcomes.

                                        • Create a collaborative environment for
                                            project-oriented activities.

                                        • Enable students to become active and
experiential learners through the use of
                                            multimedia tools

                                        • Help to facilitate acceptance of cultural
                                            and physical differences within the
                                            schools and community.

                                        • Enable curriculum, instruction and
Beverly Hills Unified School District assessment to be developed and
Vision Statement aligned with each other and with state
                                            standards.
“Every child in America deserves a
21st century education and access to
      21st century technology.”
       -- Vice President Al Gore
Plan Goals & Objectives
           • To create a technology plan that supports
             student learning at its core

           • Assess and evaluate current technology
             use by:
                  - Students
                  - Faculty and Staff
                  - In the classroom and labs
                  - Community

             curriculum

           • Develop ongoing training for all staff both on
             and off campus

           • Integrate networking and technical support

           • Model and apply ISTE National Educational
Technology Standards for students and teachers
Needs Assessment Survey
          Design a survey that includes:

          • Basic information on faculty or staff

          • Personal Technology Background: Perceived skill
level and technology being used in and out of
                 the classroom

          • Faculty Centered Technology: Focus is on
                 computer-based applications for teaching

          • Student Centered Technology: How does the
student use technology in the class and in their
                 everyday life?

          • Faculty Development: Addressing the awareness
of training available and desire to learn more
                 technologies.

          • Tell us more…
Questions related to specific technology uses,
obstacles, changes in pedagogy, and desired
                 faculty development. Survey taker’s voice
                 encouraged by providing handwritten responses
                 instead of multiple choice questions.
